Are you a Wise Owl or a Head-Burying Ostrich when it comes to that d-word?THIS month, we discuss the many complexities which can arise from NOT making a Will.WHAT MOST PEOPLE THINK OR HOPE!

IF you die without a Will, all your money and possessions (your Estate) will be distributed, according to strict legal rules and regulations. These rules are called the Laws of Intestacy. In many cases, the Intestacy Laws distribute an Estate in a way the deceased would not have wanted, sometimes with disastrous results.

YOUR CIRCUMSTANCES will fall into one of the following categories: Married, Cohabiting or Single.

MARRIED: In the event of the death of a married person, the Intestacy rules divide the Estate into shares, with a share going to the surviving husband or wife (the spouse). The amount a spouse can inherit is restricted to an amount set by the Government.

THE POPULAR BELIEF that a spouse automatically inherits everything is simply not true. This is because your nearest blood-relations (children, parents, brothers, sisters etc.) are also entitled to take a share under the Intestacy Rules inherit, with the rising values of Estates, the SPOUSE'S SHARE could be the smallest one.

FACT: If you have not made a Will, even your life insurance policies will not be paid until probate has been granted, unless they are written into trust! (Probate will take many months, sometimes years, to be granted!).

FACT: If your Children are orphaned and you have not appointed a guardian in a Will, then Social Services will decide who looks after them, including allocating them to Foster Parents).

FACT: If there are no surviving members of your family, the whole Estate would go to the Crown (Government).

COHABITING: Thousands of people live together without getting married. Unfortunately, most think that, after a few years together or if they have become a Common Law husband or wife and have same rights as a married person. Let there be no doubt about this. If you live with another person unmarried (including single-sex couples), with respect to finance and inheritance you are known as a Cohabitee and do not have the same rights as a married person. The general term, Common Law, means law-based

judicial decisions and custom.

SO, if you are Cohabitee, the information on single people is more appropriate to you.

SINGLE: If a single person dies without a Will, the line of Inheritance can be complicated and can often involve relatives you have never even met!

HERE WE GO... first, you children will inherit your whole Estate - if there are no surviving children, next in line are your grandchildren - if you have no grandchildren, then both your parents - if both have died before you, then your brothers and/or nieces - if none, then your cousins (however far removed) and, if no cousins, everything goes to the Government... phew!

IF you are single and without a Will, I can hear you are thinking: 'Well, that's OK, it will go to my children, anyway'). That may be partly true, but what is also true is that it will take months and, possibly, years to sort out your affairs (obtain Probate), and the Solicitors who sort this out will charge THOUSANDS OF POUNDS for their work. This is money that, for the sake of making your Will (£69), you could have left your Children!

Even if you have no Children or close family, many people would want their Estate to go to CLOSE FRIENDS or a CHARITY, rather than the GOVERNMENT OR UNKNOWN RELATIONS.

Inspired by Shakespeare's 'The Tempest' and packed with rock 'n' roll classics, such as 'Heard It Through The Grapevine', 'Young Girl', 'Great Balls of Fire' and 'GLORIA', the show features stunning special-effects and a brilliant cast of actor-musicians. Enthused The Daily Express: "The best rock 'n' roll show in town!"

9 Friday, April 10th, sees popular chanteuse, Nicola Marie, presenting her Lady Gaga and Amy Winehouse Tribute at Baddeley Green WMC. Nicola's Lady Gaga has been officially recognised as the best in Europe, and she also duplicates Amy Winehouse's soulful voice beautifully. In 2012, she made it all the way to 'Judges' House' on 'The X-Factor'. The Tribute Night is a Pink Ribbon event, and admission costs £5.

19 Pascal Roge is one of the great interpreters of French music, and, for several years, has enjoyed playing recitals for four hands with his partner, Ami. The organisers of the 2014/15 Harding Trust Piano Recitals are delighted that they will be performing together at the season's finale in the Forum Theatre at the City Museum & Art Gallery, Hanley, on Thursday, April 23rd, at 8pm. The programme will comprise Faure's 'Dolly Suite', Debussy's Six Preludes (solo), Schubert's 'Albumblatt', the Fantasie in F minor Op. 103 by Bruckner, Mozart's Sonata in C major and the Four Slavonic Dances of Dvorak.

20 From Wednesday, April 1st, to Monday, May 4th, you are invited to be part of National Pet Month 2015. During this period, thousands of people up and down the country will be celebrating life with their pets, spreading the word on responsible pet-ownership or raising money for their favourite charity in fun-filled events (with details available on the website: www.nationalpetmonth.org.uk)! NPM is not just about fund-raising, however; it is also about raising awareness of how pets make people's lives happier and healthier, and how we can repay these creatures by looking after them responsibly. Each year, the NPM's message is conveyed by running its events under a central theme: in 2015, it is 'Pets and the elderly: enjoying later years together'.

