Leveraging DoD Enterprise SOA Infrastructure capabilities to enable the implementation of a Semantic Web
April 27, 2011
Bottom Line Up Front (BLUF)
This presentation will demonstrate how the DCMO
is leveraging DoD Enterprise SOA Infrastructure
capabilities, such as Enterprise Service Discovery,
Metadata Repository, Machine to Machine
Messaging, and Enterprise Service Monitoring, to
enable the implementation of a Semantic Web
(Web 3.0) environment.

Benefits of a Semantic Approach
•Semantic Technology provides an enterprise wide Business Intelligence capability.
•Because semantics technology expresses meaning logically rather than physically (as in current databases),
• it allows data to be searched, integrated more effectively, and less expensively;
• it eliminates point to point interfaces.
•Because semantic technology is based on open standards and protocols, it reduces vendor lock-in.
•Implementing semantics for business intelligence, reporting, and data integration will lead to reduced IT costs for the Department.

Semantic vs. Relational
SEMANTIC TECHNOLOGY• Data is expressed in a logical formwhich can be used for querying and data integration.• Provides meaning (semantics) to data and schema that is intended to be shared between systems.• Separates the way data is queried, transmitted, and used in a system from the way it is physically stored. • Enables dissemination and querying of data in its logical form.• Simple and inexpensive data integration.
RELATIONAL DATABASE• Data is expressed in a physical form—its logical form cannot be used for querying and data integration.• The meaning of the data is provided by the application built to query it.• Expresses data as a physical schema with no meaning beyond what is needed to store and retrieve it.• Data must be queried and disseminated in its physical form.• Expensive and complex dataintegration.

• An Ontology can be published to the DoDEnterprise Interoperability Controller (IC).
– Global Exchange Service (GEX)
• Serves as the IC in the DoD BMA.
– The original URL is masked behind a URI as provided by the Enterprise Interoperability Controller

Enterprise Service Monitoring
• An Ontology file can be published directly to the DoD Enterprise Service Monitoring tool.
– Thus creating a referential URI
– Admin can view performance metrics on ESM console.
• A Nano agent can be placed on the localhostserver where the Ontology file physically resides.
– Nano agent reports all activity back to ESM tool.
– Admin can view performance metrics on ESM console

Service Discovery & Metadata Registry
• An Ontology file can be published to UDDI (Service Discovery) or to the Metadata Registry (MDR)
– Can publish the physical address of the ontology to the MDR or UDDI.
– The physical address of the ontology file on the localhostcan be masked once published to the UDDI or MDR.
• This generates a URI for the ontology file.
– Can published a proxied address (MRI) of the ontology file to the UDDI or MDR.
– UDDI and MDR accessed via Net‐Centric Publisher.
