1) Revivalism and evangelism are, in and of them-selves, more significant than the revivalist or theevangelist.

� The issue that is most important is the fact thatthere is an immense need for these events(crusades, revivals, awakenings) to take place.

� We, as evangelists, are not in competition withany other preachers. It is incredibly destructiveto have a comparative spirit.

� I really don�t care who claims to be called to bean evangelist�Young, old, retired, in and outpastors, etc. Any one of us creates a demandfor our services.

� If we will seek first the Kingdom of God and Hisrighteousness, all the rest of what we worryabout will be added unto us.

2) The Postmodern era is not our enemy�it is ourreality to work with and to redeem.

3) We are not to create the need and then fill it; weare to discover the need and meet it.

4) Consideration does not equal compromise.

5) There is a Biblical office called evangelist.(Eph.4:11) It has been an evolving office since itsconception in the mind of God, as are all thingsthat God creates, in the sense that they grow and,thereby, change. We, as evangelists, must under-stand our culture, and adapt our style andapproach. We must do as Jesus did when He atewith sinners and got �out of the box� of the templeand into their homes, fields and businesses.

During some of the highesttension of the cold war, I

sat beside a young Africancommunist on a flight fromParis, France to Nairobi, Kenya.He was returning from acommunist indoctrinationconference in Bulgaria. I prayedfor wisdom to reach him forChrist. With a modestknowledge of Marx and Lenin, Iattempted dialogue. Eventually,I made my move and witnessedfor Christ. I was met by abristling objection to Christianityand an especially strongresentment of Christianmissionaries. He seemedobsessed with a confidentvision of communismconquering the world. His utterdevotion to this cause waschilling. This was the mostdirect and personal meeting Ihave ever had with evil.Afterward, as I reflected on myconversation with this Marxist-Leninist firebrand, a troublingquestion tormented me. How

does my zeal for Christ and thatof other Christians comparewith this zealot�s commitment tocommunism?

That young communist�sdream has largely faded fromthe world, but the depth of ourdevotion to Christ may soon betested and laid bare. For as Iwrite, another brand of brazenevil has appeared on the worldscene. Emerging from theMiddle East, it is intent upon thedestruction of everything andeveryone representing theChristian faith. A rising tide ofanti-Christian expression isenveloping the world. Aroundthe globe, persecution ofChristians has reachedpandemic proportions.Reportedly, in 1998 alone,160,000 Christians were killedfor their faith. This exceeds over400 each day.

Long ago, alluding to Hissuffering and death, Jesusquestioned His disciples, �Canyou drink the cup I drink or bebaptized with the baptism I ambaptized with?� (Mark 10:38).Today, we should respond tothis probing question andanswer it honestly. If we facethe ultimate test of faith, whatwill we do? As we join the othermartyrs, we can say, �We doreceive our Lord�s cup andbaptism of suffering, and we willnot disappoint or deny ourChrist.� If this is not our answer,then we should consider theeternal consequences, whichwill be, �Depart from me�!�

Lessons on being �Christian� were lessons I learned well.Schemas for �right things� were stored in my memory along

with answers to 202 questions in the youth catechism. I under-stood the customs and habits of people of faith.

In our home, my parents used scripture as their child trainingguide. Dad led family worship, we prayed together, and we mem-orized scripture. There was little patience with the child whowhined that memorizing was too hard. Mom directed our sociallives. Our schedules included church activities and Christianfriends, and excluded almost everything else.

I married a minister and my training served me well. I enjoyedhelping in churches he served, but I sought fulfillment in a career.Influenced by secular education, I came to view God�s commandsas relative, not absolute, and general, rather than specific.

Eventually, my career path led to MidAmerica NazareneUniversity. I enjoyed teaching college students and resolved tosupport the university in fostering students� spiritual growth. Butthis resolution was difficult to keep at revival time, and I foundexcuses for not attending. Scheduling five practicum evaluationson five mornings was my excuse for missing chapels during theFall 1996 revival. And, for five evenings, I was too exhausted toleave home.

Then, Sunday arrived and the habit of church-going triumphed.Late for morning service, I found a seat at the top of the balconyand observed. But my attempt to be detached failed. During thesermon, Evangelist Chuck Millhuff recounted the story from IIKings of the woman who came to Elisha in distress. When Elishasent his servant to ask if she was all right, she answered,�Everything is all right.�

The Holy Spirit spoke to my heart through that story. I had livedfor self while saying, �Everything is all right� in my relationshipwith Christ. That morning I sought God�s forgiveness and my lifewas changed. Many Christians are uncomfortable when I tellthem I was lost and my life was transformed. They insist that Ihad a renewal. But I know it was through repentance and restitu-tion that I found forgiveness and hope for my life.

For five years I have experienced a peace and joy that is beyondanything I had imagined possible. Now, when a student says,�Wow! Like, isn�t God awesome?� I understand.