POTTERIES AUCTIONS

Stunning Doulton figure'MOORISH Minstrel' is a rare and early figure, manufactured by Royal Doulton at its Burslem factory. It was modelled by Charles Noke, and decorated in the Robert Allen Studio.Featuring a gilded base, this stunning piece is decorated in enamel with a floral design (in brown, blue and red hues), and has a height of 36.5cms.

Brand-new, Silverdale showroom continues Potteries Auctions' expansionTHIS month of April is proving an especially exciting time for this acclaimed, well-established, local company!

For, Potteries Auctions - one of the leading, provincial auction houses in the North-West, and possessing a nonpareil knowledge of 20th century British ceramics - has reinforced its expansion by moving from Cobridge, in Stoke-on-Trent, to much larger, brand-new premises in Silverdale, in neighbouring Newcastle-under-Lyme.

To mark this momentous relocation, it is holding a celebratory event, featuring an official opening by a VIP guest, on the evening of Friday, April 24th, followed by the auctioning of several collectors' items, antiques and pottery, including a rare Royal Doulton 'Moorish Minstrel' figure and an (even rarer) exceptional Moorcroft exhibition vase (boasting a £10,000-£20,000 estimate), on Saturday, April 25th, at its new 'home' - Unit 4A, Aspect Court, Silverdale Enterprise Park.

"We are excited about the move, and we are looking forward continuing to build on our strong reputation and the services we provide," said Kathy Plaskitt, who has been appointed Potteries Auctions' Manager to take the company forward.

"The fantastic, new and larger premises will allow us to expand the company and continue to offer our customers, whether buying or selling, a great service.

"Potteries Auctions has dealt with the beautiful, the wacky and the rare, so why not drop in and see us - the kettle is always on!"

Famous for its monthly Fine Art, Antique and

Collectibles Sales, Potteries Auctions was founded by Bill Buckley in 1991, since when it has established an enviable reputation for selling pottery at world-record prices.

The company's first Fine Art and Antiques Sale in its new showroom at Silverdale on Saturday, April 25th, promises, therefore, to be an exciting auction, with rare pottery items and extensive collections being sold.

"We have one of the finest collections of Crown Derby, along with a rare Moorcroft exhibition vase, a rare Royal Doulton figure and a number of Colin Melbourne paintings to be auctioned," explained Kathy Plaskitt.

Prior to the auction on Saturday, viewing will take place on Thursday, April 23rd, and Friday 24th, from 10am to 5pm.

"It's a great time to sell, so now is the time to head up the loft and find those 'hidden treasures'; Potteries Auctions is always happy to valuate readers' items for you, and sell them at our regular auctions," added Kathy, who can be contacted at the new, Silverdale showroom on (01782) 638100 or at [email protected] "Exquisite" Moorcroft vase is

April auction's 'star lot' THE 'jewel in the crown' amongst the myriad 'gems' to be found at Potteries Auctions' event on Saturday, April 25th, is this rare William Moorcroft Flambé Eventide Exhibition Vase.

Signed by the great William Moorcroft (founder of the world-famous company) himself, this outstanding piece stands at an enormous 59cms (that's almost two feet 'in old money!) high, and has its original, silver-plated stand and cover.

Dated 1928 (with an impressed 'Made in England Moorcroft' stamp), the vase is decorated with a beautiful Flambé Eventide design, featuring trees all-round and boasting an even colour.

Also, the flambé around the rim is exquisite, with a high-fired, lustre effect.

(Both the founder, William Moorcroft, and his elder son, Walter, experimented with high-temperature flambé techniques, producing high glaze with colour).

The impressive mounts are silver-plated, and were made in Hanley, Stoke-on-Trent, by the Duchess of Sutherland Silversmiths (known colloquially as the 'Cripples Guild'), under the guidance of Francis Arthur Edwards.

The mounts are of extremely-high quality, with impressive, floral decoration, and would have been made around 1920.

(A similar vase was photographed at the forefront of the 1926 White City exhibition in London, and can be seen in Paul Atterbury's 1987 Moorcroft book).

"As far as we are aware, a vase with these mounts has never been sold before has never been sold before, which makes this a rare and incredible opportunity," Manager, Kathy Plaskitt, told us.

"Nearly 90 years after its manufacture, Potteries Auctions is proud to be offering this exceptional piece.

"This vase was purchased privately several years ago in Canada, where it was believed to have been in the same family for over 60 years, and has been in a UK collection ever since."

LASTING POWER OF ATTORNEYDO YOU WANT ONE?

PLAN AHEAD AND CREATE A LASTING POWER OF ATTORNEYTHE vast majority of us do not like to think about the possibility of losing our mental capacity, and consider how we would cope with our financial affairs in that eventuality.

But, consider the statistics: there are, in the UK, around 850,000 people with dementia (of whom 40,000 are under 65), with this number forecast to exceed one million by 2025 (according to the Alzheimer's Society).

(There are, of course, other reasons why you may not be able to make some decisions for yourself; these include learning disabilities, mental health problems and stroke or head injuries - and all are protected by the Mental Capacity Act [2005] and its Code of Practice).

