About “Manickam Athappa Gounder”

❖ He is 70 years old energetic young man with lot of ambition to install Good

Governance advocated by Manu Neethi Cholan who ruled 2350 years back which

has no match in the whole world and make Indian Farmers and the people to be

proud about their birth as Indian.

❖ After BE graduation his father refused permission to go to USA. So, he became

self -employed and introduced “Make in India” concept in 1973 by adopting a

policy to make equipment and systems that never existed in India or in the world

using in house developed technology.

❖ Instead of importing technology and knowhow, he took the Indian Aerospace

digital Technology to Germany and USA and now having a plant in USA since

1997, but still maintaining the manufacturing hub in India.

❖ His company, “MAK Controls & Systems (P) LTD” ranks World No.2 in Aerospace

Ground Support Equipment Manufacturing Industry in terms of volume and

technology and can be # 1 soon

❖ His “Make in India Technology” customers include NASA, BOEING, LOCKHEED

MARTIN apart from Indian Air force, Army and Navy, US Air force and equipment

serving in more than 50+ Airliners worldwide and in 40+ countries.

❖ Joined Hands with Indian Air force, Navy and Army since 1976 through DRDO,

BEL, BDL & NSA for utilizing his cost-effective technology in supporting our

military planes, Indian Missile support system and sensitive radar support

systems and plays a major role in all missile and missile defense roles.

❖ He has proven, on-field tested solution for every type of pollution. To prevent the

Ground Water Pollution, as per Shri. Abdul Kalam Ji’s vision, he took the DRDO

patented Technology for Bio Digester Septic Tanks and perfected the system and

made it available for public and successfully installed more than 1000+ Bio

Digester Septic Tank units across south India and cleaned lakes using similar

technology.

❖ Invented Municipal Waste (MSW) Disposal system that makes waste to Zero

waste in 24 hours which is working at Erode Municipal Corporation since May

2018. This will avoid harmful Municipal Dump yards/Landfills without causing

any Pollution to Environment.

❖ Through his research association with Agri Scientists and Farmers, he carried out

a lot of research works and invented the Effective Organic Farm Inputs which

improves the profits of every Indian farmer by achieving farm productivity target.

❖ His Ultimate Aim is to Make Farmers Stand in their own leg and make them live

with a pride that they are feeding even the king by achieving minimum profit

of Rs.1 Lakh/Acre/Year. To achieve this, he has been conducting several

awareness meetings and providing instant solution to the farmers and so

far about 5% of farmers in Tamil Nadu are benefitted.

A. As an Industrialist

Thiru. Manickam Athappa Gounder has born and brought up in an agricultural family. In the year

1973, established a company called MAK Controls & Systems (P) Ltd at Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu

which specialises in manufacturing aviation Ground Support Equipment (GSE) and Military

systems.

“Make in India” was his concept right from starting this company. He has never made a product

or system that already existed in the Country. His company was more a research-oriented

company and employed over 300 engineers, technicians and 200 skilled employees.

B. As a Social Reformer:

After his volunteer retirement from Managing Director position in MAK Controls & Systems Pvt

Ltd during the year 2010, the business responsibilities were handed over to the younger

generation and his valuable full time was dedicated to social welfare activities such as:

a) For the upliftment of the farmers by making them to stand on their own by earning a

minimum profit of Rs.1 Lakh/acre/year and never depend on government’s help.

b) Cleaning the “Mother Earth” to make her sustainable for living to all the living beings created

by GOD.

c) He took eminent efforts in spreading awareness among youth and like-minded citizens about

the need for installing Good Governance in Tamil Nadu for the state’s betterment and thereby

improving the living standard in the state.

To achieve the above, he has been carrying lot of research works by applying the discipline of

Military and Aerospace Research techniques with plans and back up plans. Most of his research

activities were self-funded, self-equipped and not received any monitory or other kind of support

from Government agencies.

Realizing the ground reality, his research is focussing on the welfare of all living beings.

3. Lifestyle & Philosophy

Vision

❖ To install Manu Neethi rule in Tamil Nadu first and then in India and spread the concept

worldwide.

Took Indian Technology Worldwide

Introduced Make in India concept in 1973 by establishing the aerospace engineering company,

MAK Controls and Systems Private Ltd which made remarkable achievements in High-Tech

Aerospace Indian technology and taken to USA. Established Air+Mak Industries Inc. in the year

1997 to supply smart & futuristic GSE to the American, European and middle Eastern market.

Few of the milestones projects executed are designing and building a special air start unit for

GE90-115B engine testing, aircraft hydraulic system testing trolley and specialized GSE for

Boeing, USA. Air+MAK Industries Inc. has scaled great heights under his proficiency and expertise.

