Where were you and what were you doing on April 1, 1985? Maybe you weren’t even born yet! But on that day Human Life Services arrived on the scene here in York, and LIFE has never been the same!

I’ve begun to look back over 30 years of history by reading our past newsletters, and I’m struck by how God has been faithfully working and blessing the ministry—sometimes in seemingly insignificant ways, and sometimes in astounding ways.

One such time in our history was in 1995 when Hillcrest Abortion Clinic went out of business here in York and Susan Lias, the Executive Director at

that time, followed God’s leading to raise the money to purchase the very building that Hillcrest vacated! As supporters sent their contributions toward the “Hillcrest for Life” capital campaign back in the mid-90s, they also included their comments. Here are just a few of the notes we received:

• My first grandchild was lost at Hillcrest. I pray this will help turn it around.

• God truly answers prayer. I protested at Hillcrest, and much, much prayer was given to God to stop the destruction …. Now I know God heard.

• One day I came to picket and we assembled to pray …. One person prayed that Hillcrest would cease to perform abortions and would instead house a center for those desiring to give their babies life! The first came to pass; what remains is now the second.

• It is my prayer that enough money will be raised to purchase this building and perhaps reverse what took place in the premises. I think that God is smiling on this project. The building will be yours and many women will be blessed!

What a blessing to see how many prayers have been answered over the years! You are such a treasured part of the story that God continues to write here at HLS! We deeply appreciate your prayers, your encouragement, and your generous support that have enabled us to continue reaching out to thousands of women through the years. Thank you for standing with us! We look forward to the great things God will do in hearts and lives over the next 30 years!

Thanks to an overwhelming response from you, our supporters, we were able to purchase our new ultrasound machine! Take a look at these pictures of images from our old machine versus the new unit. WOW, what a difference!

Human Life Services donated the old ultrasound machine to Dr. Gracia Etienne who will take it to Haiti for use in medical missions.

A unique volunteer opportunity arose last fall when HLS needed a pregnant woman to model the new ultrasound machine we desired to purchase. Amanda and Cody graciously agreed to let us scan their baby in the womb at our fundraising banquet. Since that time, not only has the ultrasound machine arrived but so has their baby: sweet Jacob!

We know all too well here at Human Life Services that life doesn’t always go as smoothly as planned. In 1990, the Palmer family hit one of those unexpected bumps in the road when their 16-year-old daughter, Angela, became pregnant. Angela’s father, Tim Palmer, wrote to us and recalls their experience.

“We brought my daughter to Human Life Services because she was pregnant and we were against abortion. We were looking for guidance and moral support. Angela always felt that she was treated with respect and was never put down or made to feel disappointed in herself. She feels they did their best to give her the tools for her changing future and set her up for success in taking care of herself and the baby.

“I just wanted to share a picture with you of the many blessings that have come from making theright decision. The four-generation picture is my wife and me, my daughter, my granddaughterand my great-grandson. Children are a blessing from God no matter how they are given to us.”

Angela’s decision to carry her baby to term and raise this child will affect generations to come!Thank you, Palmer family, for sharing your story with us!

“One generation shall praise Your works to another, and shall declare Your mighty acts.”Psalm 145:4

I remember sitting across the room from her; she had tears in her eyes as she said, “I just don’t think I can do this. My parents are going to freak!” “He — the father of the baby — wants me to get rid of it.” Our conversations went in circles. “What about adoption? No, I couldn’t do that. If the heart is beating, I don’t think I can abort. His Dad can never find out! I can’t do this!” I quietly turned to her friend and asked, “What do you think she should do?” Her friend said, “She needs to keep it.” More tears flowed from Qina’s eyes. “Why do you think she should

keep it?” I asked. Her friend said, “Because she’s strong. She can do this!” In 30 years, HLS has seen many strong women walk through our doors. Sometimes though, their strength is just not enough. However, we know One whose strength defies our imaginations! He works miracles every day in strong women’s hearts!

This week, one year and five months later, I caught a glimpse of a picture … It was a random picture that belonged to someone else and under other circumstances I would never have seen, but it was her, Qina and her little baby! I stared long at the picture, seeing her smile as she kissed her little girl. What a precious sight!! My heart danced with joy as it celebrated this life! I can’t wait to see what God will do in the next 30 years!
