LIFE OF THE SKY BAG—Part 1 By Kate Veselunka, C. 2017
Summary of Part 1: Make Top Piece and 3 each of 2 different large flowers. Color changes are up to the individual. However, instructions will be given in these large flowers to match the photos and color changes shown.
Step 1: Top Piece of Bag Ch 140 (about 26 inches/66cm). Do not join with sl st to first chain, but making sure not to twist chain, sc into each ch. Without joining, continue with sc in a spiral until your work measures 3 inches/7.5 cm. Sl st into next sc to close. Fasten off and weave in ends. Note: The use of a stitch marker will help to keep track of rounds.
Step 2: Summer Day Flower: Make 3
Puff Stitch: (Yo, insert hook, yo and pull up a loop to height of a dc) 5 times, yo and pull through all 11 loops, ch1 to close (does not count as a stitch). Starting Puff Stitch: (Do not start with a slip knot if using new color.) Insert hook into indicated stitch, loop yarn over hook, pull up a loop to height of a dc, (yo, insert hook, yo and pull up a loop) 4 times, yo and pull through all loops, ch 1 to close. Pattern: Ch 6, join with sl st to form a ring or make a magic ring Round 1: 10 sc into the ring, do not join. (10 sc) (See P1)
P1
Round 2: Working over round 1 and pulling up loop a bit longer, 10 sc into ring, join with a sl st to first sc. Fasten off. (10 sc) (See P2 & 3)
P2
P3 (Rd 3-‐7 See P4) Round 3: Starting Puff in first sc, ch 3, (Puff stitch into next sc, ch 3) 9 times. Join with a sl st to top of first puff. Fasten off. (10 puff sts) Round 4: Standing dc into ch3-‐sp from row 3, 4 dc into same ch3-‐sp, (5 dc in next ch3-‐sp) 9 times. Join with a sl st to beginning standing dc. (50 dc) Round 5: Ch4 (counts as dc + ch1), (sk next dc, dc in next dc, ch1) 24 times, do not skip next dc but work a dc into it, ch 1. Join with a sl st to 3rd ch of beginning ch 4. Fasten off. (26 dc, 26 ch1-‐sps) Note: If work curls, use a ch2 instead of ch1 in this round.
Round 6: Standing sc in last ch1-‐sp, (ch 4, sk next ch1-‐sp, sc in next ch1-‐sp) 12 times, ch 4. Join with a sl st to standing sc. (13 sc, 13 ch4-‐sps) Note: Work will curl slightly. Round 7: Sl st into ch4-‐sp, ch 3, (2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) into same ch4-‐sp, (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc into next ch4-‐sp) 12 times. Join with a sl st to 3rd ch of beginning ch 3. Fasten off. (78dc, 13 ch2-‐sps)
P4 Round 8: This round is not marked on the chart. You will find it helpful to rotate your work as you crochet up and down the posts. Start with standing dc in any skipped ch1-‐sp from round 5. 2 dc in same space. Work (3 dc around the post of round 5 dc, from top to bottom; work 3 dc around the post of next dc, from bottom to top; 3 dc into ch1-‐sp.) Repeat until end of round, omitting last 3 dc, join to the standing dc with a sl st. Fasten off and weave in ends. (See P5)

Step 3: Hearts Flower: Make 3
Puff Stitch: (Yo, insert hook, yo and pull up a loop to height of a dc) 5 times, yo and pull through all 11 loops, ch1 to close (does not count as a stitch) Starting Puff Stitch: (Do not start with a slip knot if using new color.) Insert hook into indicated stitch, loop yarn over hook, pull up a loop to height of a dc, (yo, insert hook, yo and pull up a loop) 4 times, yo and pull through all loops, ch 1 to close. Picot: ch 3, sl st into 3rd ch from hook (Rounds 1-‐6 see P1) Pattern: Ch 6, join with sl st to form a ring or make magic ring. Round 1: Ch 3 (counts as dc), 15 dc into the ring. Sl st into 3rd chain. (16 dc) Round 2: Ch 4 (counts as dc + ch 1), 2 dc in the next dc, ch 1, (dc in the next st, ch 1, 2 dc in the next dc, ch 1) 7 times, join to the 3rd ch with a sl st. (24 dc, 16 ch1-‐sps) Round 3: Ch 3 (counts as dc), 2 dc in the same st, (skip all ch-‐1 sps), dc in the next 2 sts, (3 dc in the next st, dc in the next 2 sts) 7 times, join to the 3rd ch with a sl st. (8 x 3dc-‐groups, 16 dc) Round 4: Ch 5 (counts as dc + ch 2), sk 1 dc, (dc in the next dc, ch 2, sk 1 dc) 19 times. Join to the 3rd ch with a sl st. (20 dc, 20 ch2-‐sps) Round 5: Sl st into ch2-‐sp. Work starting puff st in same space, ch 3, (in next ch2-‐sp work puff st, ch 3) 19 times, sl st into first puff st (20 puff sts, 20 ch3sps) Round 6: Ch1 (does not count as stitch), (4 sc into the ch3-‐sp, sk puff st) 20 times. Join to the first sc with a sl st. (80 sc) Fasten off and secure ends. P1 Round 7 will be worked around the 2dc-‐group and ch1-‐sps of Round 2
P2 P2 The red 'V' on Round 2 shows where you work around the posts of the 2dc-‐group and the red 'o' the ch1-‐sps on each side, the single dc will not be worked around. Round 7: This is not on chart. Note: when working up the dc posts you will find it easier if you rotate your work, then rotate it again to work into the ch1-‐sps. Work a standing dc around the post of the 2nd dc of any 2dc-‐group, 2dc around same dc post (photo 3), rotate work, working from bottom to top 3dc around the first post of the 2dc-‐group, (see photo 4), rotate work. *3dc into ch1-‐sp after (to the left, for right-‐handed) this 2dc-‐group, work a picot, sk 1 dc, 3 dc into next ch1-‐sp (photo 5), sk 1 dc, 3 dc around post of next dc (second of 2dc-‐group) from top to bottom (photo 6), rotate work, 3 dc around the post of last skipped dc (first of the 2dc-‐group) from bottom to top, rotate work. Go over the first 3dc post group, to make a spiral (photo 7)* 7 times. 3 dc into next ch1-‐sp, picot, sk 1 dc, 3 dc into next ch1-‐sp. Join with a sl st to the 1st dc by inserting hook through the space between the 2nd-‐3dc post group and next 3dc (worked into ch1-‐sp) and pulling the stitch through to work the joining sl st. A little fiddly but will now make a spiral the same as the others. = 8 petals and 8 spirals. Weave in ends. P3 -‐ 3dc worked around post of 2dc-‐group
P4 -‐ 3dc around both posts of the 2dc-‐group P5 -‐ 3dc into ch1-‐sp, picot, 3dc into ch1-‐sp P6-‐ working 3dc around post of next 2dc-‐group
P7 -‐ spiral formed and next 3dc, picot, 3dc P8 -‐ completed Round 7
