Each month, Just Food will be visiting an urban garden in the Ottawa area. In September, we toured the Lexington Green Life gardens at 507 Riverdale avenue. The first time you enter the grounds of the Lexington Apartments in Old Ottawa South, you can't help but be charmed by the lush vegetable plot near the parking lot. It turns out, though, that that garden is only the tip of the iceberg. Behind the building, three rows of raised beds line the road that cuts through the neatly manicured lawns. A profusion of heavily laden vegetable plants—tomatoes, peppers, Brussels sprouts, corn, eggplants, broccoli, and more—fill the sturdy wooden frames. Potted herbs and greens balance on the edges of some of them. No space is wasted. A few years ago, the small plot in the front of the building was the only option for the many tenants who wanted to garden. During discussions with the landlord, Ottawa Community Housing, the tenants let it be known that additional gardening space was a top priority. In 2013, the building operator purchased the wood for three raised beds. And so Lexington Green Life garden was born! As the garden flourished, more individuals became interested in this endeavour, and its organizers determined that they needed additional plots. They submitted an application to the Community Garden Development Fund. They were successful, and four new garden beds were added in 2015, and twelve more in 2017, bringing the current total to 19, some of which are shared in order to meet the constant demand.