We live in a world of almost endlesschoices. The grocer offers us soft

drinks any way we prefer them: regulars,diet, regular caffeine-free, diet caffeine-free,

and cherry or lemon flavor added. Thoselast two flavors also come in regular anddiet. All of these drinks come in a can,plastic, or glass bottle. At the checkoutcounter, you can have your drinksacked in paper or plastic. Those aretoo many choices to quench my thirst!

Multiply that by the number of productsand services offering variety, and you

begin to total the almost endlessoptions afforded us. Society gladlymakes us this offer with one require-ment: do not pass judgment on theseoptions making one better than anoth-er. Grant tolerance to all options; see allas equally valid. After all, who can say my softdrink preference is better than yours?

Not only are optional products and servicesplaced before us, but religious beliefs also fig-ure into the daily mix. We were reminded in theprayers and memorial services following theSeptember 11 disasters that all sincererequests from every religion aimedtoward gods with a variety of namesshould be considered equally valid. Allare labeled worthwhile paths to the samedivine being.

In actor Anthony Quinn�s will, he distributed hisestate and left this request for his 5 and 8 year-old children. �I want my minor children exposedto a variety of religions without preference forany one.� A clear articulation of the post-modernmindset!

So, where does the holiness message sit onthe postmodern buffet line of religiouschoices? Is it just one more path to vital piety?Are all views regarding timing, nature, andresults of entire sanctification equally valid? I,personally, believe all ideas currently beingtaught about holiness are not equally valid.

uncertain message to our listen-ers when we make a variety ofclaims and present them as equallyvalid. We further confuse the gospelmessage when we present contra-dictory notions.

I strongly appeal for us to resist thepostmodern call to compromise ourholiness message. We must clearly

articulate our

biblically-based, psychologicallysound approach to holiness asdelivered to us through the AmericanHoliness Movement. That�s who weare; that�s what we believe. God�s

Yep! They just moved into the nice ranch style home with the pool right next door! Welearned soon enough that they were two homosexual men. Now, how about that for a

real addition to the neighborhood! I had suspected that I was homophobic; this proved itbeyond doubt. I saw them unloading their stuff�big moving van with lots of fancy furni-ture�you know the kind of things those people have. I could just imagine them out by thepool in the moonlight. Well, it made me kind of sick.

I told Jeanne about them and do you know what she said? �How should we greet themto the neighborhood?� It was then that I realized that these were my neighbors, like it or not.So, I said, �Well, Jeanne, I guess you should do the usual� make the homemade breadand give them some of your frozen jam.� And that�s just what she did. We carried it over tothem all hot and big like she makes it. We introduced ourselves. One of them said. �I wentto a Nazarene College, and I�ve heard you preach.� And then with a look of slight terror, hesaid, �I knew you lived here.� Jeanne commented on the lovely front hall. At that, they invit-ed us to see the whole house, including their bedroom. It was somewhere between thatroom and their front porch that God told me to act like an evangelist instead of a bigot. So Itold them I had a garage full of tools, and offered to help them in any way I could.

That was about five years ago. I have come to know them as wonderful and kind neigh-bors. When they built a tall privacy fence, they put a heavy wrought iron gate on our side sowe could use the pool. I have yet to hit them with �the four spiritual laws,� but I have invitedthem to come and hear me preach when I have been preaching in Kansas City. They act asif they might come, but have yet to show up. In spite of their life style that I abhor, I havecome to like them as nice guys. How will I reach them for Christ ? Only God knows, but Iplan to. Who knows! When life hits one of them really hard, they may come to the preacherthat brought them the homemade bread and the frozen jam�the one who waves at themevery time I see them in their yard�the one who, when I drive by their house, always thinksof them as becoming Christians some day.

They moved in right next door! I needed them toteach me a lesson. I pray some day they will need meto teach them, and that my life will have taught themsomething by some means.

Vaclav Havel, the dissidentplaywright who movedfrom a prison cell to

leading a liberated CzechRepublic, says he�s given himselfto �living in truth.� Such courageprovides the stuff for martyrsand saints, as well as heroes likeHavel. And the Church needscourageous speakers who callmen to �live in truth.�

In university classroomsprofessors may attempt toponder the imponderable, toconsider all sides to vexingquestions. In the pastor�s study,the priestly role of unconditionalacceptance and love,comforting the comfortless,proves invaluable. But it�s theprophetic evangelist who says�thus saith the LORD!� It�s theprophet who proclaimsabsolutes, declares distinctives.He shares Ayn Rand�sconviction, in Atlas Shrugged,that, �There are two sides toevery issue. One side is right,and the other side is wrong, butthe middle is always evil.�

Prophetic evangelistsremind us that sin is sin. Sin is

wrong. Sin damns. Thus, theevangelist, especially, has fewhearers in a postmodern world,since the leading mark of�postmodernism� is cultural andethical relativism.

