Light is fundamental to all learning – a prerequisite in man’s development on earth

Learning is the process of understanding, selecting, interpreting and storing stimuli.Man’s ability to learn, store information and then pass it on to the followinggenerations is crucial for all development and our own evolution. Our modern, knowledgebased society poses increasingly stringent demands on installing correctartificial lighting systems to facilitate cultivation of the optimal learning environment. We thrive on solving a challenge – after all, we’re experts in this area.

Lighting and the learning process

Light is the primary conveyer of information to the body’s five senses. This is exactly the reason whystudents need correct artificial lighting in order to retain optimal focus and concentration during the

learning process and maintain a sense of wellbeing.

We always focus on the kind of activity intended for a room when considering the concept for "correctlighting". The conventional classroom is mostly used for activities that require students to do a great deal ofreading and writing, which is why we have to prioritise harmonious contrasts in a room and avoid sharp

variations between light and dark areas.

A child’s "object vocabulary" is not in general as well developed as that of an adult, so it takes longer fora child to identify an unfamiliar object. Development of the object vocabulary requires sensory stimulation

through the creation of light and shadow contrasts. This requires good modelling. The meeting pointbetween the direct modelling and indirect, contrasting lighting provides optimal lighting for learning.

Halls/corridors

The lighting along school corridors is designed to guide people, as well asprovide adequate lighting to highlight exhibitions, bulletin boards and

similar notices. Downlights with diffusers provide ideal lighting conditions incorridors, with a similar guiding effect as that of runway lights at an airport.Downlights with diffusers provide good lighting for highlighting walls as well.

Emergency exit lightingEmergency exit lighting systems for schools areextremely important and often rather complicated.Glamox’ emergency exit lighting systems allowschools to choose between a variety of systems, ranging from the simplest form of manualemergency lighting to the most advanced EIB orLonWork emergency exit lighting systems, withautomatic logs recording tests or other taskscontained in the system. Glamox also manufactures other systems that canbe monitored online by a maintenance engineeror a subcontracting firm of school caretakers.

Changes in directionChanges in direction along a corridor can bemarked either by change of pattern on thefloor/ceiling or by using lighting. A combinationof the two is most effective.

Product dataThe Zapp series is ideal for creating a sense ofrecognition and identity within a building. Zapp isavailable as recessed downlights, ceilingmountedcircular lights, suspended elliptical lights andfluorescent tubes and many different wallmountedlights, all forming part of a complete, versatilerange of lights that can be combined and used incountless different situations. This family ofproducts can be used along corridors, in commonrooms, staff rooms and toilets/cloakrooms, etc. Available light sources range from compact 13WTCD to 55W TCL light sources, as well as circularfluorescent tubes.

Classrooms – Option 1

Finally a solution which integrates lighting control within the product itself.Glamox manufactures assembly kits complete with power and telecom

outlets as well. A classroom can be fitted with telecom outlets for studentsto plug in their PCs so they can be more mobile and sit wherever they like

without cables and extensions trailing around the room – undeniably agroundbreaking solution for tomorrow’s classroom.

Blackboard lightingThe C13 is designed for lighting classroom boardsand can be mounted virtually anywhere, forinstance recessed within a Tbar ceiling system, suspended, mounted directly on to the ceiling oron walls using separately ordered mountingbrackets. The extremely efficient reflector isdesigned to provide even lighting over the entireboard.

Control systemsTwo control systems can be integrated with theMentor system: one fullyintegrated system (DSISmart) controlling 4 ballasts or a larger systemcontrolling up to 20 ballasts (SmartDim SM). Bothsystems have builtin motion sensors, daylightsensors and an IR receiver facilitating remotecontrol. Control parameters can be downloadedby using a special remote control.

Product dataThe Mentor system consists of four units of differentlength, manufactured in extruded aluminium. These can be interconnected by means of anextension kit. The units are available as either oneor twocell louvres for 28W or 35/49W lampswith one lamp per cell, and also as blackboardlighting with an asymmetric reflector for a T5 lightsource. The control sensors, computer and poweroutlets can be easily integrated by simply lifting upthe lid between the optics and fitting the lid withthe desired parts. Uplight/downlight distributionhere is 50/50, which is ideal lighting forproviding contrast as well as direct lighting forclose work. The housing is available in naturaland whitepainted aluminium.

When a ceiling is very low and prevents the use of suspended luminaires, these might just as well be recessed into the ceiling itself. The Frame range

of luminaires is famous for easy mounting, requiring no tools or brackets, and for its effective optics. Glamox’ SoftLight (SL) optics provide pleasantlighting, with soft transitions between light and shadow. Additional lightfrom the classroom walls is a welcome additional benefit and improves

contrasts within the room.

Detector controlElectricity consumption for lighting can be reducedby as much as 40% by using movement detectorsin the classroom. However, a classroom makesconsiderable demands on a detector, as thenumber of people in a room can vary byanywhere from 2 to 30 people, and are often(e.g. during exams) fairly inactive. A practicalalternative in such cases could be to useultrasound or microwave detectors.

