This year marks an important change in the way we provide calendar in-formation to our community; in an effort to be sensitive both economi-cally and ecologically, we are dramatically reducing the number of printed calendars. SCHOOL CLOSINGS AND DELAYED SCHOOL OPENINGSSchools can be closed due to adverse weather or other emergencies. School openings can also be delayed. �� -�� !��"�� #�$��the general public.

During a delay, schools open one or two hours after their regularly scheduled times. In the event of a closing, delay, emergency early dismissal or school emergency, middle and high school students will be permitted to walk or take the bus unless there is a health and safety reason that precludes it. In the event of an emergency early dismissal elemen-tary school students are not permitted to travel by bus or to walk home. Parents must make arrangements for elementary age students to be picked up at the school by a parent or guardian or an individual listed on your child’s emergency information card. Any individual authorized to pick up a student during an emergency dismissal is required to show a photo ID.

PLANNED EARLY DISMISSAL FROM SCHOOLA child is never dismissed from school early without a request signed by the par-ent or guardian. This is for your protection, as well as the protection of your child. Your principal is required to make certain that no one is allowed to pick up a child at school during an early dismissal unless the person making the re-quest is the parent, guardian, or the designee listed on the emergency form. WHO IS ELIGIBLE FOR KINDERGARTEN?�� %��&'�� fall entering class of the kindergarten. Registration is held in early spring. In accordance with New York State law, no child may be admitted to school without presentation of these records.

INFORMATION ABOUT ADMISSION

SCHOOL ADMISSIONS POLICYThe Harrison Central School District provides a public education to all district resi-�� diploma and are entitled to attend school. Proof of residency is required before ad-mittance is granted and may be required throughout the student’s educational career in Harrison Schools.

A resident student is one whose legal residence is within the boundary of the dis-trict and whose parent(s) or legal guardian have the same legal residence. Students moving into the district without his/her parents for the primary purpose of attending � ��

Any student who is admitted to the Harrison Central School District and is found not to be a legal resident will be expelled. The student’s parents and/or legal guard-ian will be required to pay prorated fees for the period of time the student attended district schools while not a legal resident.

SUPPORT SERVICES The district provides services other than regular class programs that provide for stu-dents’ diverse learning needs. These services include: Early Childhood Screenings, Psychological Testing, Counseling, Social Worker Services, Special Education Pro-grams, Academic Intervention Services, and English as a Second Language.

STUDENT TRANSPORTATION (Student Eligibility for Bus Service)Transportation will be provided for students in grades K-5 who live further than 1/2 mile from school and students in grades 6-12 who live further than one mile from school. Students in grades K-5 may be expected to walk up to 1/2 mile to an autho-rized bus stop. Students in grades 6-12 may be expected to walk up to one mile to an authorized bus stop. All inquiries regarding bus transportation should be made � �� +��<�� =��>�� = ��$��-phone number is 630-3303.

Measurement of Walking Distances 1. Mileage from a student’s home to school grounds will be measured by a district vehicle.

2. Walking distances to bus route stops will be measured from the end of the property line of the student’s own driveway to the bus route stop.

3. Walking distances to school will be measured from the end of the property line of the student’s driveway to the nearest available driveway of the school, or nearest school property line if the school has no driveway.

4. All walking distances will be measured over publicly maintained roads, sidewalks, or paths; or, in the case of students residing in private/gated communities, distances will be measured over publicly and privately maintained roads, sidewalks, or paths.

SCHOOL DISTRICT SERVICES

SCHOOL HEALTH SERVICES All pupils of the district are provided health services in accordance with state require-ments. Children entering Kindergarten, 2nd, 4th, 7th and 10th grades, or newly en-rolled, are required to undergo an examination by the school or family physician. An �@�� physician is available on our website under Documents and Forms.

In case of illness, parents are called immediately. Parents are required to provide the school with the telephone number of a relative or other authorized person who can be reached if the parent is not at home or is unavailable during school hours. Every effort is made to protect the health and welfare of your child. Parents are invited to consult the school nurse whenever a problem arises concerning their child’s health.