Postmodernism pulsateswith popular aphorisms bathedin the cologne of relativism.�Everything�s relative,� folks say,as if they were accuratelyreciting Einstein�s famoustheorem! Pundits and publicschool texts tell us �we all havedifferent value systems, andnone of which is right or wrong.�We�re often urged to �share� ouropinions�as if hearing oneanother would magically resolvewhatever separates us. Likeamateur carpenters setting towork building a house withoutblueprints, everyone (in thepostmodern mode) constructshis own version of reality.

In The Death of Truth,Dennis McCallum sayspostmodernism is mainly �amood�a view of the worldcharacterized by a deep distrustof reason, not to mention adisdain for the knowledge

Christians believe the Bibleprovides.� It has its own unique�methodology,� and hasmarshaled a militant �movement�that has marched throughoutthe corridors of our culture. Stillmore: �Postmodernism, as itapplies to our everyday lives, isthe death of truth as we knowit,� for it insists we create, ratherthan discover, truth�thatreality is a social constructrather than a metaphysicalgiven. Dismissing theobjectivity of truth,postmodernists argue that wesubjectively construct our ownrealities, that we �make up�what we�d like to have andthen project them, like imageson a screen, onto the �externalworld.�

One need not examine thecontemporary Church very longbefore detecting the influence ofpostmodernism in her teachingand preaching. We�re oftenquite content helping people feelcomfortable, inflating their self-esteem and excusing their

The original disciples were a handful of unlikely misfits�nothingmore than a �rather ragged aggregation of souls,� as RobertColeman puts it in his book, Master Plan of Evangelism. But theremarkable fact is that they were the same ones who later �turnedthe world upside down,� according to the testimony of people in theFirst Century. There is only one intelligent answer: It was the arrivaland the empowerment of the Holy Spirit. Do you have a passionatecommitment to the task? Do you have a passion for the Holy Spirit?He wants to change you so that you can be a world changer.

Lucy, in the cartoon strip �Peanuts,� says it again and again:�Good ol� wishy-washy Charlie Brown.� Charlie Brown never deniesthe charge, unfortunately.

The need of the church is for men and women who willforthrightly and unashamedly declare their faith. Let�s get off thefence! �Wishy-washies� aren�t world changers. Sugar-watersalesmen or world changers�which? �As for me and my house��

6) A major emphasis must be placed on theencouragement of students who are consideringthe field of evangelism and sense God�s call intheir lives. They must be known and encouragedby diligent follow up and support.

7) We must understand the mentality of the pas-tors and district superintendents we work with.They want results, and will define that word athousand different ways. We are not to becometheir actors on their stages, but we must ask theHoly Spirit to make us aware of where we areand whom we are with.

8) We must not ruminate on the two or threehundred churches that will not have revivals, buton the some forty five hundred that will, if givena workable plan, allow crusades and revivals totake place in their situation.

9) We must become better in every aspect ofour work. Self-evaluation and cross-evaluationamong us must become the norm, and not athreat to our style or message. �Iron sharpensiron.� We must start a Continuing EducationProgram for the Evangelist NOW !

10) Bivocational evangelism is not a disgrace,just as neither is bivocational pastoring.

11) We have rehearsed and proclaimed ourproblems well. We must stop, and begin the longprocess of expecting the best, in spite of theoverwhelming obstacles�culturally, theologicallyand historically.

12) If God called us (and He did), then He willhelp us to overcome every obstacle�somehow,somewhere.

�addictions.� But, real Christians stand rooted in theobjective reality of God and all that is eternal. Onlywhat�s eternal weighs much in the ultimate scale ofthings, and eternal realities exist quite independently ofus time-bound creatures. So, if we�re wise, we will lookoutside, rather than inside, ourselves. If we can knowanything at all, apart from our own feelings, there mustbe realities independent of us which we discover andknow as they are, not as we choose to define them.

So, we need evangelists�prophetic evangelists,countercultural evangelists�who speak for God, rightlydeclaring Who He Is: �a God of truth� (Dt 32:4) wholives �in truth� (Jer 4:2). To know �truth� about Himinvolves humbly submitting to the reality of His Beingand the Revelation He has given us. Thus, evangelists,especially, should emphasize the objective reality ofGod, telling us Who He Is, highlighting those eternalrealities with which our �truths� correspond. Truth-tellinghas never been �popular.� But that, above all, is theassignment of evangelists�especially in a culture whichdenies that there is any �truth� at all!

provision to break us freefrom sin�s grip today, in amoment in time, is real.Heart holiness, as we knowit, does not make us perfect,as some would representus. What it does do is makeus perfectly capable ofadmitting we are not perfect.It is not that we cannot sin; itis that we need not sin inword and thought every day.The post-modern mindset ofa compartmentalized life isheresy and an insult to HolyScripture. Every part of ourlives are radically changed.We are commanded, �BeHoly.� (Eph. 1:5) So, let�sproclaim the message of fullsalvation!
