Introductiona) In this essay, I will look at both sides of the argument and give several examples. b) Our world has changed much since the days of our parents, and one of the biggest developments is the way in which we communicate with mobile phones. c) However, some people believe that mobile phones are not always used in a good way. d) In my opinion, mobile phones have both pros and cons to their use. e) Many people agree that mobile phones are important in our life. Body paragraph 1 f) Another benefit is that mobile phones can help people in dangerous situations. g) The most important one is that they help to bring people together more. h) On one hand, there are many benefits to using mobile phones. i) As a result, mobile phones have made the world a smaller place. j) For instance, people can talk to each other wherever they are in the world. k) For example, if tourists have car problems in the desert, they can use their mobile phones to call for assistance, so mobile phones are very useful.l) An example is that people who work abroad can still talk to their families back home any time they like.

Body paragraph 2m) For instance, a pop tune can be annoying when it is very loud and coming from someone’s mobile phone next to you. n) Because of this, movie theatres ask their customers to turn off their phones. o) As a result, many people have been disturbed by a loud mobile phone. p) The main problem is that they are very noisy in public places, such as in restaurants or movie theatres. q) Another problem with mobile phones is that some people do not show respect when they are in a private building, such as a hospital or mosque. r) Consequently, mobile phones cause more stress in society.s) On the other hand, mobile phones can cause problems. Conclusiont) In my opinion, we cannot avoid the changes that technology brings, but we must learn to use such technology in a sensible way and respect the wishes of others.u) In conclusion, I agree to a certain extent that while mobile phones play a positive role in today’s society, they also have their negative effects. v) This is because although mobile phones help to bring people together more and are useful in emergency situations, they can be a problem because they disturb other people and make society more stressful.

Written by Isla Wight

Over the last 60 years, more and more women have chosen to enter the workplace and take paid employment. They wish to have a career or profession, instead of staying at home, and so they are now getting jobs in many different areas, such as government, business and education.

There are good educational reasons why women should enter the workplace. Many women in the UAE are well-educated. For example, more women than men graduate from universities in the UAE – see Figure 1. However, many of these women do not get jobs after they leave university. Instead, they stay at home. Some people say that this is a waste of government resources (money), as these women are not really using what they have learned at university.

There is another reason why women should enter the workplace. It will be good for both government and society. As more and more well-educated women get important jobs in business and government, they will have a stronger influence on important decision-making in their country. Not only men but also women will be responsible for making important decisions in government and business. This will make a more balanced society, where both men and women have power and are equally important. It will also provide a good example for younger generations of women. If young women see other women doing important jobs in the working world, they will want to follow them and do the same.

Written by John Smith

Many Arab women today do not want to stay at home. They want to go out

and work. However, not everyone thinks this is a good thing. Some people think it will be bad for both Arab society and the family.

Firstly, there is Arab society to look at. Traditionally, Arab men and women have had separate roles in work. Women have stayed at home, cleaning the house, cooking and looking after the children. Men have gone out to work. However, some people feel if more women go out to work, these traditions will be lost and there will no longer be separate roles or positions for men and women in Arab society. They believe that such changes are not progress, if they cause the loss of important traditions that people have believed in for hundreds of years.

There are also some practical reasons why women should stay at home. It is too difficult for married women with children to look after their families and also to go out to work. Firstly, time is a problem. If women go out and work, they cannot spend enough time with their children, because they will not be at home during the day. They will be out working instead. Secondly, having a paid job and also being a mother is too tiring

for many women. When these women come home after working hard all day, they will be very tired and maybe they will not have enough energy to play with their children. Therefore, mothers who do not have jobs are better mothers, for these reasons: 1) they can spend more time with their children because they don’t go out to work, and 2) they will also have more energy to play with them each day.

Today, more and more Arab women want to have careers outside the home, as well as having families. This can have important economic benefits to a country and it can also help these women’s families.

Firstly, there are economic benefits. Today, the UAE has a large number of foreign (non-national) workers doing jobs – see Figure 2. The UAE Government plans to reduce the number of foreign workers in the UAE by giving more jobs to UAE nationals. This policy is called “Emiratization.” One way to do this is to get more UAE women nationals to enter the workplace and begin careers. Currently, many UAE women do not have jobs – see Figure 3. If more UAE women nationals get jobs, there will be less need for the government to bring foreign workers (non-nationals) into the country. Therefore, more money will stay in the country, and this will be good for the UAE economy as a whole.

There are also financial benefits to the family if more women go out to work. If both the husband and the wife are in paid employment, then the parents will bring home more money. As a result, the family will have a more comfortable lifestyle because they will have more money to spend. In other words, they will have a higher standard of living.

The Internet is a powerful tool for communication and for distributing information. It is often seen as being only beneficial.Describe the advantages and disadvantages of the Internet.

