Ecclesiastes 4:4-16(Part 7)

Page 4: Life Under The Sun 08 Pt7 (Lifes Dirty Little Secrets)

Secret #1 - Envy (4:4-6)

And I saw that all labor and all achievement spring from man's envy of his neighbor.

This too is meaningless, a chasing after the wind.

The fool folds his hands and ruins himself.

Better one handful with tranquility than two handfuls with toil and chasing after the wind.

Secret #1 - Envy (4:4-6)

“Envy is the daughter of pride,

the author of murder and revenge, the beginner of secret sedition and

the perpetual tormentor of virtue. Envy is the filthy slime of the soul;

a venom, a poison, or quicksilver which consumes the flesh and

dries up the marrow of the bones.” – Socrates

Sacred Thoughts About Envy...A heart at peace gives life to the body,

but envy rots the bones. Proverbs 14:30Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it

does not boast, it is not proud. 1 Corinthians 13:4Who is wise and understanding among you? Let him show it by his good life, by deeds done in the humility that comes from wisdom. But if you harbor bitter envy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast about it or deny the truth. Such "wisdom" does not come down from heaven but is earthly, unspiritual, of the devil. For where you have envy and selfish ambition, there you find disorder and every evil practice. James 3:13-16

Secret #2 - Loneliness (4:7-12)

Again I saw something meaningless under the sun:

There was a man all alone; he had neither son nor brother.

There was no end to his toil, yet his eyes were not content with his wealth.

"For whom am I toiling," he asked, "and why am I depriving myself of enjoyment?"

This too is meaningless- a miserable business!

Secret #2 - Loneliness (4:7-12)

“It is strange to be

known so universally

and yet to be so lonely.”

– Albert Einstein

“On stage I make love to

twenty five thousand people;

and then I go home alone.”

– Janis Joplin

Sacred Thoughts about Loneliness (4:7-12)

Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their work:

If one falls down, his friend can help him up. But pity the man who falls

and has no one to help him up! Also, if two lie down together, they will keep warm.

But how can one keep warm alone? Though one may be overpowered,

two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.

Secret #3 - Irrelevance (4:13-16)Better a poor but wise youth than an old but foolish king who no longer knows how to take warning. The youth may have come from prison to the kingship, or he may have been born in poverty within his kingdom. I saw that all who lived and walked under the sun followed the youth, the king's successor. There was no end to all the people who were before them. But those who came later were not pleased with the successor. This too is meaningless, a chasing after the wind.

Sacred Thoughts About Irrelevance When they found him on the other side of the

lake, they asked him, "Rabbi, when did you get here?" Jesus answered, "I tell you the truth, you are looking for me, not because you saw

miraculous signs but because you ate the loaves and had your fill.

Do not work for food that spoils, but for food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of

Man will give you. On him God the Father has placed his seal of approval." John 6:25-27
