Greetings to you all in this New Year of 2019! If you are like me, you had just begun to consistently note “2018” (as opposed to 2017!) on documents requiring a verification of date, and now we must begin to retrain ourselves all over again. Our percep-tion of time’s passage is an intriguing thing. With ever increasing frequency, I recall a celebration, a crisis, or some other experi-ence thinking that it occurred just a short while ago, only to dis-cover that many months – or even a decade– have actually transpired. Perhaps we are perceiving the reality of what Ein-stein postulated in his theory of relativity! The Bible speaks to the relentless nature of time and of the importance of spending our allotment of time wisely. In Ephe-sians 5:15-17, the Holy Spirit inspired Paul to challenge his readers to “look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, making the best use of the time, because the days are evil. Therefore, do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is.” These three verses provide a poignant distillation of virtually every other passage in the Holy Scriptures that speak to the importance of time. At the dawn of this New Year, my prayer for all of us – and for all of our churches – is that we would live in keen awareness of God’s presence and His will for our lives individually and collec-tively. I am also praying that God will give us clarity to make His priorities our priorities. If we seek Him in this way, time, instead of being “the fire in which we burn,” can be to us as a river whose steady current carries us from one divinely appointed opportunity to another.
In Christ’s Love and Service, Rick Blackwell, Moderator
Church Spotlight
Word of Encouragement
Spotlight on …FBC, Tecumseh FBC, Tecumseh, established in 1892, is one of the strongest and oldest PLBA churches. The pastor is Tony Peak who ac-cepted Christ in 1962 and has served in the ministry since 1984 when he was called by FBC, Tecumseh, as youth minister. Bro. Peak has also served at Mountain Valley Church in Colo-rado and Lovelady Baptist Church in Ada. In 2010, Pastor Peak was called to the pulpit of FBC, Tecumseh, One of the things Pastor Peak especially enjoys about FBC, Tecumseh, is getting to work with some wonderful Christian brothers and sisters. Some of his special ministries include Spotlight on Shawnee, hosting a booth at the annual Tecumseh festival, hosting the Tecumseh Ministerial Alliance food closet, having monthly women’s ministry meetings with girls at COJC, participating in their annual Serve Tecumseh Sunday, and host-ing a Wednesday night Bible Study for OBU students. FBC, Tecumseh, recently finished a $150,000 youth worship center. Pastor Peak asks the PLBA churches to rejoice with him and FBC, Tecumseh, in that he and the church are on mis-sion for Jesus. He asks the PLBA churches pray that he con-tinues to find ways to engage their community with the Gospel.
PLBA WOMEN
A NUGGET FROM MY SPIRITUAL JOURNEY... Ahhhhh...another new year! Whatever will it hold? We all ask that annu-ally, don’t we? We think we have a big start-over button and promise our-selves, friends, family, and God that the next 12 months will be different. We will do better, be better, accomplish more, and won’t break any more promis-es. We will put on a smile and start again. I am personally facing this new year like none other. I reckon in the past 70 years I have always had almost tangible goals—to learn to talk and walk, finish first grade, elementary school, junior high, high school, two college degrees, and jobs that I knew were likely a bit temporary. More? To learn countless scores of music on the piano, keyboard or organ and play at recit-als, weddings, funerals, worship services, and church musicals. To get mar-ried, have children and grandchildren, move with my husband from ministry to ministry, care for my elderly parents. To write and teach, learn to cook and serve countless meals and treats. To travel for fun and for ministry. Then along comes my husband’s “retirement” and the curious questions and interesting comments! “What will you do? Travel?” “How exciting!” I ad-mit those have almost caught me off guard. “What will you do? Travel?” Answers so far: Continue to preach, teach, lead conferences, write. Visit kids and grandkids more. Enjoy time together and sharing our home with others often. Explore Oklahoma and see what we have missed. Explore more of our nation. Help churches and ministries that need help, although international travel is not likely on our radar. “How exciting!” That honestly has surprised me and I have had to think that through. Can you be excited about not doing what you love to do? But, I am beginning to understand that more. No, we won’t stop doing what we love to do. We will just do it in different ways and places. That is exciting. I am learning to see it as a “blank page” turning in life and only God knows what He has written on it! That is exciting. We will continue to trust and obey, trust and adjust. As long as we follow Him, we can’t go wrong. That is exciting! As long as we are on Earth, He has a plan and a purpose for us...and that is exciting!
A BLESSED NEW YEAR TO US ALL! Marsha Cook, Director
