This giant cake set a new record for the world’s largest glutinous rice cake. It was made from over 1300 pounds of a special type of rice and required the work of dozens of cooks to complete. When finished, it measured almost 4 meters (12.5 feet) in diameter! Rice cakes like this one are often made with a special type of rice that has been steamed, mashed, and then toasted. The cakes not only provide energy and nutrients, but they also represent reunion and good luck. Food such as a rice cake contains matter and energy your body can use. When you eat, a series of chemical reactions help break down the food and release the energy stored in its molecules. Because different food items have different amounts of energy and nutrients, knowing the content of your food can help you make wise choices. If you wanted to know how many calories were in a food, you might look at the label on the package. But how could you find out the amount of energy in a record-breaking food like this? Predict: How might you measure the amount of energy in the world’s largest rice cake?

Surviving a Zombie Apocalypse – Food Calorimetry Lab Procedure

Before you begin the labYou will be making your own data table for this experiment. Your data table should include all the important components: Title, Date, and use a ruler so it’s neat! Your independent variable should be the first column (include units). You will need columns for all the different types of dependent data you decide to collect (remember – you want qualitative and quantitative observations!). Draw your data table in the space provided on your student worksheet.Procedure

1. Tie hair back. Hair must be up for the entire lab, because fire. Also put your goggles on. 2. Gather all materials. Assemble the set-up apparatus as shown in the picture to the right. The piece of foil + food sample should be as close to the can as possible (<5 cm) when the set-up is finalized.3. Acquire two Cheetos and measure the mass on the balance. Remember not to put the Cheeto directly on the measuring tray—use a weigh boat! 4. Measure out approximately 100.0 mL of water (measure – remember: sig figs! – And record the exact amount in your data table) in the graduated cylinder, then put the water into the soda can.5. Put your thermometer in the soda can and measure the initial temperature – and record the temperature in your data table as initial water temperature (sig figs!).6. Place the food sample onto the piece of foil. Place the sample on the table away from the calorimeter.7. Light the candle. You will be using the candle to light all of the food samples on fire for the entire lab, so keep the candle lit and someone should be in charge of watching the candle (safety rule #1 – don’t leave a flame unattended!)8. Using the candle, light the food on fire and immediately move the sample under the calorimeter. Let the sample burn itself out completely. If it goes out before the food is burnt to a black crisp, relight it immediately . 9. While the food is burning, measure the temperature of the water every 1 minute. Start timing as soon as you put the food under the can.

10. Repeat procedure using Kix instead of Cheetos. For the Kix, make sure to get approximately the same mass as the Cheetos. Make sure to replace the water in the can! 11. Calculate the average temperature change of the water for each trial (highest temperature minus starting temperature divided by time the food burned). Put this in the data table on question 2. Put the average temperature change on the whiteboard in the class data table.12. After all 8 groups have posted their data, calculate the average temperature change for each food. Record this in the data table in question 2. 13. Make sure to follow the cleanup instructions posted to get the clean-up stamp!
