At Emerald PUD, we look forward to October every year as a time to recognize public power and its role in the communities we serve. We invite you, our customer-owners, to celebrate with us during Public Power Week! (See event details in the sidebar.)

Monday, October 9— Thursday, October 12 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Dear Customer-Owners,

Next month, Emerald PUD will join more than 2,000 utilities across the nation in celebrating Public Power Week. Together, our utilities serve more than 47 million

customers—customers like you, who enjoy all the advantages public power delivers. This includes lower rates, proven reliability, and local service.

At Emerald, we know each of these benefits is important to you, which is why they have been Emerald’s top priorities throughout our history. Our crews work year-round to increase reliability and minimize

We are proud to be your public power utility. I hope you will join us in celebrating Public Power Week in October.

Sincerely,

Scott A. Coe General Manager

General Manager

Purchasing Agent Matt Mills joined Emerald’s team in March of 2014. He arrived with considerable experience from a local manufacturing company, where he was responsible for purchas-ing and shipping.

In his position at Emerald, Matt is the utility’s go-to person whenever the need for new products and/or services arises. Matt’s purchasing knowledge and inquisitive nature ensure EPUD’s requirements are accurately identified and met by the vendor, and EPUD receives the optimal product and/or service for a fair and reasonable cost.

Matt serves on the Northwest Public Power Association’s Purchasing and Stores Committee, as well as the Institute for Supply Management’s local board of directors.

When he isn’t working, Matt enjoys spending time with his wife, Chelsea, and their daughter, Adelyn. He also enjoys running, hiking, reading, and playing recreational soccer.

National Cyber Security Awareness Month

MEET THE TEAM: Matt Mills, Purchasing AgentKnow Your Board: Brandon Jordan

October is National Cyber Security Awareness Month, a time when computer users are reminded to protect their identities and personal information while using the web. Here are some recommendations from STOPTHINKCONNECT.org for staying safe online.

Brandon Jordan began his service on EPUD’s Board of Directors in

January of this year. We asked him to give his view on what it’s like to serve in this role. Here’s a look at his response:

How do EPUD customers benefit from being served by a public utility?People’s Utility Districts are exactly what they sound like. They exist for the people. This means EPUD’s goal is NOT to make money, but to deliver power at cost to ratepayers. This gives customers the great benefit of lower rates. As a matter of fact, EPUD continues to offer its ratepayers lower rates than its predecessor and that is a key point in our mission statement.

Keep security software current: Having the latest security software, web browser, and operating system are the best defenses against viruses, malware, and other online threats.

Protect all devices that connect to the Internet: Most internet users know to protect their computers with security software, but smart phones, tablets, gaming systems, and other web‐enabled devices also need protection from viruses and malware.

Make your password a sentence: A strong password is a sentence that is at least 12 characters long. Focus on positive sentences or phrases that you like to think about and are easy to remember (for example, “I love country music.”).

Unique account, unique password: Separate passwords for every account helps to thwart cybercriminals.

When in doubt, throw it out: Links in email, tweets, posts, and online advertising are often the way cybercriminals compromise your computer. If it looks suspicious, even if you know the source, it’s best to delete or if appropriate, mark as junk email.
