Life processes
Living organisms (animals and plants) have certain life processes in common. There are 7 things that they need to do to count as being alive. The phrase MRS GREN (or MRS NERG)is one way to remember them:
Movement all living things move, even plantsRespiration getting energy from foodSensitivity detecting changes in the surroundingsGrowth all living things growReproduction making more living things of the same typeExcretion getting rid of wasteNutrition taking in and using food

The life process involved in starting a new lifecycle is
reproduction
Are all life cycles the same? Why not?

1. EGG Mayflies start as eggs. These eggs stick to plants or drop to the bottom of the river.
You can see lots of eggs. Why do you think there areso many?

We are going to look at the different stages of the mayfly's life cycle:

2. NYMPH
• Mayfly eggs hatch quickly, usually from hours to weeks depending on the species. • At this point the mayfly is in its nymph stage and will spend the next year growing.
Nymphs usually cling to rocks, to avoid trout fish which will eat them.

3. EMERGER • After the nymph is fully grown, and the water temperature is just right, nymphs float or crawl to the surface where they will emerge from their nymph skin.
• It takes time for them to get used to their new wings and legs in order to escape the surface of the water.

4. DUNThe mayflies at this stage can fly to the bank of the river. They rest and shed their skin often. They are now able to reproduce.

5. SPINNERAfter a dun moults, it becomes a spinner a fully grown adult, ready to mate.
They are brighter in colour and their wings are more transparent than they were when in the dun stage. They also have longer legs, and tails.

• A spinner has one job to do. It needs to reproduce before it dies.
• Spinners will leave the ground or plants and fly to a stream, river or lake.
• Here the life cycle starts again...

Task 1:
Cut out or draw pictures of the 5 stages of the mayfly's lifecycle.
Remember it is a cycle, so you will need to place them in a circle.