It is, therefore, eminently prudent to look to the future and plan ahead, in order to ease the potential burden on your relative, should this occur - by creating a lasting power of attorney (LPA).

A LASTING POWER OF ATTORNEY CAN ERASE THE STRESS OF COPING WITH BILLS AND ACCOUNTS!

What IS a lasting power of attorney?

An LPA is is a legal document that allows you to choose other people whom you wish to make decisions on your behalf, including a time when they you lack the requisite, mental capacity to do so.

It is crucial that an LPA is 'completed' while you are still mentally capable, well before you require it.

It cannot be used BEFORE it has been registered with the Office of the Public Guardian ([OPG], part of the Ministry of Justice), but it CAN be used immediately after said registration, unless the person making the LPA has included a restriction that means it cannot be utilised until he or she has lost capacity.

The person making the lasting power of attorney is legally referred to as the 'donor'.

The people (or trust corporation)

chosen to make decisions on your behalf are your 'attorneys'.

There are TWO types of LPA:-

* Property and financial affairs (allowing an attorney to make decisions about paying bills, dealing with the bank, collecting benefits, selling your house etc.).

* Health and welfare (allowing decisions on treatment, care, medication, where you live etc.).

The benefits of making an LPA

An LPA allows you to plan in advance:-

* the decisions you want to be made on your behalf if/when you lose the capacity to make them yourself.

* the people you want to make these decisions.

* how you want the people to make these decisions.

Having an LPA is a safe way of maintaining control over decisions made for you because:-

* It has to be registered with the OPG before it can be used (if someone else tries to register if you and your attorney[s] will be able to make an objection).

* You choose someone to provide a 'certificate' confirming that you understand the significance and purpose of it.

* You can choose 'people to be told' about your LPA when it is registered (so that they have an opportunity to raise concerns).

* Your signature, and the signatures of your chosen attorneys must be witnessed.

* From a legal perspective, your attorney(s) must follow the code of Practice of the Mental Capacity Act 2005 - if they don't always act in your best interests, the OPG can step in, and your attorneys(s) may be held accountable.

* The OPG provides helpful support and advice.

NURSERY TIME 2015The best start in life!'TO stimulate and educate the children we care for': the mission statement of Roosters Day Nursery, where the fully-qualified staff has one, single objective in common with you, the parent, and that is a desire to provide the best start in life for your child/children.A more idyllic location (on the edge of Betley Village, situated in rural countryside, with pleasant views) could not be found than that enjoyed by this 44-place nursery, which opened in 1997, and provides a safe and stimulating environment for your child."Our aim is to allow your child to gain understanding and knowledge by by learning through play," explains Ruth Morris, Officer-in-Charge.The children are nurtured in three groups, age-dependent, and each group is looked after by a qualified team of caring staff, responding to and fulfilling the needs of each child. The nursery's secure, outdoor play-area provides its charges with an ideal opportunity for daily, physical development, and the garden offers both soft and hard play-areas, providing outdoor experiences (whatever the weather).Ofsted-registered Roosters is a 'feeder' nursery for all, three schools in the area (Betley, Meadows and John Offley), offering a 'wraparound service' to, and from, them; additionally, it provides Afterschool care for John Offley children, and on-site care for Betley and Meadows.

'HOME-FROM-HOME' NURSERIES EXCELTHE opening of Moorcroft Grange in September, 2014, was the latest stage in the admirable development of The Old Rectory Kindergarten, at Cobridge, in Stoke-on-Trent.

The Old Rectory was, initially, launched in 2003, as a 'home-from-home' nursery, and Moorcroft Grange continues this founding premise, further extending its working-links with the people of Cobridge.

Earlier in 2014, Cobridge Community Centre (located on adjacent Bursley Road) had been purchased, and, as Moorcroft Grange, it has been refurbished, so that a number of its rooms are available for use by local people as, for example, educational classes (in Maths, English, Cookery etc., according to public request) and a coffee bar.

Basting 79 places for children, aged up to eight years, Moorcroft Grange is the third nursery to be established, following the launch of Manor House, Knutton, in Newcastle-under-Lyme Borough, which opened on Knutton High Street, in April, 2013.

"We wanted to expand into training and offering classes for parents, and we have the room to do that at Moorcroft Grange," said a spokesperson for The Old Rectory Kindergarten.

"With the Government extending the free nursery entitlement, we saw an increase in demand at our original nursery."

As with TheOld Rectory and Manor House, the aim of the co-proprietors and hand-picked, highly-qualified staff is to offer the area's children a 'home-from-home' nursery, providing a safe, secure (and, importantly, 'fun') learning environment for their charges, allowing them to flourish and reach their full potential.

The development of Moorcroft Grange is a direct result of the huge popularity and burgeoning reputation for excellence enjoyed by The Old Rectory, with the demand for its services growing much quicker than could have been expected!

Housed in a superb, Victorian building (dating back to 1850), The Old Rectory offers myriad, exceptional facilities, including a fantastic, extensive external play-area (which is, naturally, totally secure); sensory garden; a new play-area; grassed area (ideal for picnic-teas); and a 'Pets' Corner', which, needless to say, is a big favourite with the children.

