LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

Miami has recently become my home away from home—and I don’t mind it one bit. Even though I am there on business, I’ve found that sneaking to the beach just before sunset and putting my toes in sand makes me feel like I am on a fabulous beach vacation, even if just for a minute.

The design energy in Miami is rejuvenating. Multi-million dollar con-dos are being built and sold at rapid rates, and the city is undergoing incredible expansion due to the interest in investment properties from Russian and South American buyers. When it became time to decide where to open the next extension of the Ligné brand, Ligné Atelier, Miami was the natural choice.

This issue is dedicated to the arts and culture of Miami, and every-thing about the city that makes it one of the hottest international spots in the country. We gear up for our Ligné Atelier launch during Art Basel with a look into the city’s top galleries and all of the hot spots to hit for great design and fabulous cocktails, in true Miami style. I am also thrilled that the beautiful and exceptionally talented Ivanka Trump shares her top 10 must haves in Lust List. As the head of design for Trump Hotel Collections, she knows a thing or two about high style!

Enjoy this issue of Ligné Magazine, and we will see you in Miami!

In an industry where copies run rampant and

original ideas are few and far between, designers

like Laura Byford and Carol Veronique, the design

duo behind Malibu based Byford and Veronique,

are like a breath of fresh air. When they described

their work to me, I was intrigued. When I finally

had the chance to see their first collection, I was

floored. Their technique has allowed even the

most intricate patterns (think vintage lace) to be

captured forever in metal.

“With our beautiful concept of mixing natural

textures, coated with resins and liquid metals

including white bronze crocodile skins, rose gold

shagreen effects and many more, we hope to

have captured the imagination and interest of

renowned designers from all over the world and

we continue to experience a rapid sales growth

and global expansion of our brand,” explains

Byford. Their first collection launched in the spring

of 2014 with coffee and side tables, as well as an

outdoor bench in microcement. In the fall, we can

expect to see their outdoor collection expand into

seating, and also the availability of their specialty

metalwork to be seen in wall panels and tiles. An

entire kitchen backsplash in their rose gold Divine,

or a fireplace in their deeply cracked Bonneville?

Now we are talking. See more about Byford and

Veronique, browse their selection of finishes and

find showrooms at www.byfordandveronique.com.

Known for his inimitable ability to provide

modern lighting remedies to the glaring lack of

authentic illumination options, award winning

product designer Jonathan Browning is

revealing an entirely different creative side.

The lighting connoisseur has unveiled his first

collection of rugs, created in collaboration with

Vaheed Taheri, whose San Francisco based firm

is esteemed for its exquisite productions of

handmade Tibetan carpet.

Browning and Taheri’s partnership was

born out of a shared obsession with quality

craftsmanship and as it turns out, a mutual love

for traveling. The collection consists of ten new

exquisite designs with distinctive details. Each

and every rug shares a different story generated

from Browning’s extensive travels, appreciation

of classic art works and love for ancient designs.

“Travel has always been integral to my design

and production process,” said Browning. “For

instance, a particular rug in this collection

is completely inspired by my time spent in

Morocco, where a palace was covered in the

most ornate carved plaster work I had ever seen.

I lifted one exact pattern and let that be the

basis for the rug.”

Browning’s intricacies in design has not always

been merely devoted to products, He was

first and foremost an interior designer. After

serving as Senior Vice President of designing for

Starwood Hotels—where he was responsible for

the decor of W, Westin, and St. Regis—Browning

has devoted the past 10 years to producing

lighting that employ techniques that have

remain unchanged since the 18th century.

This obsession with quality—almost to an

unhealthy degree—is what brought Browning

and Taheri together for this collaboration.

Two contemporary designers who celebrate

industrial precision.

“I believe that rugs are art for the floor and

should be treated like art, and it is undoubted

that Browning has this way of treating every

design as art. This shared approach is what

made the rug collection what it is—creative and

inspired.” states Taheri.

In a way that only Browning can achieve, each

rug pulls from Browning’s wealth of inspiration,

from trips to Morocco to a Van Gogh painting.

The collection captures a regal yet dynamic look

that blends beautiful wool with wild silk.

