Principals Message Can you believe we are in Week 3 already? One of the things I love about holidays is the freedom to do things when you want to do them. For example, when Im on holidays I tend to eat lunch when I begin to get hungry rather than at a set time of day. Being back at school forces our lives back into routine. Recess and lunch happen at a set time each day and our week is structured around a timetable that has little variation. Maths, English, Science, Sport, Chapel and the other things we do pretty much take place at the same time each week. As much as I love holidays, there is something secure about routine that can make life a little easier to manage. Once we get into the routine of waking up at a set time, getting ready for school, heading to class, sports training or music lesson at a set time each week and so on, it all just becomes habit and happens without much thought. Routines and habits can make life easy, but as I came back to school this year I was challenged about the habits and routines I actually keep. Are there healthy habits in our lives? I am sure many of us already engage in habits that look after our physical well-being. I see many mums drop their children off in the morning dressed ready to head off and do some exercise, and I am sure many of you practice healthy eating habits. But what are the habits you have in place to look after yourself spiritually? These three were suggested to me and have much merit. 1. Learn the virtue of contentment (Philippians 4:11-13). True contentment is not found in the things we possess. Paul, in Philippians, tells us he has found the secret of contentment and it is not dependant on his personal circumstances. Rather, it is found in his relationship with Jesus. Discontentment often leads to a critical spirit, while contentment leads to peace of heart and mind. 2. Acknowledge and confess sin (1 John 1:8-9). We all sin and we know we have forgiveness through Jesus, but we also want to grow into Jesus likeness. By asking him to reveal our sin to us and then confessing it we put ourselves on a road towards holiness. 3. Schedule a daily time in Gods word (Psalm 1). The Bible is like no other book. Reading it daily can transform your life in a way like no other book can. Set aside time where you can stop and peacefully meditate on Gods Word and ask God to speak to you as you do this. I hope you have all settled into the routine of being back at school. I know you would all have your own routines and habits, but if the spiritual side of your life lacks routine then I encourage you to consider adopting some of these habits into your daily routine. Just a few minutes each day can make a huge impact. Principal’s Message Can you believe we are in Week 3 already? One of the things I love about holidays is the freedom to do things when you want to do them. For example, when I’m on holidays I tend to eat lunch when I begin to get hungry rather than at a set time of day. Being back at school forces our lives back into routine. Recess and lunch happen at a set time each day and our week is structured around a timetable that has little variation. Maths, English, Science, Sport, Chapel and the other things we do pretty much take place at the same time each week. Once we get into the routine of waking up at a set time, getting ready for school, heading to class, sports training or music lesson at a set time each week and so on, it all just becomes habit and happens without much thought. Junior School News Greetings friends of Junior School. Our first Junior School camp of 2019 was an outrageous success. We had 80 of our trainee disciples make first time decisions and recommitments to follow Jesus on Thursday night. The angels were having a party and the spirit of God moved amongst the kids in a powerful way. Pastor Kirsten Long presented an excellent message and God did the rest. It was a beautiful night of prayer, worship and breakthrough. Some of our kids struggled with their first night away from home and some of the kids weren’t impressed with camp food. I am delighted to report that all of the kids that were planning on staying, with some prayers and support, overcame their fears and spent the night with their buddies. Also, unlike many previous camps, the camp food stayed in the stomachs of the kids. Praise God. Our delightful Year 2 students joined us for some desensitising and anticipation building as they toured the camp and viewed the activities and facilities. I pray that they are looking forward to their 2020 camp experience. Sleepovers and camping trips are a great way to prepare your kids for camp.

Sincere thanks to Mrs Marks for organising the administration for camp. Thanks to Mr Thomson for joining us after school and taking a group for the final session. Also congratulations and heartfelt thanks to Pastor Kirsten for her dedicated service to our community by supervising a group of kids for activities, presenting a powerful message on Thursday evening and staying the night. A wonderful anecdote from this year’s camp. My group of legends, Group 6, champions one and all, were enjoying canoeing. Half way into our session a northerly wind started to pick up. Certainly not gale force but strong enough to challenge our beginning paddlers who were trying to synchronise their strokes and steer a canoe for the first time. They got blown about 50m out of the designated area and decided to abandon ship and walk back to the staging area. The water is only knee deep. One of the camp supervisors picked them up and put them into his canoe then headed off to collect the abandoned ship. I joined the boys and took a couple with me back to shore. We then had a leisurely paddle back to the staging area. The perspectives of the boys was the funny part. One little champion stated that it was the best adventure EVER! Another boy said he didn’t like walking in the mud. My favourite response was, “We almost drowned!” Which would have been quite a feat in knee deep water with life jackets secured. Too funny. My prayer is that your child came home feeling that camp was the best adventure ever. We will do it all again this week with Years 5 & 6. Our Years 5 & 6 camp commences this Wednesday 13th February. We are expecting the same level of victory from our Years 5 & 6 students even though we do step up the fear factor with more challenging high ropes and abseiling for our upcoming Junior School leaders. Not the least of these fear factors is the two nights away from home. This is also preparation for the two night field trips to Hill End (Year 5) and Canberra (Year 6).

