Sister Doctor Maeve Louise Heaney VDMF kept the audi-ence spell bound with her charismatic presentation of thought provok-ing quotes and

her insights on “What kind of beauty will save the world?” ……….. Is Music, Art and Beauty the answer to this modern world? Her finishing address was in Song. "Two trumpets sound in a different way, but one and the same Spirit blows air through them. The first says: Beautiful, the most beautiful of the children of man; and the second, with Isaiah, says: \We have seen him: he had no beauty, no dignity..." St. Augustine Beauty is the last thing which the thinking intellect dares to approach, as only it dances as an uncontained splendour around the double constellation of the true and the good [...] Beauty' is the disinterested one, without which the ancient world refused to understand itself, a word which both imperceptibly and yet unmistakably has bid farewell to our new world, a world of interests, leaving it to its own avarice and sadness. Fr. Philip Marshall, Vicar General South Australia opening address;

(representing Archbishop Wilson - Grand Prior South Australia)

We are all made for love, in the image of God

The Mystical Body of Christ –for the Order note:

be open to the liberating power of love

not just friends

longing desire for love – witness it

Hope, witness to the power of conviction

Witness in your own place.

Cardinal Edwin O’Brien, Grand Master

Noted the importance of Paul Bartley joining the grand Magisterium

Expansion through the Pacific as Spiritual Renewal

Consider the Order: History, present status, future

Cardinal reported on his address to Sydney business community. Subject covered the 8 day Conclave of bishops called by

Pope Francis. The bishops are debating the state of their dioceses

Pope Francis was not in the top 20 when he was chosen after 8 days of voting (short historically). He is the man the Church

needs – we are about to enter the Year of Mercy

Six characteristics of Pope Francis –

Three Personal:

Simplicity: He lives simply. Examination of conscience for all, but simply.

Spontaneity: Speaks his mind/not everything is infallible/often departs from scripture,

makes him a great communicator. It is our responsibility to keep up to date,

to ponder what it means

Solidarity: Feels everything – “pray for me a sinner”/solidarity with sinners – lift their burden

Three Professional:

Synod-ality: This Synod of 3 weeks is the longest in history. Church is alive not moribund

Subsidiarity: 20 years between Synods with all decisions from Rome. Now some decentralisation and simplification

e.g. on annulments (the Eastern Orthodox have more frequent Synods)

Symphony: Bringing the best ideas together e.g. spotlight on child trafficking and on Terrorism. Reaching out to

anyone who can help terrorism.

The True History of the Order

Thanks you to all,

I would like to talk about the Church history about the Order; it is not easy to summarise the true history of the order.

We could always find new documents to add to the research.

Two main reasons for un-reliability of what has been accepted to date:

Relying on early writings from the 17th Century – they may be based on some false documents from the early church

history. Many books are based on this source.

Confusion –“Order of the Holy Sepulchre” vs “Knightly Order of the Holy Sepulchre”. Some decisions of the Pope re-

ferred to only the Canons of the Holy Sepulchre. So the question remains who are the Canons of the Holy Sepulchre.

When was the Order ACTUALLY founded?

We know that the 1st Crusade resulted in the appointment of a Latin Patriarch with a Chapter of Canons around 1114. These

Canons had no military function; they were exclusively religious. The first “True” document is from 1336. After the fall of

Acre in 1291 there were gentry (who were already Nobles in Europe, “Medieval Knights”) who came for Investiture and took

the title of ‘Knights of the Holy Sepulchre’.

Ferara in 1414, in Italy describes knights “who had never worn spurs” but had them “in memory of his pilgrimage to Jerusa-

lem”

The first Franciscans appeared in the Holy Land in 1333. The Custos of Jerusalem celebrated a ceremony. He did not play any

other role. He was not a Knight or a member of a Knightly Order. There was not yet an Order.

The 16th Century saw developments:

Candidates from all over the Western countries and in 1656 it was also awarded to 6 candidates from the West Indies.

The investiture is no longer the highlight of pilgrimage as many candidates had a third person (proxy) represent them

at the ceremony.

Participants are no longer title of nobility, but cannot practise manual art, but be Doctors and Lawyers.

The new knights must pay an offering in cash and in the 16th Century it was a larger amount of money. But in most

cases it stated that some candidates did not pay these were not Noblemen.

Investiture was granted to Clergy as well as Laity in the 16th Century.

