Library Research• Why do you need a librarian?!
• Because finding quality information online (for free) is hard!
• I’ll show you how to find great stuff – saving time & money
• I’ve created four tasks for you to simulate the kind of online research you’ll need to do for MATC 716 – and beyond
• Please review the slides and complete these four tasks before the Aug. 16 library session

Where Do I Search?• Wherever you want! … but end up at

If you need to find articles on a specific subject, meet with Stephanie so she can show you some tricks in using the search tools.
Even if you think you know what you’re doing (like I did), I guarantee she will show you tools you didn’t know of and help you find relevant articles that you were unable to find.
You can reserve books through the UNC library website and have them held and reserved for you at the Park Library [or mailed to you at home!].
I was able to find some of our course books that way and saved myself some time and money.

Search Scenario, Part 1• Your class client is the town of Carrboro, N.C., and their communications
coordinator is developing best practices for social media use during natural disasters. Your advisor suggested you read the following: 1. Yates, D., & Paquette, S. (2011). “Emergency Knowledge Management and Social
Media Technologies: A Case Study of the 2010 Haitian Earthquake.” International Journal of Information Management, 31(1), 6-13.
2. Towards a Networked Crisis Communication Theory: Analyzing the Effects of (Social) Media, Media Credibility, Crisis Type and Emotions. (2012). Conference Papers -- International Communication Association, 1-27.
3. Crowe, A. (2011). “The Social Media Manifesto: A Comprehensive Review of the Impact of Social Media on Emergency Management.” Journal of Business Continuity & Emergency Planning, 5(1), 409-420.
• Find the full-text of the above articles – quickly, because you need to read them before tomorrow. Note: The town of Carrboro has no funds for purchasing these, so you must find the articles at no cost to you.
Take Notes!Make a checkmark when you find the full-text of these articles. If you have any difficulties, note them too!

Library Hacks Videos• Go to http://guides.lib.unc.edu/matc716/orientation• Watch Library Hacks Videos 1-4 & 6
Search Scenario, Part 2• Using what you learned from the Library Hacks videos,
develop a search strategy to find more articles on this topic.
• You will need to access EBSCO -• Jot down answers to these questions:
• What are some words you would use to find articles?• How would you “truncate” those terms? (Library Hack #1)• Find at least one scholarly article and one trade article.
(Library Hack #2)• Create an account in EBSCO (Library Hack #3)• Reformat the articles you’ve found in APA format (Library Hack #4)• If the full-text article isn't available through EBSCO, how would you
access it? (Library Hack #6)• If you didn't find all of the articles in Search Scenario 1, you may
want to revisit them after watching the Library Hacks videos.
Take Notes!Do take notes -- we will review your experiences in the two scenarios in our session on August 16.I guarantee that you will not remember what you’ve done without notes!

Why chat now?• If you chat now, you’ll know how to do it later …
when you need a quick answer to a library question.
• You’ll see how quick & efficient it is for synchronous help when you need it.
