LifeTrain Workshop: Achievements and challenges in lifelong learning for the
biomedical sciences
The LifeTrain journey
4th LifeTrain Workshop March 2015
Armel Stockis, Mike Hardman
Objective: developing a vision for where LifeTrain should be in 12 months’ time by: 1. Sharing CPD initiatives and opportunities
• identification of case studies that illustrate good practice consistent with LifeTrain principles
• competency frameworks & training opportunities
2. Extending the awareness & reach of LifeTrain principles
• expand the network of LifeTrain signatories, understand and address the barriers to sign-up
• understand and address the challenges associated with wider dissemination
3. Identification of future opportunities for LifeTrain
• develop ideas that align with future IMI policy & funding
The challenge
Traditional approach • Biology • Pharmacology • Chemistry • Pharmacy • Immunology • Medicine
• Professional development
within silos • Limited sharing of knowledge
between them
21st century approach • Predictive science • Translational medicine • Personalised health care • Open innovation • Big data…
• Need to collaborate between
disciplines • Need to shift discipline • Silo-based approach to
professional development doesn’t work!
The solution
Every professional in the biomedical sciences needs to develop and maintain an optimal level of professional competence, to speed up the development of better medicines for patients
Better medicines for patients
Competency portfolio
An individual competency portfolio should capture all relevant information in order to facilitate mobility, and to support career development.

Include section on competence development in all EU projects • Relevant • Irrelevant
Make competence development the default option in all EU projects • Address • Opt out
Make competence development a requirement for all EU projects • Address