Last week’s Swimming Carnival and Water Fun Day were a huge success. Congratulations to Mr Knibbs and the Junior School team. Special thanks to the Secondary School PASS students that assisted on the day. The PASS students were a wonderful support to the staff and they were really encouraging towards the students. The PASS students demonstrated real pastoral care and organisational gifts, praise God. I do love the interaction and modelling of excellent Christian behaviour from the PASS students. Meet the Teacher Evening is tonight, Monday 11th February. We have two sessions starting at 6pm and 7pm, to allow our parents to divide and conquer. Please note that this is not the appropriate event for one-on-one parent teacher interviews, especially after the 6pm session, as our teachers need to reset for the 7pm session. You are most welcome, indeed encouraged, to contact the teachers directly via email and organise an individual meeting to discuss any issues or concerns. The teachers are really looking forward to sharing their vision and plans for the year. God bless, Mr Paul Marks | Head of Junior School | [email protected]

UNIFORM MANAGEMENT SYSTEM

This year we will be incorporating a new uniform management system in

Secondary School. Students have been taught the meaning of our new system

which includes, a yellow slip being given to students when they are out of uniform

and a green slip is given when they are out of uniform and have a note from a

parent.

Students with a yellow slip report to the office at the start of lunch for service duty. This may include rubbish

pickup duty, assisting maintenance in simple tasks or assisting the admin staff in clerical duties for half of lunch.

A continuation of not wearing uniform without a reasonable excuse will result in an afterschool detention.

Students who modify their uniform throughout the day such as pulling out their shirt, shortening their skirt length

by rolling at the waist or taking off their hat when playing outside, will also be given a yellow slip by staff.

Please help us by ensuring that the correct socks, skirt length and shoes are worn as they leave for school each

morning and that the boys shirts are neatly tucked in.

We strongly believe that in wearing the uniform correctly, students are representing our school to the community

positively and students are learning the importance of meeting standards and expectations, which will be

experienced in many future vocations and situations.

HEADPHONES

We have informed students this week that along with not using devices in the playground during recess and lunch

in Years 7-10, headphones are also not required at these times and between classes. We acknowledge that in

some classes teachers will use them, but it is at the teachers discretion not the students. If diagnosed sensory

issues are a reason for use of headphones, then an appropriate support plan will be given for students on a case

by case basis. We want to encourage student social interaction in the playground, rather than isolating inaction.

PEER SUPPORT

Year 11 students were presented with their Peer Support Leader badges in assembly this week as the Peer

Support Program began for 2019.

Congratulations to the following students:

Each week, the leaders will meet to prepare and train in Peer Support sessions and each fortnight will meet with

their small group of Year 7 students to explore values, build relationships and support them in their transition to

Secondary School.

KEYWORD GLOSSARY

For the HSC, NESA place great emphasis on students understanding what the verb in a question means and

applying that meaning to the question (e.g. understanding the difference between ‘explain’ and ‘define’).

To help our students in Years 7-12 develop a greater understanding of these terms, we have developed a poster

of this glossary that can be found in each classroom and also in the Student Diaries. We encourage students to

utilise this resource when they are answering questions, so they can be sure they are doing so correctly.

God bless,

Hello WCCS Community, My name is Nathan Holland, some may know me from my many different roles over the last few years at the school. This year, I have been blessed and given the honour of serving WCCS as the School Chaplain. This year, this role includes many exciting aspects of school life; firstly, our Secondary School Chapel period which will run every odd week. It has already been exciting working with a team of very keen Year 12 Prefects who include; Taylah S, Jesse I, Mikaela H, Caitlin P and Esther E. Chapel will be changing a little this year with the help of this group, and we look forward to seeing what God will do in this session every fortnight. Secondly, in Secondary School we have started a new program called Merge, which will run on the even weeks when Chapel is not running. This is a program aimed to have students choose an elective which is an interest or a passion of theirs. These electives have been offered by teachers who share this same passion. Merge is visioned to see our community come closer together through Building Relationships, Strengthening Passions and Glorifying God. I really love the scripture in 1 Peter 1:5-8 Which describes the continued growth of those who choose to seek the things of God: “…make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; and to godliness, mutual affection; and to mutual affection, love. For if you possess these qualities in increasing measure, they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ”. 1 Peter 1:5-8 Already, we are so encouraged by the overwhelming enthusiasm of our students who were running to Home Room classes to register for their choices, after introducing this new program last week. We are very excited to see what God’s plans are for both these activities this year and we continually are thankful for His faithfulness in this school. Be very blessed. TRIATHLON TRAINING On Wednesday 6th February, our triathlon team were engaged in some high quality coaching in preparation for the All-Schools Triathlon and numerous other triathlon events that occur throughout the year. Triathlon Development Officer, Robyn Low-Hart, conducted a 3-hour training course which covered everything from safety checks, riding positions, braking, gear changing, transitions and more. The students thoroughly enjoyed the experience, developed their skills and increased their confidence in their abilities which will help them in their triathlon events this year. A massive thank you to Robyn for coaching our triathletes. Mr David Thomas | Secondary School Sports Coordinator | [email protected] .edu.au
