Still he journeyed on until he reached Pava where he became critically ill by partaking food offered by Cunda, a blacksmith, and on the full-moon day of February, knowing that his end was near, he came at evening to Kusinagara, a place about one hundred miles from Benares. In the Sala grove of the Mallas between two Sala trees he had his bedding spread with his head towards the north and his face looking to the west according to the ancient customs. He lay down and with his mind perfectly clear, gave his final instructions to his disciples and entered Parinirvana. (From The Jodo Shinshu Seiten pg. 275) With the calendar page turning to February, we enter what should be the heart of winter. However, in the last several years we have been experiencing such balmy winters that last year the cherry blossoms started blooming by the end of the month. I don’t know what this year will be like, but we do know that spring is just around the corner. February is also the month in which we observe the Nirvana Day Service, observing the passing of the historical Buddha, Sakyamuni. According to the story of Sakyamuni Buddha’s life, the Buddha attained enlightenment at the age of 35 in a place called Bodh Gaya in northern India. From that point on, the Buddha travelled throughout the area spreading the Dharma over a span of 45 years, until he passed away at the age of eighty. It is said that in his eightieth year in a place known as Kusinagara, the Buddha entered Parinirvana, or Perfect Enlightenment under the Sala trees with his head placed to the north and his face pointing to the west. The word “Parinirvana” can be broken down into two parts. “Pari” means perfect, and “nirvana” means to extinguish the flames. Putting the two halves together we get the “Perfect Extinguishing of the Flames (of our defilements)”. Even though the Buddha attained enlightenment at the age of 35, because he continued to have a physical body, he had to take life in order to survive, thus it was not considered the perfect enlightenment. This only came about with his entering Parinirvana. The passing of the Buddha into Parinirvana is so important to all Buddhists because it is during his last talk that he said, “My disciples, my last moment has come, but do not forget that death is only the end of the physical body. The body was born from parents and was nourished by food; just as inevitable are sickness and death. But the true Buddha is not a human body: - it is Enlightenment. A human body must die, but the Wisdom of Enlightenment will exist forever in the truth of the Dharma, and in the practice of the Dharma. He who sees merely my body does not truly see me. Only he who accepts my teaching truly sees me.” With these words, Buddhism transcended from a teaching of an individual to truly a Universal teaching that still is fresh and very much needed in our modern era, some twenty five hundred years since the Buddha’s passing away. >> Continued on Page 2

What The Buddha Taught Us With His Passing

In the forty-fifth year after his attaining Buddhahood, he became ill at Vaishali and predicted that after three months he would enter Parinirvana.

275) With the calendar page turning to February, we enter what

should be the heart of winter.

FUJINKAIHiroko Yoshihara

Thanks to the foresight of Bud Sakamoto, Fujinkai was able to obtain shrimp for the upcoming May Food Fair on the last day of the shrimp season. Thirteen ladies and men gathered at the temple on very short notice to boil and peel the shrimp. It was a very good and pleasant evening! And one Food Fair task has been accomplished with everyone’s sacrifice of a Monday evening.

Our annual general meeting on January 24 will be reported in the next newsletter.

Reminder: our annual Dana Day is scheduled for Sunday, February 14 at 10:30 am. Everyone is welcome to attend.

President’s MessageToday we live in a world driven by

changing technology through the application of computers. It all started shortly after the second World War with a monstrous computer that filled many floors of a large building. After fifty years of research and development, computers are so small that they now fit into pockets of our clothing and

it appears that we cannot live without them. One of the most sophisticated of all computers is the

human brain. It was never invented but it has evolved over billions of years to regulate and control every human being. Like the computer that process information well, the brain requires good informational input and a steady energy flow from the body that is well maintained.

The wellness of everyone is a priority. To keep up with the changing world we need to be flexible and learn how to operate a computer. However, more importantly there is a need to take care of our brain and body by addressing our physical, mental and spiritual well being. We are all interconnected to the world of change and impermanence.

Star Wars and MeditationHave you seen the movie “Star Wars:

the Force Awakens”? My sons went to watch the movie on the very first day it was released and said that it was awesome. It reminds me of the time when I was about the same age as my sons about forty years ago; and I too, rushed into the theatre on the release of “Star Wars: New Hope”.

There are a couple of actors who appear in both movies with Harrison Ford being one of them. Not only an established actor, he is an experienced airplane and helicopter pilot as well. He also holds a rating to operate a jet aircraft which he uses for traveling. He is also famous person in the aviation industry. In an aviation magazine interview, Harrison describes flying air crafts like this: “The focus and the concentration and attention to detail that flying takes is a kind of meditation. I find it restful and engaging, and other things slip away”.

Especially in this digital age, surrounded by many gadgets, people always think about having a restful moment. Do we need to set up something special to get such a peaceful mind? Of course, committing to a meditation class is always a good idea. But Harrison Ford said that he can get into a meditative state by focusing on what he is doing. Does flying airplanes happen to have a similar effect that a yoga class has?

I think that any action can be meditative if you concentrate on what you are doing at that moment.

On the other hand, if you attended a business meeting or tidied up your home while checking or watching your cell phone screen, it may distract your mind. As a result, you will not see the consequence as being great or you may not feel any accomplishment.

By bringing attention to bear on what you are doing now, your whole body and mind will be aware of what is happening in front of you. Then you may discover something new even in daily domestic chores. That turns into a joyful moment and you may be in a meditative state.

So if we keep this in mind and try to experience such moment after another, by the end of the day, our minds will be in a very happy, peaceful state. Yes, meditation is not a special activity but just a matter of how we spend our daily life.

>> Sensei from P.1Let us take this moment to reflect on the Dharma

which he has left for us. In commemorating the passing of Sakyamuni Buddha, let us be mindful that the memorial service is not so much to venerate the historical being, as it is another opportunity to truly listen to the wisdom of the Buddha. Even in such a hectic world, peace and harmony can be found by awakening to the tranquility within. Namo Amida Butsu.