Staff-members pride themselves on promoting healthy foods and lifestyle, and all meals, freshly prepared each day by the nursery's excellent ch`ef, using home-grown fruit and vegetables.

The Old Rectory was lauded as 'Outstanding' in all areas by Ofsted (Office for Standards in Education, Children's Services and Skills).

At Knutton, Manor House is bright and airy, and designed to be an extremely child-friendly environment, with age-dedicated rooms, which flow naturally from one to another, helping children during transition.

(Each room has access to the outside area, allowing daily free-flow play).

ADAPTED EALING CLASSIC IS "COMIC BLISS"!!A NEW adaptation of the Ealing classic, 'The Ladykillers', which had critics and audiences in raptures during a smash-hit, West End, is coming to Newcastle's New Vic Theatre in April.

When criminal mastermind, Professor Marcus, and a motley crew of misfits pose as amateur musicians to rent rooms from the sweetly eccentric Miss Wilberforce, the police have no idea that they're planning a daring robbery.

However, Miss Wilberforce is not so easily deceived.

With his brilliant plot rumbled, the Professor decides that there's only one way to keep the old lady quiet, Miss Wilberforce must face the music - and he doesn't mean a string quartet!

Directed by Mark Babych, 'The Ladykillers' has been

adapted from the motion picture sacreenplay of William Rose by BAFTA and Emmy Award-winning comedy writer, Graham Linehan ('Father Ted', 'Black Books', 'The IT Crowd'), and is being performed at the New Vic by special arrangement with StudioCanal and by special arrangement with Fiery Angel Ltd., London.

"Comic bliss" enthused The Independent of this show, which received five moninations for the 2012 Laurence Oliver Awards.

A New Vic and Hull Truck Theatre Production, 'The Ladykillers' runs from Friday, April 10th, to Saturday, May 2nd, at 7.30pm, with a 2.15pm matinee performance on Saturday, April 25th.

Tickets (priced at £13-£22, with group-discounts of £2 for parties of ten or more, £2 off for concessionaries and Under-26s Go Free) can be purchased from the New Vic Box Office on (01782) 717962, or online at www.newvictheatre.org.uk

CAN STANLEY SURVIVE HIS HELLISH 'BEANO'?!HAROLD Pinter's second, full-length drama is Congleton Players' next production at Daneside Theatre in 2015.

'The Birthday Party' is a 'comedy of menace', and its action takes place in the living-room of a seedy boarding house in an anonymous, seaside town.

Meg Bowles runs the house, while her husband, Petey, works as a deckchair attendant on the beach.

Stanley Webber is their only 'guest' - a cuckoo in the nest, in an open-ended, parasitic relationship with the Bowles, as he hides from his guilty past and uncertain future in their home.

Stanley's bolt-hole is invaded by two, other 'guests', Goldberg and McCann, whose mission (to break him and return him to 'Monty') soon becomes apparent.

A party is arranged by Goldberg, upon hearing Meg's suggestion that it is Stanley's birthday, and the occasion is used as a vehicle for Webber's psychological breakdown and removal.

"Ambiguity and contradiction

abound as a fundamentally simple plot reveals itself to be full of smoke and mirrors," say director, Glyn Matthews.

"Herein lies the joy of the play, and, for me, as director, the urge to connect with it time and time again."

PLAYWRIGHT, Harold Pinter (1930-2008).

The cast comprises David Burt (as Petey), Dee Melia (Meg), John Beech (Stanley), Beckie Morley (Lulu), Ian Pickford (Goldberg) and Andrew Jones (McCann).

'The Birthday Party' can be enjoyed from Tuesday, April 21st, to Saturday, April 25th, starting at 7.30pm.

Tickets, priced at £6 (Tuesday), £8 (Wednesday-Saturday) and £7 (concessionary), are available from Congleton Tourist Information Centre, Tel: (01260) 271095.

Reversing the 'age-clock'REGULAR, brisk walks can delay the shrinking of the brain and the faltering, mental skills which old age often brings, say scientific researchers.

Studies on men, aged 60 to 80, revealed that taking a short walk three times a week increased the size of brain regions linked to planning and memory during the course of a year.

The prefrontal cortex and hippocampus increased in size by only 2% or 3%, but that way was enough to offset the steady shrinkage that doctors expected to see over the same period.

"It may sound like a modest amount, but that's actually like reversing the age clock by about one to two years," said Professor Kirk Erickson, a neuroscientist at the University of Pittsburgh.

"While the brain is shrinking, we actually saw not a levelling out but an increase in the size of these regions. It was better than before we started the study."

People, who took part in the study, scored higher on spatial memory-tests and some reported feeling more mentally alert, according to Professor Erickson, who added: "They feel better, they feel as if the fog has lifted. Anecdotally, it seems to benefit these cognitive functions."