“I have traveled to countries such as Nepal, India

and Turkey to learn techniques from people that

have been weaving carpet for generations. Most

people don’t get such an opportunity to get

close to the daily life of the people who make

these rugs, it is a life story and I decided to be a

story teller,” said Taheri, “Through this collection

I was able to help Browning tell his.”

Caroline Vreeland hails from one of the greatest fashion icons of all time. The great granddaughter of legendary Vogue editor Diana Vreeland, Caroline has taken this creative legacy and channeled it through song. Caroline’s unique sound is ethereal. She describes her music as “...almost nervous and always filled with a doomed magic.” Her lyrics are evocative in a way that entices listeners to revel in their own angst—constantly exploring the dichotomy between sex and darkness.

Tens of thousands of followers across her various social media platforms emulate her style and cling to her every lyric. She is effortlessly stylish with a hint of rebellion. Diana once famously said, “There’s only one very good life, and that’s the life you make for yourself.” That’s exactly what Caroline Vreeland is doing through her style and art.

“Fashion for me is what makes me feel pretty and comfortable at the same time; which is not always an easy task. I’ve always loved to mix and match, and this outfit is an example of that. Wearing high-end designer mixed with high-street style. I like to find versatile pieces that I can use in different outfits, for shopping, a night out, or going to a museum—as seen here. I then add shoes, a bag, and finally accessorize, accessorize, accessorize depending on where I’ll be going.”

“For the hottest trends in fashion, I believe in sticking with classics starting with jewelry, like the Love bracelet from Cartier and Van Cleef and Arpels’ Alhambra earrings. Pertaining to dressing, I love local designers like Golondrina. Her dresses are the best secret and her items translate from day to night. A Bottega Veneta large Cabat bag is also a must, paired with a metallic Bottega sandal.”

“I loved the indigo blue tones that permeated many of the men’s collections this summer and I was happy to see that variations of that color are making a significant splash this fall as well. “In Miami, fall trends are always tailored a bit to fit the still-humid temps and colorful landscape. But with this season’s bright and bold shades that we saw at Dior, Altuzarra, Thakoon, and Emanuel Ungaro, we can rock the looks straight from the runway. Interiors are soften-ing up as of late, as new builds have partnered with a slew of notable designers who are modernizing the typical uber-slick Miami style with an eco-chic edge. Gone are the days of all-white, lacquered finishes as Thom Filicia brings his contemporary beachy vibe to Biscayne Beach and Debora Aguiar’s concept of bringing the outside in fills units at 1 Hotel & Homes South Beach, Marea, and Hyde Hollywood.”

“This fall, Miami will be seeing pops of color mixed with the season’s usual dark hues. Think pastels, prints, and lots of gold mixed with neutrals. My absolute favorite fall look would have to be a printed or gold dress paired with a black leather jacket or blazer. Throw on a glamorous statement cuff or necklace and a chic pair of low-heeled booties, and you’ll be right on trend with the fashionistas in the Magic City!”

SOFIA JOELSSON TURNS TWO OCEANSIDE PENTHOUSES INTO ONE SPRAWLING OASIS

A penthouse with incredible ocean views and a bright contemporary interior perfect for entertaining and watching the sunset on the terrace—now that is luxurious living in Miami. When it comes to the highly coveted international style Miami is known for, Sofia Joelsson knows how to get the look. Her international client base seeks her designs for their open layouts, bright accents and innate ability to make a space ultra-contemporary without losing the comfort.

The Capri Marina Grande was no exception. The clients wanted a modern Italian look and feel, with large open spaces suited for entertaining family and friends—naturally taking advantage of the spectacular 270 degree views of the ocean and downtown Miami. Originally two penthouses, Joelsson had the task of merging them into one seamless space with 3 bedrooms and 3 1/2 baths.

Design features include linear lighting in the hallways, bespoke lighting designs, upholstery by Minotti and custom furniture by Joelsson throughout the living room and bedrooms. Every detail of the master bath was created to accent the tub and take advantage of the expansive views. Wrap around wood detailing is used on the walls and frame of the tub while mirrors on the wall reflect the water and add sex appeal.

“The most incredible aspect of this project was the terrace. It is the perfect place to have a cocktail and watch the sunset over downtown Miami at the end of the day,” quotes Joelsson.

“Although we had to use a crane to bring up all of the outdoor furniture that was way too large for the elevators!”

