“I was surprised to learn how many sculptures Mason City owns and the number of sculptures that are on loan from various artists from around the country. In all there are currently something like a total of 70+ sculptures on display in the downtown area.” Leah

“The River City Sculptures On Parade walking tour offered by Lifelong Learning exemplifies the very best of NIACC’s approach to learning. It celebrates the richness of culture within our community; the lecturer on the tour was exceptionally well prepared and informed and shared history and detail about each sculpture that enhanced the art. To top it off, it is simply fun to stroll about Mason City and get culture and exercise in one shot! A big thank you to Lifelong Learning for offering this course and expanding our appreciation of the arts.” Jackie

“It was a very enjoyable tour. The detail on the sculptures by the artists is amazing. It was hard to pick a favorite but “Sundays with Jessie” was special. A little boy and his dog sharing an ice cream cone. Thanks for the tour and now I want to see the other half.” Ramona

As we transition to a new semester where we practice safe procedures, I am excited to offer classes once more where we can open up our doors to full capacity. While we were operating under COVID-19 public health department guidelines to ensure the safety of all our members in the past, I did hear how much many of you missed getting together in the classroom. I know that this fall, we will be able to do just that!

The fall line-up of classes include both in-person and online options to accommodate both instructors as well as members. I am thrilled to welcome new faculty to join our growing NIACC LLI faculty family. Please take the opportunity to take one of their classes. Lifelong learning is about trying something new, and challenging ourselves to expand our horizons—whether it includes learning a new language, a new culture, a new style of cooking, or a new class in history or religion.

So, please tell a friend or two, or a new neighbor, and invite them to the kickoff coffee! I hope to see you there!

Let’s have a great fall semester!

Darshini Jayawardena, Director, Community Engagement and Lifelong Learning Institute

Greetings, Lifelong Learners! Greetings Lifelong Learners, Happy New Year! It is my pleasure and honor to welcome you to the spring 2019 semester of classes. You will discover a wide variety of opportunities to explore topics such as histo-ry, literature, art, music, foreign language, and current events. You will also learn from our growing cadre of knowledgeable faculty who will introduce you to new countries, new skills and new experiences.

The goal of the Lifelong Learning Institute is to help you to expand your horizons, and at the same time challenge you to try new classes. The ukulele players on the front cover certainly seem to have done this very easily, while having fun at the same time.

This semester, I hope to encourage you to come to a class or two that you would never have thought of attending. Since there is no pressure of tests or homework to worry about, there is nothing to lose. One of your new year’s resolutions could be to sign up for a class or two outside your comfort zone. Let me know when you do. I guarantee that you will be pleasantly surprised.

So, I look forward to seeing you in class!

IS THERE RACISM IN IOWA?Instructor: Pat SchultzDates: Wednesdays, September 8 & 15Time: 3:00pm – 5:00pmLocation: BC200Course#: 9999Recently, a member of the Iowa legislature claimed, “There is no racism in Iowa.” Of course, that raises curiosity: Is that true? What about in the past? Has racism really had any impact on Iowans? These questions inspired your instructor to dig deeper into the research on this subject. While the presentation will cover examples of racism, it will also cover positive actions taken in the state. For example, not long after the Civil War, the Iowa Supreme Court held that segregated schools were inherently unequal because “the law makes no distinction as to the right of children … to atten t e ommon s oo s. is appene 8 years before such a decision was made at the national level. With the development of Black Lives Matter and issues of racism in the forefront, this two-session class will present the history and give participants a chance to discuss what they learn. This course is not about blaming, but about learning more about the history of our state and how the history impacts us today. Pat Schultz is a retired Language Arts instructor, Lifelong Learning instructor, and retired board member and executive director of Wright on the Park.

EXAMPLES OF CONTINUING EDUCATION CLASSES Fees to be paid at registration. Russian Cooking Instructor: Robert Mulcahy Date: Wednesday, September 9 Time: 6:30pm-7:30 pm Location: NIACC Charles City Center Room 110 Class ID: 6781 Fee: $50.00

Are you tired of hamburgers and steak? Can you not look at another French fry? Are you desperate to try something new? What about Russian food? Have you ever tried something as exotic-sounding as borshch, bliny, or pirozhki? While Italian and French cuisine rank high among culinary aficionados, Russian food is often relegated to the bottom of the list, with a wide-ranging perception that it consists of such bland choices as cabbage, beats, meat, and vodka. Although this is partly true, the variety of Russian food may surprise you! This course serves as an introduction to the traditional foods that Russians eat and explores the role that various dishes play in Russian culture. In four lessons, we will read about & discuss the most popular Russian foods, and also cook some of the more traditional dishes. When you are finished with this course, you will be able to host a Russian night for your "foodie" friends! All supplies included!

Winter Bird Feeding Instructor: Ellen Montgomery Date: Thursday, October 22 Tinme: 6:30pm – 8:30pm Location: NIACC AC101 Class ID: 6419 Fee: $18.00 Come learn which birds come to the feeders in the winter, what foods they will want and what kinds of feeders will work best to attract the most birds.