MAK Group association with Germany:

After his success in developing GPU for A320 aircraft in 1993, the only manufacturer in the world

to meet the fly by wire technology, Germany invited him to set up an Aircraft Ground equipment

manufacturing company in their Country and gave 1.50 lac sq.ft facilities for one DM (Deutsche

Mark German currency). He started the company MAK GMBH and survived for 11 months and

quit the country because of the contrast in language and culture.

B. Contribution to the Indian Defence Sector

He entered into Indian Defence sector since Shri Abdul Kalam Ji started working for Defence

department by making ground power system for Sea Harrier aircraft way back 1976. MAK is a

major partner for Indian Military Radar System and Missile System.

His association with Dr Abdul Kalam: Since 1976, MAK group developed equipment that is first

of its kind for defence and aerospace. He is instrumental in encouraging local talents. His

encouragement guidance helped for his success in every project. Ground Power Unit (GPU) for

Sea Harrier aircraft with 50 mv ripple at 200 Amps was a very critical one and no one could

develop in India during 1976. He did it under Shri. kalam’s guidance. Thiru. Manickam used to

interact with Shri. Kalam during the writing stage of Shri. Kalam’s book ‘India Vision 2020 - A

Vision for the new millennium’. Shri. Kalam asked him to work towards finding a solution for

every type of pollution. Today he has achieved it.

With the sheer hard work, dedication and patriotism, he took the initiative to partner with Indian

Defence projects. MAK Group is a partner and associated with the prestigious defence projects of

our country like Akash, Nishanth, MRSAM, APU for main battle tanks, Rohini, Ashwini, Arudhra

Radars, Agni, Nirbhay, Aditya and much more.

MAK offers customers complete power system solutions from design, development,

manufacturing and operational support for ground and marine based defence applications. MAK’s

customized power system ranges from a compact 2.5kVA unit up to 12MW containersied power

supply.

Took Aerospace Digital Control Technology to USA:

Boing wanted air starter for B777 aircraft with twin engine with the largest power plant of 110

Pound thrust GE engine. His company was chosen as development partner and he successfully

completed the project. His association with Boeing and General Electric started since 1999. He

has a plant in USA since 1997 for producing aircraft ground equipment catering to American and

European Continent.

C. Contribution to the Society

Tirupur Dyeing Factory:

✓ Restored Noyyal River from the polluting dyers of Tirupur through contempt court action

which took over 14 years. He finally, found solution for every pollution and working hard to

implement the program.

✓ Got Rs. 75 Crore compensation from Judiciary for the affected farmers because of polluted

Noyyal River Water.

Price Fixation for Gloriosa Superba Medicinal Seeds:

✓ In 2014, he fixed standard price for farmers growing Gloriosa Superba Seed (GSS): This is a

medicinal plant grown in Mulanur Tamil Nadu State. In the whole world, these farmers

developed techniques to grow GSS commercially. This needs an initial investment of Rs 4.00

lacs / acre. Over 3000 farmers grow in about 5000 acres. The price of seed dropped from

Rs.2,000/kg to Rs.650/kg and these farmers were on the verge of ploughing and destroying

the crop. He intervened, did research on the basic problems and fixed minimum price of Rs

1,200/kg applying the concept of Rs 1.00 lac net minimum profit / acre / year. He bought

about 5,000 Kg of the seed using his own tax paid money at this minimum price to tell the

trade that he will buy the entire produce. Then traders reconciled and bought at the fixed rate.

The price went from Rs 650 in 2013 to Rs 2,000 in 2015, Rs 2,500 in 2016 and stabilized at

Rs 3,000 in 2017 benefitting the farmers.

Fixed Minimum Support Price for Tapioca:

✓ In 2015, he fixed standard price for Farmers growing Tapioca: The price of Tapioca fell below

the harvesting cost. He intervened and did lot of research to find the reason for the price drop

and then prepared a research paper to implement the schemes for stabilization of the price. I

fixed the minimum price for about Rs 7.50 per Kg. Also found and implemented a method to

preserve and stock them. Then trained the farmers on how to do it. The traders got tough

message from him with cold threats, that he will buy the entire produce and use it to produce

ethanol depriving the availability of Tapioca in the market. Then, the price got stabilized in 3

weeks. As of 2017, the price is Rs.14.00 per Kg. The system will never allow the price to fall

below the set minimum price of Rs 7.50/kg which will make them earn a net profit of Rs 1.00/-

lacs per year / acre.

