On Friday 18th May rediscover Liverpool with your friends and family, as the city is illuminated with unexpected happenings for a spectacular night to remember.

From 4pm until late LightNight unlocks the doors of our world-class museums, galleries and heritage sites; staging over 70 free events to inspire and delight visitors of all ages.

Discover exhibitions, choirs, and open studios, creative workshops and futuristic robots, plus there’s dazzling projections to see, powerful photography, cycling trails and theatrical tales - you won’t want to miss a thing! Walk the candle-lit labyrinth at sunset and be part of a mass sing-along – there is something for everyone.

It’s the perfect excuse, if ever you needed one, to get out and explore the arts and heritage of our city, which is on offer all year round.

You can use this programme to circle your must-see events or follow one of the Recommended Routes, which you can find at www.lightnightliverpool.co.uk We’ve also included a free map to help you plan your night.

Come and enjoy the gigantic gently moving and peaceful kaleidoscopic images created from photographic fragments of the Metropolitan Cathedral’s beautiful stained glass, projected onto the rear of the cathedral. LightNight at the Open Eye Gallery 19 Mann Island, Liverpool Waterfront, L3 1BP16.00 — 22.00

Emily Speed: Nothing is finished, Nothing is perfect, Nothing lastsLiverpool-based artist Emily Speed has created a new installation for Open Eye’s facade which takes the folded shape of the wall and adds a layer to it, transforming the appearance of the wall into a giant, creased piece of paper. Just turn up!

Richard Mosse: Infra A new body of work by photographer Richard Mosse made in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Mosse documents the landscape of an emerging conflict using a discontinued military surveillance, a type of film called Kodak Aerochrome, which registers a spectrum of light invisible to the human eye as bright pinks and crimsons. Just turn up!

Simon Norfolk: For Most Of It I Have No Words A photographic portrait of twentieth century sites of genocide. The series moves back through time, capturing an array of events as the physical reminders of atrocity disappear from the landscape. Just turn up!

For one night only, step back in time and join Tate Liverpool for this special event, featuring workshops, music, dancing and film inspired by 1920s – 40s Hollywood glamour. Visitors are encouraged to dress up and celebrate this era, with a prize for the best-dressed person. With themed cocktails and food in the cafe. Just turn up!

DLA Piper Series: This is Sculpture 16.00 — 21.00

A fresh look at modern and contemporary sculpture. Created in collaboration with celebrated figures from the world of culture, the display includes rooms co-curated by artist Michael Craig-Martin and hat designer Philip Treacy. Renowned singer-songwriter and actress Marianne Faithful is the latest co-curator to work on the display, with her contribution Period Piece opening on the 21 April 2012. Highlights include works by Francis Bacon, William Blake and Lucien Freud. Just turn up!

Galápagos The Bluecoat School Lane, L1 3BX16.00 — 22.00

Over 5 years, 12 artists visited these beguiling islands returning with film footage, drawings, photographs, sculptures and sounds. The resulting exhibition offers a surprising insight into the human stories and the living laboratory of Galápagos. On the top floor find the first of the Bluecoat’s creative community exhibitions reflecting on ‘the Void’. A Latino Oceanic menu complements the exhibition and families can enjoy the Tortoise Trail. Just turn up!

An exhibition of work by local and national artists who encompass an eclectic range of styles and mediums including painting, drawing, print and textiles. Live music, licensed bar, plenty of parking and everyone welcome! Located near Cains Brewery. Just turn up!

The Spaces Between Unit C7 Albert Dock, L3 4BB16.00 — 22.00

Wendy Williams’s installation of hundreds of paper houses represents an imagined regeneration of the derelict terraces in Ducie Street and nearby areas. Jacqueline F. Kerr’s work employs collage to create mix media depictions of a building or place, real or imaginary, relating to the renaissance ‘ideal city’. Just turn up!

Polly Morgan — Live and Stuffing! Victoria Gallery & Museum University of Liverpool, Ashton St, Off Brownlow Hill, L69 3DR19.00 — 20.30

Dubbed ‘Britain’s hottest bird stuffer’ by Banksy and Tim Marlow’s nomination for best up-and-coming artist, Polly Morgan demonstrates her unique taxidermy within the neo-gothic splendour of the Victoria Gallery & Museum. Surrounded by Victorian bottled creatures and ornithological paintings, the VG&M is a veritable cabinet of curiosities! Café offers on the night. Just turn up!

Join in with BBC Radio Merseyside’s Simon Hoban and his listeners to sing with the brilliant Sense of Sound. Simon’s Singers give you a taste of The Big Voice, which takes place at Liverpool Anglican Cathedral (19.30 – 21.00) when everybody is invited to sing with Sense of Sound on a grand scale!
