Fiction (Realistic, Historical); Mystery; Fantasy Materials: 11 x 17 paper, coloring materials, blue or black ballpoint pen Requirements: Create a colorful travel brochure based on the setting of the book. Include the following information:

Travel Brochure Template

Directions: Use this template to set up your brochure. Step 1: Fold your 11 x 17 paper once in the center (hamburger-style). Then, fold each outside edge into the center fold. When it is unfolded, you should have 4 equal sections on each side (a total of 8 panels). Step 2: Complete each panel of the brochure. Step 3: Complete the final gate fold. With Side A face up, fold in Sections 3 and 4 at the creases underneath to the center. Then, fold at the center crease one more time so that Section 1 is the front cover and Section 2 is the back cover.

Postcards Book Response Project

Fiction (Realistic, Historical); Mystery; Fantasy

Materials: 8½ x 11 cardstock, coloring materials, scissors, ruler, blue or black ballpoint pen

Requirements: Design and write three postcards to your teacher from one character in your book.

A.  On the back of each postcard, write a short summary of an important story event from the character’s point of view.

B.  Write the summary in a friendly letter format. C.  On the front of each postcard, illustrate the event. D.  Include the book title and author’s name on the front of the

postcard.

Directions: 1.  Choose three important events from the story. Then, choose a

character who witnessed or took part in these events. 2.  Copy the graphic organizer so that you have enough copies for

three postcards. 3.  Complete the graphic organizers with information about the events. 4.  Look at some sample postcards for design ideas. 5.  Depending on your teacher’s instructions, either use an entire 8½

x 11 sheet of cardstock for each postcard, OR measure out the size of the postcard (4.25 inches high x 6 inches wide) with a ruler on the cardstock, and cut out three of them.

6.  Use the template as a guide to help you create the final postcards.

Requirements: Create an award for your book that recognizes something special about it.

A. Design and create a ribbon with the award name on it. B.  Illustrate the book’s cover on the 8½ x 11 paper. Attach the

ribbon to the cover. C.  Include the book title and author’s name on the cover. D.  On the back of the book cover, explain why you are giving

the award to the book. Directions: 1.  Choose an award that your book is worthy of winning. For

CD Album Booklet Book Response Project

All genres Materials: 8½ x 11 white cardstock, colored pencils, scissors, blue or black ballpoint pen Requirements: Create a CD album booklet for the book that you read.

A. On the front cover, illustrate the booklet with a design that best represents the book. Include a title for the album and a name for the band who played the music.

B.  On the back of the booklet, list 10 song titles that represent characters, events, or settings in the book. Also, include the book title and author’s name.

C.  On the inside left page of the booklet, write a short summary of the book.

D.  On the inside right page of the booklet, choose one song from the album, and write the title and lyrics of the song.

Materials: 8½ x 11 paper, colored pencils, blue or black ballpoint pen (optional: computer and printer)

Requirements: Create a picture book version of the book that you read by rewriting & illustrating it for a Kindergarten or 1st grade audience.

A.  Include a front cover with an illustration, the book title, author’s name., and “Rewritten by (your name).”

B.  Include a back cover with an illustration. C.  Each page should have text and an illustration on it. D.  The book should be between 20-24 pages, including covers.

Directions: 1.  Before you commit to this project, think about the story: Is the

story simple enough that you could easily turn it into a picture book, or is it too complicated for a Kindergartner or 1st grader to understand? Could it be condensed (shortened) to about 20-24 pages?

2.  Complete the graphic organizer with the major events of the story and illustration ideas.

3.  Create your picture book with front-to-back pages. Use short sentences and age-appropriate words. Depending on your teacher’s instructions, print the story by hand or type it out, then illustrate it.
