This manual provides directions for administering CTP Online Levels 4-‐10 to students in the grades outlined below. It is important for the teacher who is administering the test to read these directions carefully at least one week prior to testing.
Level Grades
Level 4 Spring of Grade 4 to Fall of Grade 5
Level 5 Spring of Grade 5 to Fall of Grade 6
Level 6 Spring of Grade 6 to Fall of Grade 7
Level 7 Spring of Grade 7 to Fall of Grade 8

Level 9 Spring of Grade 9 to Fall of Grade 10
Level 10 Spring of Grade 10 to Fall of Grade 11
Note to teacher: See the table of contents to find the subtest you are administering. General Information In order for your students’ scores to be comparable to those of the norm group, standard administration procedures must be followed. Computers should be placed far enough apart to discourage copying, and faculty should observe students at all times. The testing room itself should be quiet, well lit, and well ventilated. To avoid disruptions during testing, you may want to post a “Testing, Do Not Distrub” sign.
If you have any questions before, during, or after testing please see your Testing Coordinator or Test Administrator.

Test Timing All of the tests for Levels 4-‐10 are timed. Not all students will be able to complete every question, but the time allotments indicated should allow most students adequate time to answer all of the questions. While the CTP Online is designed to test power rather than speed, an individual student’s reading speed may affect his or her ability to complete a test within the time allowed. You should never begin a test without sufficient time to complete it. Please note that the directions preceding each test are to be read by the students to themselves, and that the time used for reading those directions is included in the time allowed for testing. If it is appropriate for your class, you may allow a break during a test. You will pause the test before the break. It is recommended that you administer only one subtest per session. If you administer more than one subtest per session, there should be a break of at least 30 minutes between tests.

Test Tutorials An online tutorial is included in test delivery at the beginning of each test. The time it takes to complete the tutorial is not included in the recommended timing for each subtest. Administration of the tutorial is expected to take about 10 minutes, but it should not exceed 20 minutes. The tutorials are presented at the start of the test administration to ensure that students are given an opportunity to become familiar with the computer-‐based testing experience. Some of the tests include a “Skip Tutorial” option. If your students are familiar with the tutorial, you can direct them to use this button. Note to teacher: It is recommended that Test Coordinators at your school schedule a "Tutorial Only" session prior to your actual testing dates to fully familiarize students with the online test environment. Please see your Test Coordinator with any questions. Testing with Accommodations Nonstandard administrations may be granted for students who receive testing accommodations under an Individualized Education Program (IEP), who have a Section 504 Plan, or who otherwise have a documented disability that necessitates reasonable testing accommodations. This documentation should be on file at your school. Please see your Test Coordinator with any questions about testing accommodations. A Note About Mathematics Part 1 and 2 The Mathematics subtest contains two parts that can be administered in two testing sessions. It is recommended that students take at least a 10-‐minute break between Parts 1 and 2 if the test is administered on the same day. Students must take both Part 1 and Part 2 to receive a score. When students complete Mathematics Part 1, they will be logged out of the testing session and taken to the secure browser login page. If students are to continue to Part 2, provide the break, then continue. To continue to Part 2, direct students to log back into the testing session. If you do not intend for your students to continue that same day, direct them to close the secure browser login page.

Calculator Use (Optional) Calculator use is permitted only for students taking Mathematics Part 2, Levels 5-‐10. No other subtests allow the use of calculators. On the test day, it is the test administrator’s responsibility to make sure students use acceptable calculators. Prior to administering a Mathematics Part 2 test for Levels 5-‐10 you should tell your students the following:
⎯ They will be allowed to use a calculator in Part 2 only.
⎯ Encourage your students to use a calculator if they are familiar with them and use them with some frequency in class. Calculators should be checked to make sure they are in good working order prior to testing.
⎯ Tell students they may use any four-‐function, scientific, or graphing calculator with the following exceptions:
Calculators with QWERTY (typewriter-‐like) keypads. Calculators with paper tape. Calculators that make noise or “talk”. Calculators that require an electric outlet. Pocket organizers or hand-‐held and laptop computers. Electronic writing pads and pen-‐input devices.
Items Required for Testing Please make sure you have the following items ready for testing day: Equipment ⎯ A computer for the Test Administrator. ⎯ A testing device (computer, iPad, etc.) for each student testing. ⎯ A telephone in the testing room. ⎯ Two sharpened pencils and scratch paper for each student. ⎯ A calculator for students taking Mathematics Part 2 for Levels 5-‐10. (Optional) ⎯ A “Testing, Do Not Disturb” sign. Information ⎯ Test Session number (see the Starting a New Test Session section of this manual). ⎯ All student information present in the CTP Portal including any necessary testing accommodations. ⎯ The Directions for Online Administration (this manual). ⎯ A way to record student absences on test day. ⎯ A way to record any unusual circumstances or interruptions that may affect testing. ⎯ A plan of action to remedy any issues you might encounter during administration (consult your Test
Coordinator).

