Dear Council Partners and Friends,

In this issue of Life Together! we’re celebrating YOU, our partners, and the community that is created through your partnership with the Council of Churches of the Ozarks.

The Council of Churches of the Ozarks came about 40 years ago to unite churches who agreed to tackle a daunting task together: to fight in the “war on poverty” in our own community. That original purpose still inspires our mission to improve the quality of life in our region in the name of Jesus Christ.

The Council of Churches of the Ozarks was born from the union of two Biblical mandates: Matthew 25:35-40 which compels the followers of Jesus to recognize that we are serving Him when we care for the vulnerable, the “least” among us; and John 17:20-23 in which Jesus prays for us to “be brought to complete unity to let the world know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me.” Our experience is that when we practice the former, we begin to experience the latter. There is nothing quite like working together to build relationships and unity of spirit.

These shared relationships, values and vision is what gives traction to the work of the Council of Churches. Today our nine service agencies are highly focused and specialized communities that are networked together in order to improve the quality of life for some of the most vulnerable people in our region, from cradle to grave. Through our service agencies the Council of Churches continues to be the hands and feet of ministry that expands the capacity of our congregational, individual and business partners to make a real difference in the quality of life for the most vulnerable in our communities in the Ozarks.

The Council of Churches of the Ozarks is where common ground is higher ground, the sort of higher ground that offers a vantage point from which we can begin to see the face of God in, with and through our community.

gifts to the Council of Churches are eligible to be matched dollar-for-dollar up to $40,000!

The New “Power of Together” $40,000 Challenge is made possible by a visionary and generous group of individuals, businesses and foundations that have come together with the Council of Churches board of directors to leverage donations by doubling your gift up to $40,000.

Demand for our services is up across the board in 2009: • Ambassadors For Children is reporting an increase of 64% in the number of

foster children served by the Kids Clothes Closet; • Crosslines is reporting an increase in the number of new households being served

in excess of 16%, and an increase of 12% in households requesting food assistance;

• Connections Handyman Services is reporting an increase of 30% in requests for ramps and essential home repairs for low-income seniors;

• Therapeutic Riding of the Ozarks has increased its client base by more than 50%;

• The services of RSVP, Daybreak Adult Daycare, Long-term Care Ombudsman, Child Care Food Program and Child Care Resource and Referral are also in greater demand.

The unique work of the Council of Churches is needed now more than ever before.Our present economic hard times also present an opportunity to evaluate and examine our priorities. Over the course of our 40 years of ministry, the Council of Churches of the Ozarks has weathered many different seasons thanks to compassionate partners like you who embrace the priorities of Jesus Christ.

In a folksy, easy-to-read style and a deeply personal accounting, Dorsey Levell recalls his thirty-one years as founding executive director of the Council of Churches of the Ozarks, Springfield, Missouri. He takes readers through his successes and his failures. From his early and tentative days with the Council when he was ready to quit because there was no office, no staff and no budget, to an annual budget of twelve-million-dollars. From the heady days of seemingly unstoppable growth of the Council, to a fear he would cause its downfall in his despair over the unexpected death from cancer of his closest friend and co-worker. He speaks frankly of his divorce after forty-three years of marriage, being diagnosed with degenerative arthritis, battling prostate cancer, undergoing five-way heart bypass surgery, his nearly three decades as a chaplain in the U.S. Army Reserves, and his love for the outdoors, especially fishing. During his tenure the Council created fifteen human service agencies, grew to more than one-hundred-twenty paid staff and more than one-thousand volunteers, and was recognized through-out the United States as a model of effective outreach ministries.