Erickson recruited more than 100 adults who confessed to doing little, if any, exercise in their daily lives. Half were randomly assigned to walk for 30 to 45 minutes, three days a week. The rest spent a similar amount of time doing stretching exercises.

Medical scans showed minor increases in the two brain-regions to both groups. But the effect was greater in the walkers, averred Professor Erickson at the annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

"With modest amounts of exercise, we were able to increase the size of of these structures that typically deteriorate and precede the

cognitive complaints that often come in late adulthood," he stated.

"People are misled into believing they need years of vigorous physical exercise. But it only needs to be moderate and not even that long.

"The results suggest that brain and cognitive function of the older adults remain plastic and highly malleable. There is not this inevitable decline that we used to think it was."

Scientists are unsure what changes in the brain underpin the increase in size of the two regions, or how long the improvements last. Exercise is unlikely to stave off the brain's decline for long, but it could delay it and slow the onset of dementia.

There is a desperate need for any approach that could help in

the fight against dementia. An estimated 44.4 million people have dementia worldwide and that number is expected to reach 75.6 million in 2030, according to figures from Alzheimer's Disease International.

"The prefrontal cortex is involved in a lot of higher-level cognitive functions and the hippocampus is involved in memory-formation. And when it shrinks, it leads to Alzheimer's disease and dementia," explained Erickson.

"If we measured these people for a long period of time, we'd probably be slowing the decline, rather than completely mitigating it. But it might slow down for long period of time. We cannot say it's the magic-bullet cure for Alzheimer's. There isn't one."

Back where they belong....!!"THE pub's flying - the customers are coming back in droves!" Thus, Jeff Matthews about The Clough Hall.

After four months in Nottinghamshire, Jeff and partner, Dee Cole, have triumphantly returned to this landmark hostelry in Kidsgrove, having initially 'turned it around' in rapid fashion in 2013!

The popular couple left the Clough Hall Road pub for Lambley, near Mansfield, on Monday, October 6th, 2014 , but made a welcome return to it on Monday, February 2nd, determined to restore it to the high standards which it enjoyed during their first season as 'mine hosts'.

And people have, accordingly, 'voted with their feet' - and the Kidsgrove venue is, once again, thriving!

For, The Clough Hall provides its many customers (regulars and visitors alike) with a superb, friendly, relaxing, all-round experience, offering good food at ultra-reasonable prices and an excellent choice of drinks.

Readers will discover a great selection of good, traditional pub food (snacks, starters, sharing dishes, baguettes, jacket potatoes, melts, 'burgers, salads, grills, steaks, puddings etc., plus 'Specials Board'), which is available at lunchtime (12 noon-3pm) and early evening (5-8pm), Monday-Saturday, while lovers of the classic Sunday 'roast' (served 'with all the trimmings') can tuck into a nonpareil repast between 12 noon and 4pm.

And there's more, since discerning diners can also enjoy Dee and Jeff 's 'Curry Night' (just £4.95, plus free pint) each Wednesday and their 'Steak Night' (also with free pint) every Thursday.

These offers are available from 12 noon to 8pm; all you have to do is book on (01782) 773921.

Needless to say, there's a refreshing choice of drinks (including a bottle of house wine [red, white or rosé] for only £7.25, and you can 'double' up any spirit for just £1.25!), and 'real ale' aficionados can quaff pints of the pub's beautifully-kept regular cask ales, Marston's Pedigree (4.5% ABV) and Wychwood Brewery's Hobgoblin (5.2%), plus a 'guest ale'.

Live entertainment by soloists and duos can be enjoyed on alternate Friday evenings, and a fabulous afternoon of perennially-popular karaoke is lined up for Easter Sunday (April 5th), from 4 to 7pm.

Prior to that, the pub's beer garden (complete with children's play-area) opens on Wednesday, April 1st (no fooling!).

The Sunday Quiz Night (for individuals or teams of up to a maximum of six) starts at 8pm, and offers cash-prizes, plus a £20 drinks-voucher as first prize.

The pub features a huge, open-plan Games Area, which is ideal for darts, crib, dominoes and pool enthusiasts, plus TV for sports matches.

We're always looking for players for our indoor games teams," said Jeff, who previously ran pubs at Coventry, Ashbourne and Cheadle.

The Clough Hall is also a first-class venue for a wide range of functions (weddings, funerals, christenings etc.), with catering available, if required.