The verbatim instructions in this manual, which are read aloud to the students, are shown in shaded boxes for easy reference. All other directions are for your information only and are not to be read aloud to students. To maintain a standardized administration only the instructions included in this manual should be read to students. Logging In Go to http://ctponline.erblearn.org and use your username and password to access the CTP Portal to begin test administration.
Managing Testing Sessions A test session is a student’s access point to the test. Test Administrators create the sessions for the subtests they will proctor that day. When a proctor creates a session, a test session number is generated. The proctor will provide this number to all students in the classroom. Students will enter the test session number into the secure browser in order to log into the test for which the session was created. The student will automatically be placed into the test at the level designated in his or her student profile. Please note that many subtests are comprised of two sections. At the end of the first section (the mid-‐point of the test) students will have the opportunity to review their answers for the first half of the test. At the end of the second section of the test, students will have the opportunity to review their answers for the second half of the test. Please note, once students click into the next section of the test, they will not be able to revisit or review any questions in the previous section. The test timer does not stop while students review their answers. All test sessions expire at midnight local time on the day they were created. However, the tests themselves do not expire until the end of the current testing cycle (Fall or Spring). For this reason, if a test session ends or is interrupted and a student still has time remaining on a given subtest, the test may be revisited at a later date under a new session number. If a student’s allotted time for completing a particular test has run out, that student cannot resume testing in another session. For information about restarting a test that has been interrupted please contact your Test Coordinator.
For more help with testing sessions, watch the
“Administering the CTP Online” video tutorial located in the Help &
Resources section of the Portal.

Create a New Test Session Test sessions must be created the day they will be used and cannot be created ahead of time. For security purposes, test sessions expire at 11:59 PM local time on the day they are created. To create a new test session, select Test Delivery in the left-‐hand navigation menu.
Fill in the Session Name field, select the correct Test Administration, and select only the subtest you wish to test from the Subject dropdown menu. Click <Create> to display the Proctor Session screen.
Test Session names should be meaningful. We recommend a name combination of date, testing location (classroom
name and number), grade, and subject.
Check with your Purchasing Coordinator to confirm that there is sufficient inventory
before scheduling a session.

After you create a testing session, the proctor screen will appear. This screen will provide the session number students need to access the session.
NOTE: There is no way to pre-‐assign students to a test session. Students will be automatically assigned when they log in through the secure browser. If students have difficulty logging in, use the Student Lookup link in the right-‐hand navigation links to search for their login information. Use of “Pause” During Testing Proctors may pause a testing session in the case of student illness, computer issues, or other unexpected circumstances. Pausing the test will stop the student’s test timer. The student will be automatically logged out of the test after 60 seconds of being paused or upon their next navigation. Students cannot pause the test, but the proctor may pause the test for them. On the Proctor Session page, click the red pause button to the right of the test location to pause a single student. To pause the entire testing group, click <Pause All>.

