    Dear Teacher,

It is our aim that with this English Guide III, the learning experience will be an

enjoyable and rewarding one both for you and your students. In the present curriculum,

your role is to guide and facilitate learners to become more independent, and to gain the

ability to reflect and construct knowledge, not only to become competent in English, but

    also competent learners.

English Guide III adopts the principles of experiential learning and which students are

exposed to real life texts and communication and have opportunities to analyze and make

sense of them, with the guidance and direction of their teacher.

We recommend that if you dont have enough time to finish the exercises in class, ask

your students to do them at home. Follow these tips:

Variety: Change games and activities regularly.

Repeat and check: Check the content as a regular feedback. Do it at the beginning and

at the end of your class.

Never: Tell students that they have failed or that they are the worst students you have

    ever taught to.

Elaborate: your own material, include puppets, drawings, bingoes, pictionaries,

magazines, etc. Surprise your students taking an odd object or an amazing activity that

    could raise curiosity among them.

Avoid: The abuse of abstract concepts, they can be confusing. Use simple things

according to the level of students.

Reaffirm: PLEASE and THANK YOU at any moment. Be positive and polite to your class,

a friendly atmosphere between teachers students is the more adequate for learning to

    take place.

Involve: Always shy students in activities and games.

When you are writing on the whiteboard keep eye contact and talking with your students.

    Dear Student

    Welcome to English!

With English Guide III you will continue to learn to use English in a variety of

situations with native and non-native speakers and participate in social practices of

language. For example, you will be able to talk about your holidays plans, etc.

In the Self evaluation section you have opportunities to evaluate how are you doing and

    when you need more practice.

The verb lists at the end of the book will help you in grammar exercises.

Do yourown pictionary. Use it to learn and record new vocabulary and learn new ways

to remember it. In this part you will write all the words that you want to learn with your own

    definition to each one.

Collect the written work you do during the semester. Use this material to reflect on your

    progress and improve your work.

It is important to practice English outside of the classroom. Chat in English with people

from other countries, watch TV, listen to music and read lyrics or read stories in English

that you really like and enjoy.

    SELF- EVALUATION

THINK ABOUT ALL THE THINGS YOU LEARNED TO DO INENGLISH IN THIS UNIT .

This exercise will give you practice in working with verbtenses: changing the past forms of verbs to the future tense.

The following paragraph is a fanciful account of a student's visit to

Buckingham Palace to visit the Queen of England. Rewrite the paragraph as if

these imaginary incidents from the past will instead occur sometime in the

future. In other words, change the form of each main verb from the past tense to

the future tense (willplus the present form of the verb).

    Example:

Original: I traveled to London to visit the Queen of England.

Recast:I will travel to London to visit the Queen of England.

    Visiting Her Majesty

I traveled to London to visit the Queen of England. Being a clever fellow,

I disguised myself as a prince and walked into Buckingham Palace as if I owned

it. After receiving directions from the chambermaid, I stepped into the Queen's

bedroom and surprised Her Royal Highness with a hearty slap on the back.

Then, of course, I tipped my hat, bowed, and delivered the usual compliments.

After uncorking a bottle of champagne, we exchanged pleasantries and talked

about our families for over an hour. I showed her my photograph album and my

stamp collection, and she showed me hers. After a thoroughly entertaining visit,

I traded addresses with Her Majesty and then kissed her goodbye--on thefingertips of her white gloves, of course.

If I Were A Boy lyrics (Beyonce)

If I were a boy even just for a day

I'd roll out of bed in the morning

And throw on what I wanted

And go drink beer with the guys

    .

    And chase after girls

And I'd never get confronted for it

When you lose the one you wanted

'Cause he's taking you for granted

And everything you had got destroyed

    If I were a boy

I would turn off my phone

    Tell everyone it's broken

So they'd think that I was sleeping alone

LESSON PLAN (IF I WERE A BOYBEYONCE)

    STAGE ONE warmer: guessing game

Set this up by telling students that you are thinking of a celebrity. They have toask yes or no questions to guess who it is. Split them up into teams if you want.Correct any errors with question formation, etc. (The answer, of course, isBeyonce.) Keep this nice and short.

    STAGE TWO- song

Photocopy the worksheet of the song and cut it in to pieces. The day of this

lesson ask your Ss to be in teams of 3 or 4. You will need to give each team anenvelope with the song into pieces. Play the song If I were a boy and ask Ssto arrange the song in correct order. If they are having problems you shouldstop the song more often. You need to check which teams have the completesong. Ask Ss to return the envelopes with the lyrics on in order to do the nextactivity.

    STAGE THREE Song

    1. Ask Ss if theyve seen the video for If I Were a Boy (They probably have.) Ifthey have mostly, ask them these questions. And if they mostly havent, give

them as gist questions on the board or dictated. What is Beyonces job in thevideo? What is her boyfriends job in the video? Where do they see eachother? What do they argue about in the middle of the video? Play the video.(Answers: 1 and 2 are meant to get at the fact that Beyonce is just imaginingbeing in her boyfriends position. 3. In a bar. 4. One of them is jealous of theothers co-worker.)

    2. After answering the first questions, give Ss page 2 (with the lyrics), and theyfill in the gaps.

    3. Afterwards, with the whole class, answer the Vocabulary questions.

    STAGE FOUR Writing

    1. Write If I Were a Boy and If I Were a Girl on the board. Tell the Ss theyare going to write a poem similar to the song by Beyonce. Obviously, boys willwrite If I Were a Girl and girls, vice versa. You may or may not want to use thetemplate from the handout. It depends on how familiar the students are withthe form (If + past simp., would + inf.).

Ss write the poems and compare in pairs. (If your kids are lazy and needmotivation, tell them youll be taking it up for a grade, and theyll probably hop toit.)

    65

    2. In feedback, ask one of each pair to explain what their partner would do if heor she were a girl or boy, as the case may be.

If time doesnt allow, you can end by brainstorming differences about boys andgirls or whatever and give them the poem to write as homework.

Voila. Of course, this sequence could be broken into two chunks, to be done inconsecutive sessions, the interview portion in one class and the song in thenext.

The If I Were a template can be used for lots of other things (animals, jobs, etc.)