These days, technology is changing the world. One change is that the Internet is now a big part of modern life. It can be beneficial, bit it may also cause some problems. The following essay will discuss the pros and cons of the Internet.

On one hand, the Internet has some important benefits. Firstly, it has made a lot of information available to anyone with a computer and a connection. For example, school children now have online access to much more information than is held in their school libraries. Another example is that universities are now creating online learning courses. Because of this, more people can study from home. The other main advantage of the Internet is that it has made communication cheaper and more convenient. For instance, email and online chat programmes have made it easy to keep in touch with people almost anywhere, and international calls are much cheaper on the Internet than on the phone. Consequently, there is now more communication between people in different countries.

On the other hand, the Internet may also have some negative effects. The most important one is that a lot of dangerous information can be found there. For instance, people can learn how to make bombs or drugs, which is bad for society. In addition, social networking sites can be dangerous for innocent young people, because if they reveal personal details to strangers, criminals might steal their identity. As a result, those young people could lose control of their bank accounts or credit cards.

Find the two unsuitable conclusions in the following examples:

In conclusion, there are advantages and disadvantages to the Internet. It has given the world great improvements in sharing information and communicating with people, but there are also Internet criminals and dangerous information. I believe that to some extent the Internet is beneficial, but in order to safely enjoy the benefits that it brings us, we need to learn how to avoid its dangers. I advise all Internet users to be careful about how much personal information they share online.

To sum up, the main advantages of the Internet are that communicating with people in other countries and advertising are much easier now that we have the Internet, while the disadvantages are that there are dangerous criminals online and using computers too much can hurt people’s eyes. Therefore I believe that although the Internet is extremely useful, people need to be careful about how they use it.

In conclusion, the Internet can have both positive and negative effects. Although it is now much easier to find information and communicate with people in different countries, it is also a place where criminal activity happens and which contains a great deal of dangerous information. Therefore, although I partly agree that the Internet is beneficial, users must be cautious about trusting information and people that they find on the Internet.

In conclusion, because of these reasons, I believe that using the Internet can be dangerous and that people who use the net need to be careful about who and what they trust there.

On the other hand, online social networking has some bad things. Firstly, there are some bad

people on the internet, and they can use social media to steal money from you. For example, they

might tell you they are from your bank, so you give them your information. Secondly, there is no

privacy. This is because most people do not know that everyone can see the information that they

share. As a result, someone may show bad pictures of you where everyone can see.

n. In most parts of the world, cities are becoming larger because people are moving there from the countryside.

o. Describe the advantages and disadvantages of living in cities.p.q. Put the capital letters, commas and full stops back into the essay below.r.s. nowadays the world’s population is increasing rapidly and people want a higher

standard of living because of this many people have moved from small towns and

villages to live in major urban areas i believe that it can be beneficial but it may also

cause problems the following essay will discuss the pros and cons of living in cities

t. on one hand living in a city has some important benefits firstly the opportunities for

work and promotion are much better than in the countryside for example all major

companies are based in big cities so people who want to get a high-level job in a big

company need to live in a city the other main advantage of living in cities is that cities

have more facilities for people to use such as good hospitals and schools as a result

many families live in major cities because they need good healthcare and education for

their children

u. on the other hand city life may also have some negative effects the main one is that the

environment is often not clean because so many people live so close together there is

usually more pollution in big cities than in small towns

for instance many big cities have problems with noise

and air pollution from traffic because of this cities can

be unhealthy places to live in addition crime is a

serious problem in most major cities this is because

criminals have many more places to hide in large cities

than in small towns consequently cities can be

dangerous places for the people who live there 61

Page 62: Level 3- UGRU English Communication Department Web viewGUIDELINES & TROUBLESHOOTING. Absences: ... For example, if tourists have car problems in the desert, they can use their mobile

v.

w. in conclusion there are advantages and disadvantages to living in a city cities give

people the chance to find a good career and have the facilities that most families need

but they are often polluted and dangerous therefore I believe that people who want to

live in cities should be careful to keep their families healthy and safe

# problems

a. Social network is very creative

TASK – IDEA MAP Complete the idea map for the essay about living in the hostels

(review the topic of living in the hostels. What reasons couldyou give in each paragraph?)

(Body 1)

The first and most important advantage is that it can be easy for students to form study groups

with new friends. As a consequence of this, students can learn ideas from other students and better

develop their knowledge. Another advantage is that students can learn to become independent. For

example, students learn to be organized in how they live and how to take on responsibility. As a result,

students learn a variety of skills because they live in hostels.

(Body 2)

On the other hand, living in a hostel can be a disadvantage since many students miss their

families very much. To illustrate, students can become depressed, and they can suffer from health

problems. Furthermore, many students often eat junk food, and therefore, they can develop other

health problems such as obesity. In short, if students have to live in hostels, they must be careful of

their lifestyle.