Logging Students in for Testing When all students are seated at a computer and the computers are turned on, read the following directions: Say: Please put away any papers, books, rulers, or calculators that you may have on your desk. During testing, you may only use the pencils and scratch paper that I will provide to you now. Distribute pencils and scratch paper for that testing session. Do not continue until all students have put away their materials and pencils and scratch paper have been distributed. Say: Today, you will take the [Test Name] test. We will begin by accessing the test site. There should be no talking until the test has ended and the materials have been collected. You should have only scratch paper and pencils on your desk. If you have any other materials out, please put them away now. Computer Testers If using computers and students are not already on the login screen, read the following directions: Say: Do not enter anything until you have been told to do so. To get to the login screen for the test, double-‐click on the “Secure Browser” icon on your desktop. You should see the login screen for the test site on your computer. Is there anyone who does not see the login screen? iPad Testers If using an iPad and the ERB CTP Online for iPad App is not already open, read the following directions: Say: Do not enter anything until you have been told to do so. To get to the login screen for the test, open the “ERB CTP Online for iPad” App and click on “Take a Proctored Test”. You should see the login screen for the test site on your iPad. The session number is located at the top of the Proctor Session screen. Write this number on the board for students to use during the login process. Say: Enter the Session Number exactly as I have written it on the board. I will also say it to be sure you have the correct number. [Note to teacher: Say the session number slowly and clearly.] Click on “Submit” to move to the next screen. The next screen asks the students for their usernames and passwords. Say: Again, do not enter anything until you have been told to do so. You should see the login screen for the test site on your computer. Is there anyone who does not see the login screen? Assist students as needed. The next step is for students to enter their personal information. Students can log in one of two ways:
⎯ Enter their First Name, Last Name, Birth Month, and Birth Date. ⎯ Enter their Student ID and Last Name.

Approving Students to Test After logging in, students will need to be approved for testing. Students who are waiting for your approval will appear in the “Waiting for Proctor Approval” box on the Proctor Session screen on the Test Delivery tab. When the proctor approves the student, a “Welcome” screen appears. The student can begin testing by clicking on the <Start Test> link. Students will have the option of taking a brief tutorial to remind them how to navigate the testing environment or they may skip directly to the test itself. The test timer will not begin until the student has left the tutorial and entered the test. Click <Approve> to allow individual students to begin the testing process. Click <Approve All Waiting> to approve all students listed in the “Waiting for Proctor Approval” box. Once you have approved all students for testing, you may continue reading instructions: Say: You should now see the “Start Test” link. Please click on that link now. The next screen you should see is the Welcome Screen. Does everyone see the Welcome Screen? Once students are logged in to the test and are on the Welcome Screen, read the following: Say: Once we have reviewed how to use the buttons on the computer, we will begin the test. You may not be able to answer some of the questions. No one is expected to be able to answer every question. Just work carefully and try to answer as many questions as you can. Do not spend too much time on any one question. You may choose an answer even when you are not absolutely sure it is right. If you make a mistake or want to change an answer, just click on the circle next to your new answer choice. The computer will allow only one answer to be selected for each question. Once the test begins, I will not be able to answer any questions you may have about the test. Are there any questions now? [Pause] The proctor should monitor the students’ progress by walking around the testing room and reviewing the Proctor Session screen periodically.
Once all students have successfully logged in and started the test please
refer to the Table of Contents for specific instructions for each subtest.

DIRECTIONS FOR ALL SUBTESTS (EXLCUDING SCIENCE) When you administer any of the CTP Online subtests (excluding science), you should repeat the following directions. If students have taken a test in the online format and are comfortable with it, the tutorial may be skipped. Students can always use the “Help” button to go back to a section of the tutorial if needed. The verbatim instructions in this manual, which are read aloud to the students, are shown in shaded boxes for easy reference. All other directions are for your information only and are not to be read aloud to students. To maintain a standardized administration only the instructions included in this manual should be read to students. Monitor students carefully during both the tutorial and the test administration. Be alert to any students who are struggling with the online test as these students may need to take the test in an individual setting. If a short break is needed you can pause the test, allow the break, and then restart the test for your students. Once students are logged into the test and on the Welcome Screen, read the follow: Introduction Say: Welcome to the CTP Online [Test Name] Test. I’m going to describe some features of the online test before we begin the tutorial. If there is an emergency or if you need to take a break during the test, I will pause your test. When you return, I will need to restart your test. You should raise your hand to indicate you need a break. At the Review Screen you will have the opportunity to review your answers. The system will show you any questions that you did not answer. Remember that there is no penalty for guessing. After reviewing your answers, click the “Finish” button. Once you click “Finish,” you will not be able to go back. If you make a mistake or want to change an answer, just click on the circle next to your new answer choice. The computer will allow only one answer to be selected for each question. Once the test begins, I will not be able to answer any questions you may have about the test. Following is a brief tutorial that describes the different features of the testing system. Are there any questions so far? [Pause]
Answer students’ questions as needed, then proceed.