In 1848 the Holy See re-established the Latin Patriarchy of Jerusalem (LPJ) (after discussions with the Turkish Empire). The

authority to invest was transferred from the Custos to The Latin Patriarch. The first LPJ was an Italian, Mons. Valerga, he

asked the Pope for the Order to fund the patriarchy. The institution was in decay, just conferring a decoration. This was ob-

tained with ease. Pius IX did not accept to be the Leader. In 1868 he approved statutes for the Order. The dues should be

used for the Holy places and the order would defence of the rights of the Church in the Holy land. The LPJ given right of In-

vestiture on behalf of the Grand Master.

Page 6: Lieutenancy of Queensland Jerusalem Day, Investitures ... · In 1848 the Holy See re-established the Latin Patriarchy of Jerusalem (LPJ) (after discussions with the Turkish Empire)

6

Minutes of the Regional Consulta in Adelaide

The subsequent path of the Order:

In 1907 becomes a Papal Order, with Pius X as Grand Master

In 1911 the first modern statutes appeared – Chapters give way to Lieutenancies

In 1949 the Pope delegates Grand Master role was installed to a Cardinal

In 1966 a Consulta brought the 11 Lieutenancies together

The development of the order from 11 to 64 Lieutenancies

Today we have 64 Lieutenancies and Magisterial Delegations

In summarising this history we can see:

There is no connection to the Crusades, rather the roots of the Order are in Medieval Chivalry

The Franciscans were active from 1333 onward, but not yet an Order

The concept of the Order developed from 1833 and was constituted in 1868 when it acquired the name we use

today

The Order is a Pontifical Institution as we are today

The Cape that is worn by our Order is not a Crusade item, it is a Knightly item

The Order as it is Today and the New Constitution

The project of the new Constitution

The Order is a hierarchical organisation.

Grand Master (GM) this position is held by clergy

Governor General (GG) this position is held by layman

Grand Prior (GP) The Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem

Grand Magisterium advisory, GM makes decisions

The Assessor Archbishop Franco, was previously the Nuncio to Israel

Consulta is held at 5 year intervals, not a decision making meeting

Lieutenancies there are 66 Lieutenancies and 8 Magisterial Delegations

The Order has grown from 1996 – 26,692 members to 2013 – 28,291 members

The USA has shown strong growth and more than 50% of membership now in USA

Overall growth has been by geographical expansion rather than by growth in numbers within existing lieutenancies. Geo-

graphical growth cited for Brazil, Venezuela, Russia, Latvia, Guam, New Zealand. Future growth is targeted from India and

Iceland.

Particular problems e.g. South Africa, in 1993 started with 4 members now 31.

Vectors for Growth:

Active Lieutenant

Support of the Bishop/Active Grand Prior

(In Sardinia all the bishops are members of the Order)

Good external communications

Fund raising drives

Overcoming high age profile (many lieutenancies just replacing deaths of membership)

The new constitution – was discussed at last Consulta:

Rules need to be stated

Review with the Canon Law some actions predate current constitution of 1984

Necessity of closer co-operation with the local Church

Organisational Matters,

The situation in the Holy Land;

Intifada means “to throw off”. An insurgence against the State.

The first Intifada between 1987 - 1993 had positive result. It achieved the two-state principle with East Jerusalem

(older part) as capital of Palestine

The second Intifada between 2000 - 2005 gave a negative result. It hardened Israel policy against the two-state

solution.

Many believed that another Intifada would occur during the two wars in Gaza during 2009, and last year in 2014

(the last war lasted 61 days of bombing) but no Intifada occurred.

What moves the masses in the last days is an underlying problem of current unrest is access to Al Aqsa Mosque.

Israeli Govt using force to increase access of Jews and limiting access to Muslims.

Leader of Hamas is urging for third Intifada to eliminate Israel. Reaction especially in East Jerusalem.

Christians are also under attack by Jewish extremists. On 14th June 2015, a second fire-bombing attack on the

Tagbatha holy place.

Pressure on West Bank Christians from the wall expansion and illegal settlement building on West Bank and confis-

cation of Christian property and homes.

The action of IS in Syria and Iraq causing a refugee problem for Jordan and the Catholic Church must face this issue.

Jordan which only has a population of 4 million must deal with over 1.5 million refugees. A small percentage of

these refugees are Christians but the Church must help them all.

Israel has stated that only a true Jewish state can fully protect the Holy Land and Places.

Peace will not come soon to the region.

