In this lesson, you will discover:

1. Some of the animals found in a coral reef ecosystem.

2. The difference between carnivores, herbivores, omnivores, detritivores, decomposers, scavengers, and predator/prey.

Predators Prey

eat other animals (prey). are eaten by predators.

Sharks Rays Eels

Shrimp Squid Octopus

Eat animals such as

Carnivores such as:

Hawaiian Lionfish Long-nosed Butterfly Fish

White Tipped Shark

Eat other

animals.

Herbivores such as:

Surgeon Fish Sea Urchins

Eat only plants

Omnivores such as:

Eat both plants and

other animals.

Blennies Crabs

Butterfly Fish

Scavengers such as:

Sharks (also carnivores) Crabs (also omnivores)

Decorator Crab

Feed on dead organisms

(but not waste products).

Detritivores such as:

Brittle Starfish Sea Cucumbers

Shrimp

Eat parts of dead organisms

and waste products.

Decomposers such as:

- are organisms that return

nutrients into ecological cycles

by breaking down dead

organic material. Bacteria

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Decomposers take all the material that is left over or further broken down by the detritivores and scavengers, as well as waste, and convert it to forms that are usable for algae to grow.

All of these organisms are interconnected in the

Food Chain?

Food chains demonstrate how animals & plants are related by the foods they eat.

Presenter
Presentation Notes
A food chain shows how each living thing gets its food. Some animals eat plants (herbivores), and some animals eat other animals (carnivores) others eat both (Omnivores). For example, a simple food chain links the phytoplankton, zooplankton, small fish, and then big fish. Food chains are linear.

Living Things Have Various Roles

These roles can be best defined in a food web.

Primary Producers

Primary Consumers

Secondary Consumers

Tertiary Consumers

Decomposers

Presenter
Presentation Notes
All organisms in the ocean are interconnected either through a simple food chain, or a more complex food web. Food webs show how each organism requires the other in order to survive in an environment.