The railway now offers TradiTional pub fare!"AMAZING atmosphere already. Come on down!"Just one of the myriad, fulsome endorsements of this rejuvenated public house in Alsager on its popular Facebook pages, where new 'mine hosts', Chris and Zoey, have made such a refreshing impact, since taking over on Friday, September 19th.The great news is that The Railway Inn, at Alsager, has now added traditional pub fare (available from 12 noon to 8pm, Sunday-Thursday) to its many attractions, which include a mega-selection of hand-pulled 'real ales' and live entertainment. Not only that, but sports-oriented customers can enjoy all the latest action on big-screen TVReaders will discover that EVERYONE (and that includes children [until 9pm]) is welcome at the Audley Road hostelry, and there's something to attract all customers - from 'real ale' aficionados to music-lovers.As a free house, The Railway Inn offers lovers of 'real' beer a choice of no less than NINE, traditional, cask-conditioned brews as regulars and 'guests' (including acclaimed Abbot Ale, Old Speckled Hen and St. Edmund's) - all lovingly kept by landlord, Chris.Live entertainment (by soloists and pop/rock bands) can be enjoyed most

weekends, and the line-up for April includes Jamie Ashton (3rd), perennially-popular Karaoke (4th), Vanessa Bebbington (10th), Vavoom (11th) and Kings and Aces (24th).Meanwhile, you can enjoying alternating 'Open Mic' and 'Acoustic' Nights on Wednesday; indeed, the pub interior displays a 'WANTED' poster, encouraging singer/songwriters and acoustic musicians for the Wednesday evening 'Acoustic Showcases', when they are invited to perform solo or play along with the rest of the enthusiasts!

The popular couple have also run The Old Queen's Head, at Swan Bank, in nearby Talke, for the past, three years, and this venue, In Newcastle-under-Lyme Borough, offers an Acoustic Night on the last Wednesday of each month and live

entertainment by artists every Saturday, with April featuring Amanda on the 4th, Gemma (11th), Eddie Lee (18th) and the 'Wedding Singer', Fielding Talks (25th).In addition, Crewe Helicopter Club meets at the Talke pub on the first Wednesday of each month.Traditional pub games are strong attractions at both pubs, with Monday Darts Night, and Tuesday Cribbage sessions at The Old Queen's Head,. while free-entry Quiz Nights (with Bingo) are also offered (on Tuesday at The Railway, and Thursday and Sunday at the Talke hostelry). Open from 12 noon to 12 midnight, Monday-Sunday, The Railway Inn boasts its own traditional 'real fire', beer garden and

smoking-area. Now part of the portfolio of Stafford-based Reclamation Inns Limited, the historic pub was originally built by industrialists in 1835, and pre-dates Alsager station, which was constructed 13 years later, to serve the area's thriving industry by linking the neighbouring Potteries to the rail network at Crewe.

Lamb - a time-honoured, Easter favourite!CELEBRATING the genuine arrival of Spring, Easter offers readers of all ages with a great opportunity to enjoy eating delicious culinary fare.

In time-honoured fashion, ham and lamb are traditionally served for Easter lunch and dinner,

whilst accompaniments should eulogise the fresh, new flavours of the Spring season, such as asparagus, lemon and fruits, like raspberries and strawberries (finally seeing off the drabness of Winter).

Needless to say, Easter wouldn't be Easter without lamb, which has the range to delight all your family's varied tastes over the holiday weekend.

For instance, what could be more enticing than smoky, spicy Asian lamb cutlets for the more adventurous, or light, Parmesan-crusted fillet with a crisp salad (should the weather [unusually] decide to behave itself?

In addition, you can give a new 'twist' to the traditional, Sunday repast of roast lamb by the use of anchovies, garlic, lemon and rosemary!

LIGHT, Parmesan-crusted fillet of lamb, served with a crisp salad.

'The Customer is King' hereTHAT phrase admirably sums up the approach which Lee Cocker brings to his Leek-based business!

Located at the heart of the 'Queen of the Staffordshire Moorlands', Field Street Auto Services offers a friendly and approachable facility for owners of all makes and models of vehicles.

Sited (as its name suggests) on Field Street, which links Strangman Street to High Street, and just a short walk from Leek town centre, the garage majors in ALL aspects of motor vehicle repairs and maintenance.

However, sole proprietor, Lee, is just as concerned to foster excellent customer-relations at his business, since he is committed to providing motorists with premier-quality workmanship.

Indeed, Lee's aim is to keep his customers fully informed about their motors, in order to avoid any unexpected bills!

"I want to work with motorists, so that the garage provides the most sensible and cost-effective way of keeping you on the road," explained 35-years-old Lee, who enjoys a working-lifetime's experience of the garage industry, having started Saturday work at a garage in Buxton at the age of 15.

The Field Street business's services include (but are, crucially, not limited to) MoT-preparation and repairs, servicing, exhausts, clutches, timing-belts, diagnostics, modifications and alterations.

"We can also arrange performance and ECU remapping," said Lee, who

worked his way up in the trade, eventually running a garage, located near Longnor, before he relaunched Field Street Auto Services as a properly-functioning garage on September 30th, 2013.

In spite of the garage's central location, parking is not a problem, and readers can pay Lee a visit at your leisure, have a chat and discuss their requirements.

Field Street Auto Services offers generously-long opening-hours to suit motorists' varying work-schedules and availability: 8.30am-6.30pm (Monday-Friday) and 9am-3pm (Saturday).

You can contact Lee there on (01538) 387629 or via email: [email protected]; additionally, you can visit his business on Facebook.

We are located on Field st, Leek which is the joining road between Strangeman st & High st.

We carry out all aspects of motor vehicle repairs on all makes and models

Our services include MOT preperation, MOT repairs, servicing, exhausts, clutches, timing belts,

diagnostics, modications & alterations. We also arrange performance & economy ECU

remapping.

From a fascination with natural and organic forms, the artist recognised a relationship by using shapes and textures with the use of mixed media.

Textiles, string and threads, stitches, beads and bits of driftwood and, finally, the use of ceramics helped create a new way of interpreting what she saw.

'A Creative Journey' runs until Saturday, April 11th; for further details, contact the artist on [email protected]

Running from Saturdays, April 18th, to May 23rd, the Staffordshire Moorlands Open Art Exhibition is a showcase for the often-otherwise-unseen talents of local artists.

Painters, photographers, sculptors and textile artists are all welcome to

enter their work by handing it into the Nicholson Museum and Art Gallery on Saturday, April 11th.

The Open is an enormously popular, annual event, organised as part of Leek Arts Festival; entry-forms are available from Leek Tourist Information Centre (open, Monday-Saturday [10am-4pm]), Tel: (01538) 483741, or email: [email protected]

The closing ceremony takes place on Saturday, May 23rd, and further information is available from Clare Mellor on 07814-773340.

The Museum and Art Gallery is located on Stockwell Street within the Nicholson Institute (a Grade II listed building which has been fully restored as a public centre of excellence and learning).

THE THEME FOR 2015 - 'PETS AND THE ELDERLY'FROM Wednesday, April 1st, to Monday, May 4th, you are invited to participate in National Pet Month 2015!

During this period, thousands of people from up and down the country will be celebrating life with their pet chums, spreading the word on responsible

pet-ownership or raising money for their favourite charity in fun-filled events.

Why not be a part of all this?

While many of these events WILL raise funds for local charities, National Pet Month is NOT just about fund-raising.

It is also about raising awareness of how pets make people's lives happier, and how we can repay the

creatures which we love by looking after them responsibly.

Details of how to join in and become a supporter - whether by setting up an event yourself, by entering one of the NPM competitions, or to see what's happening in your area - are on NPM's own website: www.nationalpetmonth.org.uk

Each year, the

responsible pet-ownership message is conveyed by running the events under a central theme; in 2015, it is 'Pets and the elderly: enjoying later years together'.

The mainstay of the month is a myriad of local events run across Britain, from vets' practices to pet shops, and in schools, and by charities.

NPM is a registered charity, unique in bringing together welfare charities, professional bodies, pet businesses, schools, youth groups and pet-lovers, with the common goal of improving the welfare of pets.

National Pet Month's aims are to:

* Promote responsible pet-ownership;

* Make people aware of the mutual benefits of living with pets;

* Increase public awareness of the role of pet care

specialists;

* Raise awareness of the value of working- and assistance-companion animals.

NPM's sponsors are Agria Pet Insurance and Medivet, while the National Office of Animal Health (NOAH) and Pet Food Manufacturers' Association (PFMA) are its trustees.

FRIENDLY RELIABLE SERVICE EVERYTHING YOU NEED FOR

YOUR HOME.

Excellence is Martyn's trademarkMARTYN Stanyer strongly believes in offering customers a service so excellent that it would even satisfy himself!

"I treat my customers as if they were members of my own family, and I don't stand for the 'It'll Do' attitude that is prevalent in so many trades," he told us.

Moreover, his business, MS Services, offers such a wide-ranging remit in terms of home improvement (both internal and external) that it encompasses everything from changing a washer to building a house!

M.S. Services encompasses bathrooms, bedrooms, windows, doors and loft-conversions, with exemplary kitchen and bathroom work being Martyn's particular fort'e, as he utilises his wealth of experience and expertise.

However, 2013 saw his business enhanced by moving into the gardening sphere (including,

naturally, fencing).

Unsurprisingly, MS Services enjoys an abundance of customers' recommendations!

Of course, caring genuinely about your clients has its positive aspects.

"If you treat customers well, you have them for life; they start out as a customer and end up as a friend," commented sole proprietor, Martyn, who is very flexible in his approach to clients.

"I don't give the usual, massive quotes (which are often unfairly inflated to the tune of about 20%), with the result that most established customers never ask for a price. Also, they can buy their own materials, using my own trade-discounts."

MS Services operates over a wide radius, taking in Staffordshire (including the whole of Stoke-on-Trent) and parts of neighbouring Cheshire.

IN ADDITION, MARTYN'S WEBSITE WILL SOON BE AVAILABLE!

A reliable and professional service

FOR the retail of, or expert repairs to, garage doors in Stoke-on-Trent, nobody does it better than this family-run business!

L T Garage Doors is a highly reputable garage door supplier and fitter, providing complete and comprehensive coverage throughout the whole of Staffordshire.

This business really does offer outstanding quality

workmanship and great value for both installation of, and repairs to, garage doors, meeting and exceeding all your expectations.

The well-established company boasts an extensive range of garage doors ready for supply and fitting, and can also help with the installation of fire doors for any property.

Priding itself on delivering the best products for the best value, L T Garage Doors features its own showroom (located at 1887, Leek Road, Milton), which enables readers to look and try, before purchasing.

If you are looking for garage doors or garage door spares and parts, it welcomes all enquiries, striving for complete customer satisfaction with every project undertaken.

"We have no sales, just low prices all year round," says Lee Taylor.

For further information about what the company has to offer, get in touch on 0800 756 3284 or (01782) 533552 or by emailing: [email protected]

Be thoughtful!! IF you are intending to turn your house into a supremely attractive home, it's important to

realise that it doesn't cost a fortune!Indeed, it costs no money whatsoever to rearrange the furniture, but this simple, domestic act can make a world of difference - as long as it is done thoughtfully. The key to success is thinking about how you use each piece of furniture (whether it's a small table which is used merely to display your car-keys, or a large sofa that is a favourite spot, upon which to watch television), and ensuring that it is fulfilling its purpose. But it is important not to feel inhibited about 'your space'; try mixing old and new pieces, or experimenting with striking aesthetics alongside more simple, muted features.Sorting out a jumble of clutter can make you feel more in-control of your domicile. So, remove everything from a room and, then, put it back in, omitting what you don't require ('losing' clutter will allow the remaining details to become much more important).Lighting forms the 'bones' of a room, and insufficient attention is paid to it.It can bring out different colours and textures, and can be used to create different zones within a single space (via floor- and table-lamps or pendant lights), catering for particular moods and functions.

THE beginning of 2015 saw high demand for second-hand, four-wheel-drive vehicles. The most popular model on the used car market was the VOLKSWAGEN TOUAREG, according to second-hand pricing expert, Glass's.The company monitored 300 models over four weeks in January, identifying not only the ones which sold the quickest, but also those which 'hung around' on the market.Awarded third place, the CHEVROLET ORLANDO people-carrier has never sold in high numbers in the UK (when compared to rivals, such as Ford C-Max). However, relatively-low numbers as the second-hand market, combined with excellent practicality and low prices, means that they don't 'hang around' for long! (The Orlando comes with a five-year warranty, when new; so, a new, used one will still be covered). In second place, the VAUXHALL MOKKA might not be the strongest SUV in its class, but it does offer good value. The VOLKSWAGEN TOUAREG beat rivals, such as the Audi Q7 and Range Rover, to the title of number one, fastest-selling used car in January, 2015. Said Rupert Poutin, head of valuation at Glass's: "The Volkswagen Touareg is often underrated, but offers fantastic build-quality, superb engines, great handling and subtle looks: this is the thinking man's Porsche Cayenne."

Awe-Inspiring Young MusiciansAT long last, the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain is making a much-demanded return to Stoke-on-Trent Festival 2014/5 at Hanley's Victoria Hall (as part of the Stoke-on-Trent Festival 2014/15) on Friday, April 10th.

Conducted by young, Israeli musician, Ilan Volkov, the concert commences with

'The Warriors', a rarely-heard work by the Australian composer, Percy Grainger (1882-1961).

Written during 1913-16, 'The Warriors' is, perhaps, Grainger's most ambitious work, an 18-minute, 'imaginary ballet' of frenzied, 'danceable music', involving a large, 'tuneful percussion'.

This will be followed by a new commission from Unsuk Chin (b. 1961), the multi-award-winning, South Korean composer, who is now based in Berlin, Germany, and a masterwork by Hungarian, Béla Bartók (1881-1945), his Concerto for Orchestra.

Tickets for the concert (which starts at 8pm) are priced at £15-£31, and can be purchased from Music Mania Box Office, 4-6, Piccadilly Arcade, Hanley, Stoke-on-Trent , Tel: (01782) 206000, and are also available online at www.musicmania.com

F U N E R A L S E R V I C E SOptimum advice at a time of personal griefIT is an indubitable truth that the healing process is something which each and every person in the country must experience at least once in his or her life.

For, bereavement is, quite simply, one of the great immutables in quotidian life.

It is, however, equally true that, when it impinges on our consciousness, the overwhelming majority of us are completely unprepared for the demands which it makes upon us.

It is, of course, essential that we are able to cope with the practical and emotional demands encountered at this potentially harrowing time.

The subject of death was a constant theme in conversation and thought in Victorian and Edwardian society, prior to

World War I.

But, now, in the early-21st century, it is something that is (to put it mildly) assiduously avoided.

Accordingly, when we losed a loved one (be it a partner,

relative or a very close friend), it is imperative that we acquire the support, help and care of a

reputable, well-established firm of funeral directors.

This company should possess the requisite experience of dealing with all the arrangements and, at the same time, providing optimum advice at your time of personal grief.

Its professional standards ensure that kindness, sympathy

and understanding combine to lift the inexorable burden imposed upon the bereavedas is humanly possible, providing help, comfort and support, when it is most required.

In truth, grieving is a healing process, and, whilst our sense of loss will never disappear entirely, it will diminish, as a return to normalcy (in terms of working and social life) reasserts itself.
