Welcome to the annual Broadway at the Gardens production for the 2013-14 season: Jesus Christ Superstar! Broadway at the Gardens is our annual musical production geared toward mature audiences and sophisticated theatre-goers. We strive to find popular theatre works that are not overly produced and have a more dramatic flair than other musical theatre offerings. One of the mainstays of Broadway at the Gardens has been the live orchestra and exquisite vocal talents and this production is no exception. In fact, we think with Cyril Niccolai and Louis Pardo leading this amazingly talented cast, we hope we have raised the bar even higher than our previous productions. One reason Broadway at the Gardens has received critical acclaim is the consistent musical direction of David Lamoureux. This year, we have also handed over the director duties to the innovative Mr. Lamoureux and hope that you will enjoy seeing this beloved show through a fresh perspective that we hope still honors those aspects that fans of the show love. As often is the case with productions that endure over the years, there were several successful revivals. The most notable recent revivals have changed the costuming from tunics and flowing robes to modern clothing and physical production. Given the anachronistic threads which appear throughout all the staged and filmed versions (the “Jesus Christ Superstar” and “King Herod’s song” numbers in particular), the setting seemed less important than the music and the timeless story on which the show is loosely based. In fact, in an interview, the authors themselves said they preferred to see it in a modern context since that was the intent in 1970 when the show was written – to be relevant and timely. Along those lines David Lamoureux has added a few of his own personal directorial touches he hopes will intrigue you and get you to dig deeper into this particular musical theatre staple. We hope that you enjoy the familiar sounds of Jesus Christ Superstar and the experience of this story played out in a new setting under the Directorial vision of David Lamoureux. Enjoy!

He has been rained on exactly 1,436 times. Incredibly that is also his PIN number. The universe is weird that way. He dreams at night, but forgets to remember when he wakes. One of these days he’ll climb a mountain, run a marathon and swim the Great Barrier Reef – in that order. He is trying to make “Kewl” cool, and in his spare time enjoys lighting things.

She is the resident costume designer for Rancho Cucamonga Community Theatre at the Lewis Family Playhouse. Nicki Heskin (Assistant Stage Manager/Properties) first set foot in Lewis Family Playhouse as an audience member for Broadway at the Gardens last production, A Chorus Line. She returned in the summer of 2012, performing in the ensemble of The Wizard of Oz and stayed, taking a position working part-time as a cultural arts assistant for the indomitable Patrick Hediger, helping with Rancho Cucamonga Community Theatre and Broadway at the Gardens. She is excited to work on the production team with this fantastic cast and creative team, and thanks Patrick, David, Daniel and Cheryl for the opportunity and encouragement.

Patrick Hediger (Producer) Prior to coming to the City of Rancho Cucamonga as the cultural arts coordinator in 2005, Patrick toured the U.S. with national Broadway musicals and plays. He has served the Los Angeles arts community for more than 20 years having worked with Walt Disney Theatrical Productions, the Orange County Performing Arts Center, Center Theatre Group, The Hollywood Bowl, The Los Angeles Opera and the John Anson Ford Amphitheatre (for the Los Angeles County Arts Commission).