Mathematics Part 2 Supplemental Directions If you are administering the Mathematics Part 2 subtest read the following directions to your students before continuing to the directions on the following page:
Say: You are allowed to use a calculator for this part of the test only. You may not use a calculator for any other part. You will not need to use a calculator on every question. You should think about how to solve the question and then decide whether or not you should use a calculator. If your calculator stops working during the test, you should continue the test without the calculator. You may not borrow a calculator from another student. [Note to teacher: If you have classroom calculators that the students are familiar with, you may say instead:] If your calculator stops working during the test, I can give you another calculator to use. You may not borrow a calculator from another student. Test Tutorial Say: Now click on the “Next” button at the bottom of the screen. [Carefully monitor students to ensure they are comfortable with the process for navigating.] Say: You should see a screen called “Finding Your Way Around.” We will take a few minutes to review the tutorial together. Once you have read through the tutorial you can practice answering sample questions before beginning the test. Please follow along as I read aloud. You can access information from the tutorial at any point during the test by clicking the “Help” button. Make sure all students have been able to successfully navigate to the correct screen, “Finding Your Way Around.”

Answer students’ questions as needed. Then read the following: Information and Navigation Panels Say: During the test you will find your name, the test name, the current question number and the total number of questions on the test at the top of the screen. Say: At the bottom of the screen you will find two buttons that will help you move through your test. The “Next” button moves you to the next page of the test. The “Back” button moves you back to the previous question on the test. Are there any questions about how to use these buttons? [Pause] Answer students’ questions as needed. Then read the following: Say: Now click on the “Next” button at the bottom of your screen. [Carefully monitor students to ensure they are comfortable with the process for navigating.] Say: Read the sample question on the right side of your screen and think about your answer. Then use your mouse to click on the circle next to the answer you believe is correct. To change your answer, click on a different circle. [Pause to allow students time to read and answer the first sample question.] Are there any questions? [Pause] Now look at the left side of your screen. The chart tells you about more buttons on the test. The “Mark” button allows you to identify a question that you may want to return to later. The “Unmark” button removes the mark button from that question. The “Help” button allows you to review the information from the tutorial during the test.

Scrolling Say: Now look at the other side of your screen. You should see the “Scrolling” screen.
Say: A scroll bar will show up on your screen if a test question is too large to fit on the screen. If you see a scroll bar on the side of your screen or at the bottom of your screen, make sure you use it to look at the whole question. Click the “Next” button at the bottom of the screen and we will learn about the “Review” screen. Review Screen Say: You may click on a question number to go directly to that question, or you can click on the “Review Skipped” button. This button lets you look again at all the questions that you did not answer, and will take you to the first question you skipped. The “Review Marked” button lets you look at all of the questions that you marked while taking the test. Clicking on this button will take you to the first question you marked. The “Review All” button lets you look at all of the questions again. Clicking on this button will take you to the first question in the test. There are two important things to remember about the Review Screen.
One, when you get to the first Review Screen, you are not yet done with the test. You are at the end of the first section and there is another section with more questions to answer if you do not see the “End” button.
And, two, after you review your answers on the first section of the test and click the “Finish” button, then the “OK” button, the test will start the second section of the test and will not be able to return to the questions in the first section.
Please click the “Next” button to see an example of the “Review” screen. Does everyone understand how to go back and review the questions? [Pause]

Say: This concludes the tutorial. Remember that you can access this information throughout the test by clicking on the “Help” button. Answer questions as necessary. Then read the following: Say: Carefully read all directions given on the test. I will not be able to answer any questions about those directions. At the beginning of the test, you will see sample questions that have been answered for you. Say: As you take the test, don’t be surprised or worried if you notice that some of the questions are very easy for you, or that others are very hard. DIRECTIONS FOR THE SCIENCE SUBTEST When you administer the Science subtest, you will give the following directions. It is recommended that students do not skip the tutorial included in test delievery as the Science subtest utilizes unique navigation options that are not present in other subtests. Once students are logged into the test and on the Welcome Screen, read the following: Say: Welcome to the CTP Online Science Test. [Pause]

Please click the “Next” button to see an example of the Review Screen. Does everyone understand how to go back and review the questions? [Pause]