Fixed Minimum Support Price for Cashews:

✓ The dry Cashew fruit price is low during seasonal time. The Panruti Farmers produce the best,

healthy and highest quality Cashew nuts in the world. It used to be Rs 110/-per Kg at the

beginning of the season. It goes high up to Rs 250/-during non-season. He intervened and

fixed a minimum price of Rs 180/-per Kg. He sent a message that the farmers should not sell

below the minimum price and then assured them that he would buy if the traders are not

cooperating. However, the traders understood the background of him and started buying at

the fixed price mentioned by him. The fact is that the farmers themselves now took the price

to Rs 200/-and entire produce in 2017 season was sold at this price.

Fixed Minimum Support Price for Ooty Carrots, Potatoes, Garlic:

✓ In 2016, after the demonetisation was announced, the Nilgiris (Ooty) vegetable price fell

below harvesting cost. The carrot price came down to Rs.10/kg. It was not worth harvesting.

The trade was mostly in cash transactions and most of them opposed demonetisation.

Vegetables worth over Rs 100.00 Cr were never harvested. He intervened and fixed a

minimum price for the hill vegetables of Rs 18/-per Kg for Carrot, Rs 18/-per Kg for Potato

and Rs 90/-per Kg for Garlic which is the major produces in the Nilgiris. He also met the

traders and convinced the traders regarding the benefits of doing business through bank

transactions and keeping the price stable. As of 2017, the trade has stabilised. The prices for

all these produces are well above the set minimum price declared by him.

Fixed Minimum Support Price for Kolias – Medicinal Herb:

✓ He has conducted several important meetings with traders, farmers and fixed a reasonable

price for Kolias Plant (highly rated medicinal plant)

Encouraging Secondary Income for Farmers:

✓ To support farmers with secondary income through cultivating honey, he donated beehives

and given expert training to make it profitable and permanent additional income apart from

their regular farming business.

His contribution to protect our Ancient Native Rice Varieties:

✓ He donated our ancient native rice seed varieties to organic farmers and encouraged them to

grow it for our future and preserve our traditional nutritious rice varieties.

Fixing Minimum Support Price for Groundnuts:

✓ Ground nut produced in the Panruti are the tastiest and exported to other countries. Thiru.

Manickam fixed the price of sorted Ground nut at Rs 75/-per Kg and it got stabilized at Rs

90/-per Kg during 2017 itself.

Fixing Minimum Support Price for all Crops:

✓ Close to 5% of the farmers are benefitted by his policy of fixing minimum price for the farm

produce in the state of Tamil Nadu and it is increasing day by day.

✓ He is working relentlessly to fix minimum price for all farm produce and to make the farmers

stand on their own leg and also keep the consumer price at the existing level and also never

affect the traders as they are back bone of distribution.

D. Contributions to Save Mother Earth

Lot of research has been carried out by Thiru. Manickam “To Save Mother Earth” and then he

submitted a research paper to Prime Minister Office. It was titled as “Solution for Every

Pollution”. If this plan is implemented, the entire country could become pollution free in

less than 7 years. To demonstrate the usefulness of his research, he used one of his

companies to start developing systems that would comply with pollution norms.

Treating Textile Trade Effluent:

✓ He entered into MoU with South India Textile Research Association (SITRA) to develop

and commercialize technology that would eliminate textile trade effluent pollution.

✓ He is also working with IIT Guwahati for Nano filtering technology as a backup system for

avoiding trade effluent and re-using the water and the salt making it Zero discharge.

✓ To have yet another backup, he is also working on water-less dyeing and negotiating with

Ahmedabad Textile Industry's Research Association (ATIRA) who has developed this

technology for man-made fibre with the help of Technology Development Board (TDB) and

would like to apply for cotton fibre also in less than two years.

Managing Municipal Solid Wastes:

✓ Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) management using Zero Waste Disposal Technology – He

invented this Technology for Municipal Solid Wastes, probably first time in the country

which is certified by Tamilnadu Pollution Control Board and by August 2019 GCC (Greater

Chennai Corporation) has implemented this technology in Manali, Chennai to clear the

Landfills and daily generated municipal solid wastes. If one sincerely adopts this, there won’t

be any municipal dumpyard in our country. And In the long run, it will reduce global

warming, water and air pollution which ultimately lead to disease free clean environment.

✓ MSW has more combustible items. He conducted many experiments and found the entire

waste could be burnt and reduced into ash without causing any air pollution. This is now

demonstrated and running successfully in Erode District R&D Plant which is noticed &

applauded by several government & corporate bodies. Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board

has recognized this Invention.

✓ Honourable Governor of Tamilnadu – Shri. Banwarilal Purohit applauded his unique Solution for Municipal Solid Waste through Zero Waste Disposal Technology and invited him personally for a 30minute detailed discussion about putting a “Solution for Every Pollution” in Raj Bhavan, Chennai and wished him to take this technology throughout India.