Z��!� �� "�� *��Your child will not be able to attend classes in the Harrison School District until all New York State immunization requirements are met. Students entering the District must show proof of a Tuberculin Test (PPD) within one year of admission or a waiver signed by a private physician indicating that the child is not at risk for Tuberculosis. No medicines will be dispensed in school without written parental permission and physician order.

HOME INSTRUCTION�� [�� \�� their home or a hospital for extended periods of time. ASSESSMENTSThe Harrison Schools provide a comprehensive assessment program for students in Kindergarten through grade 12 including all those required by State and Federal regu-lations. A student’s results may vary and one test cannot determine the range of a child’s ability or achievement. Multiple assessments are provided over the course of a student’s career to provide a more comprehensive picture of student growth. Stan-dardized tests do not measure effort, motivation, organization, study habits or creativ-ity, so other factors are used along with assessment results to provide the most appro-priate educational program for students.

��;&�<+�+��The school district cooperates with the New York State Education Department in the issuance of working papers required by law for students under the age of 18 who seek employment. All students who are residents of the district and who have a need for �� To secure working papers, a student must: 1. Present a parent’s signed permission slip.2. Be checked by a school or personal physician.&��$�� driver’s license.

)�=�>�?+��)?��'&(��]� �� ̂�� "�� services to the children and their families. The Harrison Youth Council also provides assistance to adolescents who are seeking employment and to businesses and individu-als who are seeking to employ them. For information, please call 835-7500.

��+��&��@��) Safety is the most important factor in bus transportation. All buses utilized by the Harrison Central School District are equipped with digital video recording devices that are active whenever buses are in operation.

Seat belts are installed on all buses. Instruction in the proper use of these seat belts � �� [�� stop is very important. Students who behave inappropriately will lose the privilege of riding the school bus.

Bus schedules are mailed to all students eligible for transportation.

If district schools are closed or delayed due to inclement weather or for any other reason, then transportation to private and parochial schools will also be unavailable or delayed.

ATTENDANCEA district attendance policy is available to all parents and is located at www.harri-soncsd.org, under Documents and Forms. Please read and understand your responsi-bilities and discuss this policy with your child/children. Parents are responsible under the School Attendance Laws of New York State for their children’s regular attendance and punctuality. Illness of the child, emergency illness in the family, death in the im-mediate family, inclement weather and religious observations are legal absences from school. New York State law requires a written excuse each time a child is absent or tardy. This excuse should be sent with the child when he/she returns to school after the day of the absence or tardiness. The reason for the absence or tardiness and the date(s) of occurrence should be explained in the note. If a child is out for two or more weeks, a doctor’s statement must accompany the childs return to school. The excuse must be signed by the parent or guardian.

DISTRICT CODE OF CONDUCTThe Board of Education is committed to providing a safe and orderly school environ-ment where students may receive, and district personnel may deliver, quality educa-tional services without disruption or interference. The Board believes that order and discipline is a shared responsibility between school, home and community. Respon-sible behavior by students, teachers, other district personnel, parents and other visitors is essential to achieving this goal, and is critical to a successful academic program.

The district has expectations for conduct on school property and at school functions. These expectations are based on the principles of civility, mutual respect, citizenship, character, tolerance, honesty and integrity.

RELEASE OF INFORMATION AND PRIVACY RIGHTSThe Harrison Central School District will provide, release and publish the following information pertaining to students: student’s name, parents’ names, photographs, video footage, address, age, grade, participation in recognized school activities, extra-curric-ular activities and sports programs, academic honors, achievements, awards, scholar-ships and similar information. This information will be released in district and school publications and programs, as well as in press releases to the local media.

Under Title 34 of the U.S. Code of Federal Regulations, Part 99, parents, guardians and students over the age of 18 have the right to refuse the release of any or all of the above information. Anyone who does not desire to have any or all of the above infor-�� !��$�� $��by September 30th of each year. Failure to make such a request shall be considered consent to release, provide and publish information during the school year.

ASBESTOSHCSD keeps a management plan, approved by the NYS Education Department, on asbestos. District buildings are re-inspected and the plan updated every three years. The district completes a surveillance program on asbestos-containing materials every six months. HCSD meets and exceeds all environmental laws for containing asbestos. ��
