LHU campus, while predominantly white, does have several minorities who make up only a small fraction of the population. Black and Hispanic stu-dents are a larger percentage, but there are other ethnicities to take into consideration.

This group includes those of Asian, Native Amer-LFDQ1DWLYH+DZDLLDQ3DFLÀF,VODQGHURUPL[HGGHVFHQW,WLVDOVRQRQUHVLGHQWLDOaliens and ethnicities that aren’t standard RQDGPLVVLRQIRUPV,QWKHHGLWLRQRIWKH,QVWLWXWLRQDO5HVHDUFK5HSRUWWKLVFRPELQHGJURXSRIVWXGHQWVPDNHVXSpercent of LHU’s campus diversity, which is up IURP·VSHUFHQW

Much of the increase comes from a large intake of students who are labeled as ‘other/unknown’ ethnicity on the forms or who identify as biracial.

Some of the ethnicities listed only have a small representation on campus, like those who identify as 1DWLYH$PHULFDQRU1DWLYH+DZDLLDQ3DFLÀF,VODQG-er.

“There isn’t a great deal of diversity here but the school succeeds at offering courses that appeal to a diverse student body. The faculty allows and encour-ages demonstrations of diversity,” said Lona Middle-WRQDMXQLRUZKRLVPDMRULQJLQ(QJOLVKDQGLGHQWLÀHV

One way to encourage diversity is to encourage the students to participate as well. Many students are welcome and open to different cultures, but there are some who aren’t.

The LHU Special Education Department visited parts of the Domin-ican Republic from Jan. 6 through 16 for the sec-ond year in a row. Special education department chair Jane Penman, Ph. D., has organized the trip both years and agrees that the students took a lot from the three credit study abroad course.

“This year, I believe that the LHU students were able to make stronger connec-tions with one community, Mendoza, and more fully understand the Dominican culture,” she said.

“The trip gave all 20 LHU students hands on ex-perience teaching children, even though none of us were ÁXHQWLQ6SDQLVK:HWDXJKWat two different schools.”

At one school, we taught them English on subjects such as numbers, body parts,

even our own hometowns. The second school we orga-nized a science fair in groups of two. They learned science lessons, such as weath-er, temperature, climate change, tornadoes, etc. The children were very energetic, affectionate, and kind to us. :HHYHQSDLQWHGWZRPXUDOVnearby these schools!

:HPDQDJHGWRJLYHback to the poor commu-nities in areas such as the small town we stayed in, Mendoza, and a remote vil-lage up in a mountain, Nara-jito. In Mendoza and Nara-jito, we did a food outreach giving out bags of basic food essentials for various fami-lies. Also in Mendoza we did a Medical Outreach where the people were given free check ups and medication. The children were given dental check-ups, medicine, a toothbrush and toothpaste. :HVHUYLFHGPRUHWKDQcitizens of Mendoza with our Medical Outreach and gave away a total of more than 200 food bags.

Before we did that, we hosted a small carnival at their local playground. :HKDGÀHOGJDPHVIDFHpainting, arts and crafts, and even a clown to make balloon animals!

Later we visited a group RIVSHFLDOQHHGVDGXOWV:Hreproduced the carnival we put on for the children of Mendoza and hung out with them for an evening, danc-ing and singing as well.

Once it was time to go, many tears were shed by many of us, not wanting to leave this lovely country. The people that helped us along our journey were nothing but kind to us, and

treated us like their own. Abigail Frisch, a junior

mid-level education major, felt that same sentiment.

“From my experience in the Dominican Republic, I learned how much people should cherish one another. I learned to treat everyone like family and be there when people need help or an ear to listen,” Frisch said. “The overall trip was such an eye opening experience to the culture, lifestyle, and love that each and everyone of the Dominican people possessed. I will truly miss the beautiful people and this once in a lifetime experi-ence.”

They were so grateful to everything we gave them. Nora Simcox, a senior early childhood and special educa-tion major, experienced that ÀUVWKDQGDVZHOOZKLOHVKHwas on the trip.

´:HZHUHLQDFRXQWU\where the majority of people had practically nothing and, yet, everyone was so happy and kind and willing

to give whatever they had,” she said. “I will never forget playing baseball with the local kids across the street. :HXVHGDEURNHQEURRPstick as a bat and pieces of paper and scraps of garbage as bases. It was so simple and still the most fun I’ve ever had.”

With the Fifty Shades of Grey release this past Friday, women ev-erywhere have been in a daze over the main character, Christian Grey. 2Q-XO\WKHRIÀFLDOPRYLHtrailer was released and the excite-ment has been mounting ever since. With it’s release on Valentine’s Day weekend, there is no surprise WKDWWKLVÀOPUDNHGLQ$94.4 million, beat-ing out the previous record of Valentine’s Day.

Christian Grey, portrayed by Jamie Dornan, plays a young business mag-nate in the books and movie. Grey is the type of man that every woman wants to be with, in my opinion. Dornan ORRNVWKHSDUWDQGGHÀQLWHO\KDVladies talking about the steamy scenes in the movie.

Dakota Johnson was chosen to play the role of Anastasia Steele, who plays a college graduate who is currently writ-ing articles about the infamous Christian Grey. I believe that she was DJRRGÀWfor this role because she is portrayed in the books as someone who is innocent and sweet. Sam Taylor-Johnson,

the director of Fifty Shades of Grey helped keep these important char-acteristics of Anastasia.

Fans have expressed their disappointments in regards to some scenes from the book that were not in the movie, but despite this fact it captures the sexual essence E. L. James, author of the trilogy, was trying to get across.

People who have seen the movie already want to see it again.

Rebecca Mann said, “It was one

of the

best movies HYHUWKHH[FLWHPHQWZDVGHÀQLWHO\worth it. I am even going to see it again with friends.”

The hype of this release has GHÀQLWHO\OLYHGXSWRWKHH[SHFWD-tions of the viewers. Another mov-iegoer Meredith Fay said, “I was VNHSWLFDODERXWVHHLQJLWDWÀUVWEXWLWGHÀQLWHO\H[FHHGHGP\expectations.”

With this type of reac-tion, producers were smart to make sure this movie lived up to all of the expectations. The only thing that fans are

still waiting for after this PRYLHLVÀQGLQJRXWZKHQWKH

sequel Fifty Shades Darker will come out.

The long awaited Fifty Shades of Grey hit theaters on February WKDQGIDQVÁRFNHGWRWKHWKH-aters to see it. According to imdb, it’s currently ranked in the box RIÀFHVDWDERXWPLOOLRQ6RXQGVlike a pretty good movie then, right? I think not.

We live in a world that is currently sex-obsessed. Sex is everywhere in media at the cur-rent moment, it’s in everything we watch and everything we listen to. It’s also being heavily used to sell products. Fifty Shades of Grey only adds to this obsession.

,I,KDGWRFODVVLI\WKLVÀOPDVanything, I’d classify it as a bad porno. The idea behind the movie may be an interesting concept but it’s also morally wrong. The story is about a college senior named Anastasia Steele hooking up with a billionaire named Christian Grey. While their ages are close, the area where it’s morally wrong is the fact that it takes the idea of mix-ing business with pleasure to the extreme.

Don’t get me wrong, I like a good romance story as much as the next person but when you write about a relationship revolving around nothing but sex, it gets to be a bit much. Christian even admits to not wanting a romantic relationship with Ana! He comes up with a CONTRACT stating that fact, that whole exchange just blows my mind!!

Another thing that bugs me is that, despite the sex scenes not

even being written well and being far too extreme, people love it. And what also sickens me is the fact that people are going nuts over something which is almost as low as pornography. Almost everyone looks down on something as dirty as that so why is Fifty Shades ac-ceptable?

A major thing that bothers me as well, is I feel this book shows a weak female character. I feel like this character is extremely submis-sive and lets Christian do whatever he wants. I know that’s the whole point of the relationship but I feel it’s over the top. I feel like Chris-tian sends her a bunch of gifts and then wins her over and I’m not even fully sure Ana fully enjoys what she’s doing with Christian, it sure doesn’t seem like it. One of the scenes that really bothers me is when Ana feels her and Christian are not compatible and she’s devas-tated over it! I feel like screaming “Get over yourself woman, have some more decency then that.”

This movie (or book) treats sex like it’s nothing and it shouldn’t be like that. This shouldn’t be accept-able and to me it’s a huge embar-rassment in our society. We have to stop letting stuff like

this get pub-lished. There’s

plenty of other amaz-ing movies and books out there to choose from,

especially in the romance

category!

‘If you’re reading this it’s too late.’ That’s all the album

(or mixtape) said on the cover of Drake’s latest music that

dropped midnight randomly last Thursday. Interestingly

enough this came at a rather curious time.

With all of the drama surrounding Lil Wayne and

Cash Money this raises a lot of questions. According to

Pitchfork.com, “on a random December afternoon when

Wayne gave a curt Twitter update on his long-gestating

Tha Carter V album, blaming Birdman and Cash Money

for the holdup and demanding an exit from the label he’s

called home most of his life.

He’s since initiated an audacious $51 million lawsuit

requesting not only his own exit but that of Drake and

Nicki Minaj as well.”

This puts a whole new spin on this album. People

aren’t really sure if this whole thing is just one shot at

%LUGPDQDQGDÀQDOKXUUDK IRU'UDNHDQG&DVK0RQH\but this lawsuit is happening and that means either two

things are going to happen. Either Birdman and Lil Wayne

will come to an agreement, or Lil Wayne, Drake and Nicki

are all going to leave. This could be the start of a brand

new record label.

However, with all that being said the more important

part is the music behind the drama. I think we’re start-

ing to see the transformation of someone who isn’t going

to be making music like he previously has. While much of

sure if whether that’s a good thing or a bad thing, but you

Saturday Night Live just celebrated its 40 year anniversary this last Sunday. A few days before the historic 40th anniversary episode a digital app was launched containing 5,500 clips over the 40 seasons.

The app is interesting because it will adapt to what you want to see. It will ask you to pick favorite characters, or even your favorite time periods. After a while the app will learn what kind of comedy you want to be watching using an algorithm and will have your favorite sketches ready for you.

The app also features behind the scenes clips of hosts and cast members of the show.

The new NBC app is also trying to keep the adds down between clips. The time between ads is based on how long of clips the person watches, not by how many videos they watch. “People will get a new video ad roughly ev-ery six minutes,” said Rob Hayes executive Vice President of media at NBC. $QKHXVHU%XVKLVWKHDSSVRIÀFLDOVSRQVRU

The app also comes with a emoji keyboard where you can get emojis of your favorite SNL characters.

The SNL app is only available for iPads and iPhones in the Apple App Store at this time, but there is an Android version in the works.

If you are a Saturday Night Live fan this app is great. You can watch your favorite characters or even check out new sketches you haven’t seen. More videos will continue to be added for one great comedy experience. Be sure to check it out! Photo Courtesy of www.product-reviews.net

The Perfect Popcorn simplyrecipies.com

INGREDIENTS3 Tbsp coconut, peanut, or canola oil (high smoke point oil)1/3 cup of high quality popcorn kernels1 3-quart covered saucepan1 Tbsp or more (to taste) of butter (optional)Salt to taste

1: Heat the oil in a 3-quart saucepan on medium high heat. If you are using coconut oil, allow all of the solid oil to melt.2: Put 3 or 4 popcorn kernels into the oil and cover the pan.3: When the kernels pop, add the rest of the 1/3 cup of popcorn kernels in an even layer. Cover, remove from heat and count 30 seconds. (Count out loud; it’s IXQWRGRZLWKNLGV7KLVPHWKRGÀUVWKHDWVWKHRLOWRWKHULJKWWHPSHUDWXUHthen waiting 30 seconds brings all of the other kernels to a near-popping tem-perature so that when they are put back on the heat, they all pop at about the same time.4:Return the pan to the heat. The popcorn should begin popping soon, and all at once. Once the popping starts in earnest, gently shake the pan by moving it back and forth over the burner.Try to keep the lid slightly ajar to let the steam from the popcorn release (the popcorn will be drier and crisper).Once the popping slows to several seconds between pops, remove the pan from the heat, remove the lid, and dump the popcorn immediately into a wide bowl. With this technique, nearly all of the kernels pop, and nothing burns.5: If you are adding butter, you can easily melt it by placing the butter in the now empty, but hot pan. Note that if you let the butter get just a little bit EURZQLWZLOODGGDQHYHQPRUHLQWHQVHEXWWHU\ÁDYRUWRWKHEXWWHUDQGWR\RXUpopcorn. (Here’s more info on how to brown butter.) Just drizzle the melted but-ter over the popcorn and toss to distribute.Salt to taste.

For the past week, I’ve been drowning in a sea of

tissues and medicine cups.

I’m no stranger to sickness. Growing up

with parents who both have an autoimmune dis-

order, I thought it was normal for people to get so

sick every winter that they’d wind up bedridden or

LQWKHKRVSLWDO,P\VHOIKDGSQHXPRQLDÀYHWLPHVbefore I even turned 11.

And it didn’t stop there. I started getting

WKHÁXHYHU\ZLQWHULQPLGGOHVFKRRODQGUXQQLQJfevers so high that I hallucinated. My mom would

get up every few hours to take my temperature

and make sure I got a dose of Ibuprofen or Tylenol,

whichever’s turn it was since I needed both to keep

my fever low enough not to, well kill me, frankly.

Since I was about 14 years old, I’ve had

a better handle on my health. Mostly, at least. Be-

tween learning to change my eating and sleeping

habits and trying to manage my stress better, I’ve

been able to conquer most winters with little more

than a head cold. Still, in the last decade, a season

or two has gotten away from me. This year has been

one of those years, in a bigger way than ever before.

Given my checkered medical history, I’m

pretty used to dealing with the complications and

consequences of being sick. Not only do I know how

to keep my fever below 104 degrees, but I know how

to play catch-up with my school work.

K-12 playing make-up with school work

was simply a matter of communicating with teach-

ers—something my parents were legally tasked

with—and producing a note from a doctor. The two

elements together unlocked the gates to the king-

dom of take-home work. While my peers labored

KHDOWKLO\ XQGHU ÁXRUHVFHQW OLJKWV , ODLG RQ P\mom’s couch at home and tackled the same work,

and took home the same above-average grades as

usual.

The process isn’t so simple in college. I

now pay for every single class that I take and I’m a

JURZQDGXOW\HWVXGGHQO\IRUWKHÀUVWWLPHLQP\OLIH,·PLQDSRVLWLRQRIFDWFKLQJÁDNIRURUORVLQJDpercentage of my grade because of missing school

when I’m sick.

Don’t get me wrong; there are a lot of

professors here on campus who, formal attendance

policy or not, will be accommodating and compas-

sionate human beings if you just communicate with

them. However, there are just as many (if not more)

who seem to get some sick satisfaction from holding

fast to tyrannical tenants of attendance that leave

no room for people like me who can’t always be in

class but who could get the work done just as well

anyways with a little accommodation in the form of

some understanding.

I know there are a lot of students who

lie and take advantage of kind teachers. But in my

mind, if a student can produce adequate work and

demonstrate a working knowledge of the material

without being in class, it shouldn’t generally mat-

ter that they’re not there or why anyway (there are

exceptions, times when I think attendance is im-

perative, but that’s less often than more).

In any case, the demand for physical attendance

by professors is hurting students whose circum-

stances make a traditional educational experience

impossible. Attendance is a really important and

EHQHÀFLDOSDUWRIWKHOHDUQLQJSURFHVVEXWLW LVQ·Winherently essential.

Students shouldn’t be hindered from succeeding

and earning the same good grades as their peers

In the movie “He’s Just Not That into You,” one of the female characters

states, “A wise person once told me that if a guy wants to be with a girl, he will

make it happen, no matter what.”

This got me thinking. What I’d like to know is if this is the case then why and

how do people still choose the wrong person?

Repeatedly, year after year, we go after people who don’t actually care, peo-

ple who don’t reciprocate our love. We choose the people we think we deserve.

We choose bad people because we think we deserve bad people. We choose

people who won’t love us with the passion and desire we have for them because

we think we deserve pain.

It’s hard to believe that our friends and family members go around picking

people who treat them horribly, but this happens every day. We want so badly

to snap them back to reality and to make them see that they have so much

more going for them.

Sometimes we even want to prove to them that we are the better choice. We

have always been there and will always be there to pick up the pieces when

anything goes wrong. Through all the happy, sad and frustrating times, we are

the ones who have their backs and catch them when they fall.

Sadly, life doesn’t work this way. They probably won’t notice the person who

has been there all along because, let’s be real, this isn’t a movie. People don’t

realize what their true worth is.

However, I like to believe that this still can happen sometimes. If someone

realizes they could have better than that person gets to be so much happier

and better off. They might even start noticing good in themselves and others

that they never did before.

It doesn’t matter how long it takes a person to realize it. It only matters that

they do eventually realize the value placed on them by the people who actually

care, one hundred percent.

That’s the funny thing about us humans. We let so much hurt us that we

never stop to notice the things that, let alone the people who make us happy.

These people could make all the difference in our lives, but in the end we ac-

cept only as much love as we think we deserve.

So yes a wise person might have said that if a guy wants a girl it will happen,

but if we look around, too many people—male and female—are choosing the

wrong person, making it hard for the right one to be seen.

Forget about who you think you deserve because most likely you think you

deserve worse than you actually do. Instead, try looking at who you already

have.

Lock Haven University head football

coach John Allen announced his resigna-

tion from the position.

Allen came to LHU in March of 2011

and in his second season, 2012, he helped

the Bald Eagles snap their 52-game los-

In an article released on Lock Ha-

ven’s athletic website, Allen said, “I’m

leaving to pursue other opportunities. I

want to thank everyone at Lock Haven

University and the Lock Haven commu-

nity for their support over the past four

years.”

