As usual, the summer has flown by. While many of the treesand most of the crops are still wearing their summer green, some have begun to dress in fall colors. I love the colors offall – but I hate the idea of impending winter. So, I look on thebright side of it and think about Thanksgiving, Christmas, ourfamily’s fall and winter birthdays, and December 20th.

Why December 20th? Because December 20th is the shortestday of the year, which means every day after it grows margin-ally longer and leads us into Spring. Don’t get me wrong. Iknow that each day still has 24 hours in it. But the sunshine

and growth of Spring and the lazy days of Summer with their abundance of sunshine are thedays that I truly love.

It’s been interesting to note the cycles within the Chamber of Commerce, as well. We havebusy times and then we have really busy times! But just as I wait for Spring, I look forward toeach day and the challenges and opportunities it presents.

The comments from the staff and travelers aboard the American Queen were extremely com-plimentary. Clinton hospitality is second to none! We’re disappointed that the AmericanDuchess had to postpone their inaugural cruise due to weather conditions, but we look for-ward to their trip – hopefully in the near future!

The beginning of the month of September will bring a community tour for Mark Lowe, theDirector of the Iowa Department of Transportation. Many community leaders will be on handto welcome Mark and introduce him to our community. Some will be on a tour, and many willbe attending a working lunch to discuss the exciting things we have accomplished here andthe many other opportunities that may await us. We at the Chamber are excited to be hostingthis event, working with our board, the Clinton Regional Development Corporation, the City, the County, representatives from the Downtown and Lyons business groups, and severalactive members of the Highway 30 committee. There’s no limit to what can be done when weare working together toward a common goal!

The Celebrate Clinton attitude continues to grow and flourish! The final Rockin’ the Riverevent will be September 16th in conjunction with the Downtown Clinton Alliance annualOktoberfest. Don’t miss the first-ever “Race of the Wieners”, a competition for wiener dogsand other short-legged dogs. There will be activities for the whole family, so be sure to savethe date and come downtown for good food and free entertainment that Saturday night!

Until next month, don’t forget to Celebrate Clinton!

Maureen