✓ Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has also recognized his technology and his Zero

waste disposal scientific MAK Green Incinerator and installed in Manali, Chennai.

✓ Many corporations across India is now approaching us to put a solution for their Municipal

Solid Wastes.

Installation of Bio Digester Septic Tanks to put a full stop for Sewage Water:

✓ In 2013, he did a research on life-killer diseases like Chikungunya, Dengue, etc. The research

paper showed that mosquitos living in septic tank water are the main cause for such diseases

and also found that the existing septic tank is aerobic and most of the deadly bacteria cannot

be eliminated by using any of the effluent treating methods. So, he approached Defence

Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) for their patented technology using

anaerobic method to be used in every toilet in the country. He, then improved the technology

to adopt in the plains. This septic tank is totally a closed one and there is no question of

percolation of septic tank water directly into the ground. Being anaerobic, all bacteria will be

killed.

✓ He signed a Transfer of Technology (TOT) with DRDO in 2013 and started making Bio

Digester septic tanks since then. Over 1000+ BDST units have been working in South India.

Now he has submitted a proposal to the Swatch Bharat Ministry for making it mandatory for

all the future toilets in the country and also for funding conversion of the Existing toilets to

become Bio Toilets. He also submitted a proposal for the District of Nilgiris, a hilly area which

is the main catchment area of drinking water for over 50,00,000 people relying on the water

resources originating in these hills. Over 70% of people in this area are using open defecation.

This proposal will:

• Eliminate open defecation and also will make every toilet to use bio septic tanks to save ground water which is the main source for drinking in the hilly terrain.

• Make drinking water clean to benefit over 50 lac people. • Avoid all deadly diseases including urinal track infection • Bio Digester Septic Tanks eliminates the need of manual maintenance for lifetime.

Making Organic Farming by Default:

✓ Being a Traditional Organic farmer, he has never used harmful chemicals so called fertilizers,

which worsen the health of public and our lively soil. He is working hard on making organic

farming by default in the entire country. His invention of modern-day organic farm inputs is

very much popular among organic farmers which gives high quality yield at low maintenance

cost.

Restoration of Rivers, Ponds, Lakes and Water bodies:

✓ His technology has successfully restored Highly Polluted Lalbagh Lake (near Lalbagh

botanical garden campus), Bangalore through MAK ST-250 inoculum

✓ He Cleaned the highly polluted pond of Vaitheeswaran Temple which is very infectious to use

further through his bacteria and Aerator technology, which made the pond water very pure

and best for consumption.

✓ He also Conducted various Awareness camps in and around Tamilnadu to stress the urgent

need of preserving and respecting the water bodies and made public to realize, how badly the

life-giving water resources are getting polluted.

This equipment involves the principle of thermal decomposition of unsegregated Municipal Solid

Waste with state of art pollution control equipment.

After combustion, the wastes are converted into ash and carbon. Further using few additives, the

ash is being converted into solid bricks, using special formulation. The emissions are subjected to

various stages of pollution control equipment and the exit emissions meet both TNPCB and CPCB

norms. Thus, the solid wastes are disposed in an eco-friendly way.

7. Creating Awareness about Good Governance

1. Good Governance through Good Governors: He did research on how to achieve good

governance under the current political system and submitted a proposal to PMO on this issue. He

proposed Good Governance through Good Governors. This calls for honest and efficient

administrators as Governors for every state. Governor being the constitutional authority has all

powers to install Good Governance over a period of a year or two. The Governors have to be

trained to handle situations that will arise in achieving the goal. He suggested Shri D. Gangappa

IAS (Retd.) as ideal Governor for Tamil Nadu who would set an example.

2. Good Governance through educating the people: Also, he has registered Manu Neethi

Foundation (in memory of the great King Manu Neethi Cholan). He devised a method to choose

an honest candidate to be fielded by the political party. He is in the process of popularizing this

and make all the political parties to come to table for public debate and make them accept this

concept or get rejected by the people.

8. Family Background

Thiru. Manickam has been born & brought up as a Farm Boy. He worked in farm and learned

farming during school days and continue to be a farmer till date. Took fathers advice to be useful

to our Nation and so started the company to serve our nation after graduation in 1973 instead of

going to USA, even he rejected the job offers received from NASA and several multinational

companies.

His wife Thirumathi. Malliga Manickam is also an organic farmer and director of MAK Controls &

Systems Pvt. Ltd. His son Thiru. Saravanan Manickam is now the Managing director of MAK Group

of Companies, popularizing Indian products across the globe. His daughter Thirumathi. Nithya

Manickam is working in Facebook and holding a Continental Head position in Finance

department.