Product dataThe recessed Frame (FRR) was designedexclusively for mounting in an exposed Tgridceiling. This features effective optics as well asbeing an extremely good, costeffective solution asno tools or brackets are required in mounting. Thisframe is available as 300 x 600, 600 x 600 or300 x 1200 modules, constructed for 1 to 4 tubes(3 or 4 tubes available only for the 600 x 600module). The housing is finished as a singlesection with no visible seams, resulting in anexclusive finish and an attractive surfaceintegrating discreetly with the ceiling. FRR is alsoavailable in a plastic opaque or double prismatic

The height of a ceiling will sometimes prevent the use of 50% uplight, even though pendant luminaires were the optimal choice. A variety of

luminaires with 10 – 30% uplight can be suspended 25 – 50cm from theceiling without causing any irritating glare on the ceiling. The FRP is an

elegant luminaire, with 20% uplight, and features the soothing, nonglareSoftLight (SL) optics downward.

Lighting on peopleTheatres and the television / film industries have always stressed the importance of communicatorsbeing properly illuminated, and all the facts seem to point to this being the case with teacher/pupilsituations. Current lighting philosophy seems to be extolling the virtues of saving electricity to such anextent that lighting vertical surfaces often ends up as a low priority. Light is directed down on the worksurface – where it serves its purpose. But the result here is that the teacher’s face is often shadowed andout of focus. By highlighting the teacher, focus is then on the communicator and good eye contact issustained, resulting in better communication between teachers and students.Glamox has acquired a great deal of lighting expertise through its work on developing a speciallighting solution for video conference rooms, which in turn yields clearcut benefits and assists withlearningconditions in schools.

Product dataThe pendant luminaire (FRP) with direct/indirectillumination features a streamlined and functionaldesign. The luminaire can be mounted using thequick adjustment wire system or a pendant tube. Avariety of optics can be used, although theglamoxized SoftLight (SL) optics come highlyrecommended for use in classrooms. The SoftLight(SL) optics provide pleasant lighting, with softtransitions between light and shadow. Thisluminaire can also be mounted on the ceilingwithout uplight (FRS).

Auditorium

An auditorium has essentially the same lighting needs as an ordinary classroom, although downlights arefrequently used on account of a high ceiling. Wallrecessed luminaires are also worthwhile here in order to

illuminate the auditorium’s ceiling and walls. Mounting most of the lights within easy reach will simplifymaintenance. In auditoriums, vertical lighting on the lecturer is especially important, because the considerable

distances here and use of downlights as the primary lighting source means that a lecturer can easily end upspeaking from the shadows.

Common rooms

A common room is where students gather to socialize and relax, it’s aroom where students can discuss a lecture over coffee or just philosophizeabout life in general. The lighting here should diverge from the one in aclassroom – it should instead create a laidback atmosphere, encouragingstudents to meet there and have a chat. Large pendant luminaires, wall luminaires and splashes of indirect light areall effective when mounted within same area, as in a large hotel lobby, only on a slightly smaller scale.

15

Multifunction rooms

Pulses race, whistles blow – gym and handball are to be played today. The secondyears are having a party in here tomorrow and then there’s the

school’s Christmas party here in December. These are typical events aschool will hold in the school gym nowadays. And forwardlooking light

planning using modern light control systems will provide the school with amodern lighting system enabling them to arrange all kinds of school events

in the gym.

Uni2 SThe S in UNI2 S stands for sport. That’s not becausethis luminaire looks particularly sporty, but becauseit gives the best lighting in a sports hall or gymand, most importantly, it has been tested andcomplies with German ball test standard DIN 5771013, which is the most stringent standard inEurope for testing mechanical strength and resilience.

16

Restaurants

A restuarant has many of the same functions as a common room, but theceiling height is usually lower and there are more chairs in the room. Thismeans that fewer suspended or ceilingmounted/ recessed lights arerequired. The room’s lighting must create a change of atmosphere from theclassroom. One good solution is to use downlights, decorative pendantluminaires and wallmounted luminaires. Pictures on the walls are shownup by uplights. A school restaurant can broaden its range of uses if lightdimming/light control is considered at an early stage.

17

Art rooms

When daylight dwindles, it is important to replace the light effectively.Modelling lights are important to have when you are drawing, moulding

or painting. We have to see shadows and highlights as this providessubstance to flat surfaces and creates curves and volume. We recommend

the same kind of luminaire for art rooms that are actually speciallydesigned for use in video conferences. By directing the light from a large

surface, we get the most natural result possible.

18

Workshops

Concentration. See how deep you have drilled the hole or whether youhave planed away the right amount. Bright light, and the right kind oflight, are absolutely crucial for students to master the skills required for thiskind of precision work. The housing must also be able to withstand beingknocked around and easy to dismantle and remount if real damage doesoccur.

18

The GIR T5 or T8With the GIR T5 and T8, Glamox is setting a newstandard in terms of versatility and simpleinstallation. The housing can be mounted on awire, suspended directly from the ceiling, mounted on the wall or on 230V "easy" tracks. The same luminaire can be used for ceilingsranging between 2.5 and 10 metres in height byalternating between low, medium and high lampposition. Available as a simple singletubeluminaire to a "light bomb" containing threefluorescent tubes and emitting up to 12,000lumens.