In his third season, Allen helped

the program eliminate some dreadful

distinctions. The team went 3-8 in 2013

which was the most wins for the team

since 2004. In week eight of that same

season, Allen led Lock Haven to a road

victory over Millersville which snapped a

30-game road losing streak which dated

back to 2007. That same season saw the

team get off to a 2-1 start, which marked

WKHÀUVWWLPHWKH\KDGEDFNWREDFNZLQVsince 2002. With their week 3 victory in

2013, Allen and his team earned three

Allen’s career record at LHU was

6-37 (.140 winning percentage).

Lock Haven has said that, “A search

committee is being assembled and a na-

tional search for LHU’s next head foot-

ball coach will begin immediately.”

There was no conversation publicly

about Allen’s resignation nor where he

intends to take his career from here. The

resignation comes as a surprise because

the team announced their summer camp

dates on LHU athletic’s website on Feb

10. In the release, it said, “The camp will

be directed by head coach John Allen.”

The Lock Haven University lacrosse team reached the Division II cham-

pionship game last season and ultimately fell short of their goal as they were

defeated 7-5 by Adelphi University, but this upcoming season brings renewed

hopes of hoisting that trophy at the end of the season.

Head Coach Kristen Selvage, the coach with the most wins in Lock Ha-

ven lacrosse history, enters her twelfth season at the helm. Her team has al-

ready received numerous preseason awards from various organizations. They

The national landscape sees the Lady Eagles ranked behind No. 1 Adelphi

night was No. 24 Dan Neff (Quarryville, Pennsyl-

vania/Solanco) and Aaron McKinney (McDonald,

Pennsylvania/Allegheny), who both scored upset-

victories.

No. 28 Fred Garcia (Donora, Pennsylvania/

Ringgold) picked up a huge win over No. 32 Clint

Morrison at 184 pounds. The win was the 99th of

Garcia’s career, as he closes in on the 100-win club.

Tyler Wood (West Chester, Pa./West Chester-

Rustin) and Phil Sprenkle (Seven Valleys, Pa./Dal-

lastown) dominated their opponents at 174 and 197,

respectively on the way to important wins tonight.

Rider rattled off three straight victories to start

the match, as the Broncs won three tightly-contest-

ed bouts at 125, 133 and 141.

Trailing Rider 9-0, Neff put Lock Haven on the

board with an upset-win over No. 19 B.J. Clagon.

From the opening whistle of the bout at 149,

Neff took it right to Clagon. Neff took him down

Following a Rider pin at 157, Lock Haven ral-

lied, rattling off four straight wins.

McKinney got the rally going at 165 with a 3-1

upset of No. 32 Conor Brennan in sudden victory.

With the match tied 1-1 after seven minutes, McK-

inney scored the only takedown of the bout in sud-

den victory for the win, which cut into Rider’s lead

at 15-6.

At 174, Wood scored a quick takedown absolute-

ly hammered Steve Nelson on top for the remainder

In a highly anticipated matchup of two nation-

ally-ranked wrestlers at 184, Garcia came out on

top, much to the delight of a boisterous home crowd.

Garcia knocked off Morrison 5-3, thanks to a third-

period takedown.

Earlier today, the NCAA released its second

edition of the Division I Coaches’ Panel Rankings

and Garcia, the lone Bald Eagle represented was

ranked No. 25.

Sprenke’s 14-1 major decision at 197 put the

Bald Eagles in the lead, 16-15. Leading 2-0 after

one period – Sprenkle started the second down and

scored a quick reversal, and racked up three more

near fall points for a 7-0 lead. Sprenkle’s dominance

OHGWRRIULGLQJWLPHAfter nine exciting bouts, the match came down

to 285 pounds and Brad Emerick (Wilkes-Barre,

Pa./Coughlin) and Greg Velasco didn’t disappoint,

as they locked up in a thrilling battle that needed

extra time. Tied 1-1 after seven minutes, the two

went to sudden victory, marking the fourth time on

the night, regulation-time wasn’t enough to decide

the outcome of a bout. During the 30-second tie-

breaker-1 period, Velasco scored a reversal and took

a 3-1 lead. Emerick earned an escape quickly dur-

ing tiebreaker-2 and made several good shots in on

Velasco, but couldn’t score and Velasco won 3-2.

Velasco’s win gave Rider the 18-16 victory.

The Bald Eagles have just two dual matches

remaining. Next Thursday (Feb. 19), LHU travels

to Bloomsburg for a 7 p.m. match, before hosting

Grand Canyon on Friday (Feb. 20) at 7 p.m.
