EWI® of Memphis Team!

I hope everyone had a wonderful Easter time with children, family and friends, survived the daylight savings time change, and is looking forward to increased outdoor activities! My special “delight” at this time of year – flip flops!! Oh glorious free toes!!

We received a Good News announcement in the recent Corporate EWIConnect regarding our application to the

EWI Foundation for a $1000 Grant for B/C/DP:

The B/C/DP Chapter Grants were awarded to each chapter that applied, based on their request to utilize the funds for a 501c3 project benefiting their local communities. The Corporate Office will be issuing the checks this week …..

This provides “cushion” to our annual B/C/DP account and puts us in a great position for our 2016-2017 budget planning for our 501(c)(3) activities.

With an online search for the various events and activities that are available in the general Memphis driving area during April, you can find almost anything – Pat Benatar, The Moody Blues and Gladys Knight in Tunica, Literacy Through Sports, golf, basketball, baseball and even Cinderella on stage.

This led me to start a “punch list” of EWI® of Memphis events. Allow me to

kindly challenge you with this: Are YOU Engaged?

Annual Reading Rally is scheduled for May 20 at approximately 11:30am. Volunteers needed. Author, Perre Magness and Les Passess Kids on the Block will be our partners at the Shrine School in Memphis.

Annual Board Forum hosted by the Chattanooga Chapter, April 29-30, in Chattanooga. Are you able to attend and represent our chapter and bring home new and innovative thinking for chapter growth? Deadline is now!

Straw Ballot details are forthcoming. Nominate yourself or a fellow repre-sentative for the 2016-2017 Board of Directors. You will be enlightened and energized!

Jane Bratton’s executive, Barry Regan, Sr VP Global Supply Chain at Smith & Nephew, Inc., recently hosted his Senior Leadership Team at a Grizzlies game. Besides Memphis, the attendees came from Andover MA; Austin, TX; London, UK; Hull, UK; Baar, Switzerland; The Netherlands; and Dubai, U.A.E. For many of them, it was their first NBA game. They so much enjoyed meeting Grizz, who visited the company suite and served popcorn to the guests before posing for pho-tos. Paige Perkins (Memphis Grizzlies) also visited the suite and welcomed everyone, spreading her brilliant rays of sunshine. Then, Paige’s boss came by to meet Mr. Regan and after learning how far some of these folks had come to see a game, he brought each person a tee shirt. The group was so excited and had a great evening! One of the team members asked “how do I know every-one!?” hmmm … EWI CONNECTIONS! I’ve told my co-workers I am assured of a great perfor-mance review next time around. My boss thinks I’m wonderful and Paige is the reason!

For A Successful Spring Vegetable Garden: Ten Secrets

FUN READ

April 2016

Mem

1. Prepare the Soil First “Build on a good foundation.” Before one seed or transplant goes in, build up your soil with a few inches of compost and whatever nutrients may be lacking. A soil test is a good start to let you know where you are, what you need to add, and how much. 2. Ensure Good Drainage “When it rains it pours.” Plant roots need oxygen and hate to sit in waterlogged soil. Plus, when it is wet you cannot get into the garden to plant or work the soil. Raised beds also warm up faster in early spring for a little head start on the season. 3. Provide Lots of Sunlight “Let the sun shine in.” Select a good site for planting. Most vegetables prefer a full sun exposure. Bright shade or dappled shade just will not do. 4. Proven, Adapted Varieties “Dance with who brung you.” but “Don’t put all your eggs in one basket.” Select varieties that are proven and well adapted to your area. Talk to experienced gardeners and your County Extension Office for suggestions of varieties that are well adapted to your area. 5. Plant At the Proper Time “The early birds get the worm… (but what happens to the early worm?!)” Plant vegetables at the proper time. There is a small window of time in spring between freezing weather and blazing hot weather here in Memphis. If you wait too long to set out tomato plants, your yields will be low at best. If you plant cold-tender veggies too early with no protection, a late frost may spoil the show. 6. JUMP START Transplants ȁHe who hesitates is lost.” Buy good, healthy transplants that are actively growing. Stunted, spindly plants that have not been well cared for will never turn around and be worth a darn. When you plant them, give those new babies a good drink of starter solution and then nurse them along with repeat drinks every few days to get them off and running fast. 7. Resist Overplanting “Don’t bite off more than you can chew.” It is okay to fold the top of a seed packet over and seal it in a jar in the refrigerator for later planting. You do not have to plant all the seeds in the packet. Something inside of us makes us want to plant a big garden. 8. Provide Plenty of Nutrients “An apple a day…” By the time you notice a nutrient deficiency, it is most likely too late to do much for that particular crop. It is better to start with a soil test, build soil each season and fertilize plants lightly but regularly to keep them growing strong. 9. Detect Pests Early “A stitch in time, saves nine.” Pests are easier to control when young and when the infestation is localized or limited. Stroll through the garden every few days and look things over. 10. Stop Weeds Before They Start “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” Weed seeds are hiding out there in the soil, waiting to spoil the best-laid plans for a bountiful garden. When they first appear, try covering the soil surface with newspaper, about four to six sheets thick, which is quickly sprayed with the wa-ter hose to hold it down. Then cover the paper with leaves or pine straw to pretty up the planting and prevent the paper from blowing away.
