2016 ANNUAL REPORTLetter from the CEO
Dear friends,
Kids who play do better. You have probably heard that theme from Good Sports many times this year. Statistics show that kids who play do better in school. They develop social and life skills, and they make better choices.
One child who is doing better because of sports is Aaron. Aaron is a very active child, but struggled with following structured rules and interacting with peers. He was removed from his five day a week program at the local Boys and Girls club and was only able to participate twice per week because of his behavior challenges. Then the club received a donation from Good Sports. Aaron worked hard to improve his behavior, and finally could return to attending five days a week and playing with the other children. When asked what helped him adjust his behavior, Aaron said “I miss the club, and I loved using the new equipment when I came here. I wanted to show I could be mature and trusted enough to use it.” When provided the right resources and outlets, children will do better.
Since 2003, Good Sports has helped over four million children across the country, providing more than $22 million worth of brand new sports and fitness equipment to kids in need across the country. But there is still so much work to be done. In 2016, less than one in three kids were physically active every day, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. With your help, we can be the solution. We’ll continue supporting millions of children every year, until all kids have the opportunities afforded by sports and physical activity.
On behalf of myself, our Board of Directors, our advisors and staff — thank you. Your investments, now and in the future, are what make our work possible. Our capacity for growth and potential to remove barriers to sport participation across the country are possible because of you. Thank you for helping us give all kids a chance to play.
Thank you,

Only 20% of rated charities receive a 4-Star rating for consecutive years. Good Sports is also a Better Business Bureau Wise Giving Alliance accredited charity.
ABOUT GOOD SPORTS
TESTIMONIALSIn past fall seasons many children are no longer able to participate in outdoor practices due to the cold. Students like Shamar and Marquis lack proper jackets and are forced to stop attending practices. With gym space at a premium, the Good Sports jacket donations have allowed Shamar and Marquis and other Johnson students to continue to play and have fun outside as the fall season nears its conclusion here in Chicago. It’s great to be able to keep the whole team together from start to end of the fall season!
– America SCORES Chicago
The jerseys and equipment we received enabled us to include more kids in the program, as we could save money on the most expensive part of the program supplies budget—uniforms. The jersey donation was especially important in making our students look and feel like they are part of a real city soccer league. New uniforms can have a powerful effect on morale.
One of our third grade students from our newest partner school was so excited to wear his new uniform (his FIRST ever uniform and FIRST ever sports team) on the first game day that he could not stop asking when it would finally be game time. He must have asked at least 20 times throughout the day!

TESTIMONIALSBoys & Girls Clubs of Thurston County works hard to ensure young people become healthy, active and learn new ways to handle stress, maintain a healthy body and form positive relationships. Athletics are an important element the Clubs use for teaching youth healthy life skills. Many of the youth we serve are at-risk members of our community often coming from income restricted households. For them, the Club may be the only opportunity they have to engage in active structured sports. Following the Good Sports donation, BGCTC started several new sports clubs. For example, with the addition of volleyballs to their athletic portfolio, Rochester Boys & Girls Club youth began their very own Volleyball Club. At the Lacey Boys & Girls Club, the Daily Challenge was implemented alternating the equipment used every day so youth stay engaged and interested. Prior to the donation, most of the basketballs used in the Clubs could not hold air and stayed flat unable to bounce. Now the Clubs’ basketball programs have increased in size with many more youth wanting to participate. The donations enhanced our Clubs’ physical activity offerings. Youth are more engaged, have more playing time than before, enjoy using equipment that isn’t torn or ripped, and many have learned a brand new sport.

HIGHLIGHT REEL
Making a Difference with Jesse PalmerWe were immensely excited to announce the beginning of our partnership with Jesse Palmer in 2016. Jesse is a life-long athlete who was already interested in growing awareness for youth sport initiatives, plus he has a national audience thanks to his network television experience. Jesse helped us make a donation to New York City public schools right away, and his engagement caught the eye of outlets like People and Inc. magazines. We’re looking forward to continuing this partnership in the years to come!
Supporting New YorkIn June of 2016, we officially expanded into our third market: New York City. Under the experienced leadership of NYC Market Director Kelly Patterson, we have launched a New York Advisory Board and a New York Young Professional Board. The market has seen great success, and we look forward to the infusion of fresh ideas and opportunities presented by the city’s community organizations and schools.
Creating Change in ChicagoIn September 2016, we had an outstanding day in Chicago with the Chicago Cubs starting pitcher John Lackey. We donated baseball equipment and apparel to help a local organization, Athletic Konnection, launch their new baseball program. Plus, all the kids in attendance received some Cubs swag! John spoke to the group about hard work, perseverance, and the importance of a good education.
ATHLETES IN THE FIELD
Chris Archer, Tampa Bay RaysGood Sports, the Tampa Bay Rays Foundation and pitcher Chris Archer continue to move forward in their efforts to engage Tampa Bay area kids in physical activity with a number of donations during the year. Chris and the Rays Foundation enabled Good Sports to serve over 1,900 youth from Port Charlotte, St. Petersburg, and Tampa Bay in 2016 alone. Together we donated over $31,400 of brand new equipment, footwear, and apparel. Since 2014, Good Sports, Chris, and the Rays have provided over $179,600 of new gear to almost 11,000 kids throughout the Tampa Bay area. The Rays’ ace also attended every donation event, giving the children in each organization the opportunity to meet and engage with a major league baseball player—a once in a lifetime opportunity.
Zach Ertz, Philadelphia EaglesTouchDDowns for Kids is a collaboration between Good Sports, Zach Ertz of the Philadelphia Eagles, and Dunkin’ Donuts. For each touchdown scored by the Eagles in the 2016 season, Dunkin’ Donuts donated $250 to Good Sports, with Zach Ertz contributing an additional $250 for every touchdown he scores. These funds are used to make a donation of brand new football equipment to a youth football program in Greater Philadelphia, which took place at a ceremony attended by Zach and Dunkin’ Representatives. The Sharon Hill Ramblers were the 2016 recipients, receiving more than $14,500 of new football gear. Since 2013, the TouchDDowns for Kids program and Zach have resulted in over $91,200 donated to Good Sports to help give all kids the chance to play.
Tuukka Rask, Boston BruinsTuukka Rask joined us for the 13th annual Boston Legends Gala. In addition to celebrating Good Sport’s mission of keeping all kids in the game, he made a fabulously unique contribution to our live auction: an at-home street hockey game—with Tuukka as goalie! The item raised $26,000 for Good Sports in one evening. We’re proud to work with athletes who believe in and support our mission on a such a personal level.
