    About Lice infection andlice

    Lice infection is a menace Nits are lice eggs, nymphs are baby lice, and lice are the

    adults. It can take up to 7 days for your child to start scratching

    They cannot live for longer then 24 hours without humanblood, but can live for up to 3 weeks with it.

    They are about 2 mm in length. (adults), grey or brownishgrey in color, and have 6 legs

    Females lay about 5-6 eggs a day

    Etiology

    Lice are a tiny wingless parasitic insectsThey do not release a toxin or poison, but they

    bite the scalp which infest the skin, andcauses irritations.

    Causes lichenification (thickened skin),Lymphomas( round or oval lumps underskin), or Lymphangioma (raised yellow-tan orred mark)

    They cause your scalp to become itchy and

    inflamed. If scratching continues it can leadto skin irritations and infections.

    Mode of Transmissons

    Lice is transmitted from other humans or from sharingthings such as pillows and brushes with otherpeople

    Humans are also known as Homo sapiens.

    Its transmitted by : -Person-to-person contact - Wearing infested clothing -Using an infested brush - Lying on a bed, pillow, stuffed animal that has

    been infested

    Symptoms

    The most common symptom for lice infection isitching of the scalp

    Children may also complain about somethingmoving or tickling their head

    Sometimes people develop a rash at the backof their neck

    You may also notice droppings of nits on pillowsor sheets

    Preventions

    Inform people about lice infection Avoid direct contact with people that have

    it, or may have it Watch for signs that someone may have itTeach your children not to share things

    such as pillows, combs, brushes, etc.. Make sure your childs school has

    separate cubbies Do weekly lice checks, especially if you

    have children in school

    Treatments

    Involves treating the person with it, family, andthe household

    Individual with it & family : - Use lice shampoo is recommended. - Natural treatments: mayonnaise, various oils,

    petroleum jelly, or peanut butter. Though thesemight not be as effective

    Household : - Wash all clothing and bed linens, using hot

    water. -Put all things that cannot be washed in plastic

    bags for 2 weeks -Soak or wash all hair brushes -Vaccum