Review the Trend of Donations.

Expenditures:

The LPJ gets a monthly Cheque of USD 550,000 for administration expenses, for three major expenses which in-

cludes the institutions fees, schools fees and seminary fees, i.e. USD 6.6 million pa.

The LPJ ‘Hebrew speaking Catholic Vicarey’ in Israel get an additional Euro 100,000 monthly for small number of

converted Jews which attend the Vicarey to celebrate catholic mass in Hebrew. (Immigrants from India and Philip-

pines is high, over 3000 catholic Indians are now in Israel which are Hebrew speaking.)

Specific projects get funding after site visits and assessment and setting of priorities. Payments are progressive. In

2015 Euro 1.5 million has been approved, the priorities are sent by the LPJ.

The Order covers 90% of institutes cost of the LPJ budget.

Only last year the order covered 100% of the seminary cost.

The Order covers 87% of the LPJ school costs.

Partial support is given to the ‘Congregation for the Oriental Churches’.

Examples of project support for ‘Congregation for the Oriental Churches’;

Support for churches in Eastern Europe and India

Daughters of Charity Hospital in Nazareth

Melkite (Eastern Church) in Israel

Greek Melkite projects

Since 2009 projects in Egypt (previously Holy See)

Maronite projects in Cyprus

We exclude Lebanon as we have no direct knowledge (Holy See)

Italian hospital in Jordan, helping poor no fee paying people

Lieutenancies have the ability to view the Order webpage with a special log on and password to see all special projects,

then the Lieutenancies can add funds to the project of choice

Other costs met:

Medical Insurance for LPJ

Aid for refugees

Gaza emergency fund of USD 1.0 million (not yet all spent because of customs restrictions on entry of goods)

Support for Bethlehem University (run by Christian Brothers Schools). Two thirds of students are girls. Sixty percent

of students are Muslims. It is hoped to engender in them Christian virtues of peace, justice and forgiveness. The

future leaders are formed in our university.

Note: Madaba University debt of USD 100 million is no longer serviced by the Order this is now the responsibility of the

Vatican.

Trend in Donations

Year Euro millions Comment

Minutes of the Regional Consulta in Adelaide

Sunday 18 October 2015 Morning Session

Cav Prof Agostino Borromeo, Governor General –

Hotel Columbus Hotel Columbus is the only property owned by the Order. In 2002 the contract with the current tenants was not renewed,

the contract should have ended in 2007. The Italian law tends to protect the rights of the tenants so after seven years of

court action the final hearing was won by the Order. The next step is to remove the tenants and then the Hotel will be fully

returned to the Order. The Hotel will then undergo two years of refurbishment after which negotiations with the new ten-

ants will be finished. When the refurbishments are completed the Hotel will operate profitably and pay for the annual cost

of the Grand Magisterium. All remaining funds will be sent to the Holy land.

Cav Prof Agostino Borromeo, Governor General –

Madaba University The Madaba University was built by LPJ and now has a capital debt of USD 106 million. University is built on Islamic land and

it cannot be sold. The debt has been taken over by Holy See with an initial USD 50 million loan. Some 1600 students attend

the university. The breakeven point is 3000 students which will allow servicing of debt. The Order will continue to assist

with operating costs via a Foundation. Already a Foundation has been established as a shareholding company. The Founda-

tion Board will now operate and control the University under strict rules. It is expected that ultimately the University will be

making a profit. The Madaba University is already known as the Vatican University. In Jordan you cannot have a Catholic

University only a non-Islamic University.

Emeritus Bishop Benjamin, who served as the fourth bish-op of Townsville between 1984 and 2000, is mourned by Catholics in the northern Queensland diocese as a “leader before his times.”

Townsville diocesan administrator Fr Mick Lowcock de-scribed Bishop Benjamin as a “real pastor” of Townsville.

“Many saw him as a wise and loving bishop,” Fr Lowcock said.

"He was a good preacher, a great story teller and loved Townsville after coming from Rockhampton Diocese where he served in many country parishes – Mount Morgan, Tambo, Yeppoon.”

Born in Rockhampton in 1925, he entered the seminary in Brisbane and was ordained on July 25, 1949, by Bp Andrew Tynan of Rockhampton.

He served in parishes in the Rockhampton diocese for 34 years before his Episcopal ordination on May 9, 1984.

Bp Benjamin is survived by one brother.

He was known for his love of family and travelling overseas for weddings and other reunions.
