Life in Faith Faith Immanuel Presbyterian Church is a welcoming community

committed to worshipping God,

growing in Christ, and, emboldened by the Holy Spirit,

extending Christ’s love, grace and mercy to all.

“He has told you, O mortal, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but

to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?”

-Micah 6:8

As we enter a busy month for Faith Immanuel, we also face a chaotic and

wearisome time in our national and civic life. If you are feeling disillusioned,

weary and frustrated with the social and political landscape lately, know that

you are not alone.

It is my hope that our shared life of faith here at Faith Immanuel will provide

not only a sanctuary for you in these times, but also a guiding light as we bear

witness to the truth revealed in Christ Jesus. In a world where we are con-

stantly bombarded by advertisements and rhetoric, the words of our Scrip-

tures are often shockingly relevant, and provide a word of truth that is both

rare and refreshing.

For this reason, I would very much like to start a mid-week Bible study that will take a look at the sermon text for the upcoming week. This study will give

everyone who attends an opportunity to spend some time wrestling with, and

questioning, wondering and discussing the text before Sunday’s worship

service.

When we study the depth and meaning of these ancient stories, it is not just

an academic exercise, but a spiritual practice that gives us the tools we need

to live out our faith in a chaotic world. When we ground our understanding in

our commitment to do justice, love kindness and walk humbly with God we

may find both comfort, and the empowerment we need to advocate for the

vulnerable, care for the hurting, and ensure the dignity of all God’s creatures.

I invite you to join me for study and discussion Mondays at 3:00 pm beginning

on October 15!

Yours in Christ,

Rev. Allison Spooner

MUSIC NOTES Caleb Flick

Fall is here, and with it comes a number of events in the life of the church. I

would like to take a moment to share a few reflections on working at my last call

as Organist and Music Director which lasted from March 2012 until I came to

Faith Church in April 2013. The fall and winter before I started, the congregation went through a series of

events which culminated with the complete overturn of their staff and significant

portion of their congregation leaving right before Christmas. To say they needed

some help was an understatement. Fortunately an interim pastor was called who

had an extensive independent coaching practice researching church growth,

development, and visioning. Over the next ten months, before he accepted a call

closer to his family in Connecticut, he guided the congregation through a series

of exercises which restored their sense of purpose, and provided them with the

necessary tools to guide themselves forward. A few years later, while traveling in

New England, I visited the church this Pastor had served continuously for three years, and loved what I saw: a vibrant little community of faith where each per-

son was fully engaged and understood what it meant to be a Christian in that

time and place. While we are certainly in a much better position than my last parish, we too

have an exciting opportunity to engage with Paul Nickerson and his training and

coaching opportunities at the start of October. I cannot underscore enough the

importance of this sort of work for churches in the 21st Century. Later in the month, Consecration Sunday events will be held on October 21.

This will include opportunities in worship to make financial pledges for 2019, to

enjoy fellowship and a good meal, and to attend a concert with the Vintage Brass

at 4 pm. It is a little hard to believe that this is our SIXTH annual concert with the Vintage

Brass. Each of the last five had it’s own unique flavor, and while I will not go so

far as to label any one the “best” this one certainly has the most musicians in-

volved! Clarinetist Steve Christ, making his first Consecration Day appearance,

soprano Tammy Black, returning for the fifth year in a row, and a trio of pianist:

Wanda Beaver, Barb Buckingham, and me in a variety of combinations with Brass

and Timpani. The “big” work this year is Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue which

featured prominently in Fantasia 2000 and Pops Concerts across the world. Each

piece should be well known as this shapes up to be a celebration of “American

Classics” I look forward to seeing you then! Caleb

The leaves are falling down

Some are red and some are brown

The leaves are falling down

They tickle your nose and touch your toes

As we fall into the season of changing colors, pumpkins and spooky good

times, our students have found that learning is engaging and fun at North-

wood. Our students showed off their beautiful smiles for Northwood’s fall

picture day, capturing their early days of preschool.

Northwood is busy preparing a full fall curriculum and schedule of special

events for our students. On October 19th, students and parent volunteers

will participate in our annual fall festival. We will be decorating pumpkins,

boo-tifying cookies, playing games, having faces painted and so much more!

Our students will perform some spooky-fun songs for their parents and

parade in their Halloween costumes before trunk-or-treating around the

parking lot. Our parents always do a wonderful job of decorating their cars

for a unique experience for our students.

We will close our month with a visit to the Linglestown Fire Station. Real,

live firemen show our students their emergency vehicles and even allow

them to sit in their seats! We will continue to learn about fire prevention

and education in classes so that our students know how to stay safe.

Northwood would like to thank Faith Immanuel for all its continued sup-

port for Northwood!