ISSUE XI LIGNÉ MAGAZINEǀ 75

WYNWOODEdgy, dynamic, and creative–Wynwood is the new

nexus of Miami’s art and social scene. What was once

a blighted area of abandoned warehouses and facto-

ries is now the new home of the creative class thanks

to late developer Tony Goldman and his company,

Goldman Properties. Goldman was a visionary entre-

preneur with experience developing blighted areas,

like New York’s Soho and Miami’s South Beach, into

hip and world-renowned destinations. His passion for

redevelopment inspired him to evolve Wynwood from

a derelict district into a live/work/play neighborhood

focused on street art and culture.

In 2009, Goldman and curator Jeffrey Deitch first

introduced Wynwood Walls, a “museum of the

streets,” with a focus on street art murals. The sen-

sational work spurred the completion of many street

art murals throughout Wynwood, bestowing the

area with the status of being the hippest and most

creative neighborhood in Miami. In addition to Wyn-

wood Walls, Goldman Properties still maintains the

momentum of commercial development in Wynwood.

Owning over 25 commercial properties, like The

Wynwood Building, The Wynwood House, and their

famous restaurants, Wynwood Kitchen+Bar and Jo-

ey’s, Goldman Properties chooses to focus on devel-

oping business and retail spaces that can strengthen

the artistic atmosphere of the neighborhood. Since

its inception, Wynwood Walls has become the iconic

symbol of Wynwood as a creative neighborhood that

is currently in rapid revitalization efforts to bring in

more business and even more residents.

art as revitalization

Page 78: Ligné Magazine | Issue XI | The Miami Issue

ISSUE XI LIGNÉ MAGAZINEǀ76

In comparison to other newly developed Miami neighborhoods, like

Brickell where high-rise condo buildings and luxury businesses have

become the neighborhood’s personality, Goldman Properties’ Managing

Director, Joseph Furst, doesn’t see Wynwood becoming gentrified in a

similar sense. “The lifestyle may evolve and become more high-end but

there will always be a focus on entrepreneurs and local creatives. It is

important to keep the soul of the place,” says Furst, “Wynwood is Miami’s

home of the creative class in any medium. Art is the vocabulary for the

neighborhood.” According to Furst, Goldman Properties’ focus is on

reusing and adapting existing spaces in Wynwood to include commercial

and residential space while maintaining a human scaleable environment

fit for the area. “The goal is to keep the area pedestrian friendly with

about five-to-eight story mixed-use infill,” states Furst.

The street art of Wynwood lends itself to the neighborhood’s existing

architecture. Much different from the glass towers popping up across

Miami, the existing low-rise warehouses of Wynwood are exterior

canvases for the culture and it is important for new development to

maintain that culture. This is something that developers Bradley Carlson

and David Polinsky of Fortis Development Group took into consideration

when developing 250 Wynwood, the first approved new construction

condo building in the neighborhood. As their slogan inspires “Home

is where the ART is,” 250 Wynwood is an innovative concept in that

the architecture includes street art, which wraps and fills the building’s

surface, as a design choice. “Our building reflects the simple boxiness of

the surrounding warehouse structures, and also incorporates beautiful

street art, one of Wynwood’s hallmarks,” explains Carlson.

While Wynwood is growing with retail, design shops, galleries, and dining,

the area is slow with residential development due to existing residential

zoning restrictions. These zoning restrictions are being challenged by

developers like Goldman Properties and Fortis Development Group and

small gains are being won. Currently, Fortis Development Group is in the

process of planning a near future development in a land parcel adjacent

to 250 Wynwood. “As a former New Yorker, Wynwood feels similar

to the neighborhoods I know and love--like the Meatpacking District,

Soho, and Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Wynwood is an exciting place, prime

for carefully-planned, beautifully designed, urban infill development,”

explains Carlson. “We will start to see small-scale, low-rise residential

development that is sensitive to to the area’s creative vibe and preserves

the neighborhood’s best characteristics, such as warehouses wrapped in

mural arts.”

Britto Central Gallery on acclaimed Lincoln Road in South Beach, Miami offers fine art to collectors across the globe. Amongst the art are formal displays, photos, memorabilia and perhaps a stray paintbrush, which provide a glimpse into Romero Britto’s creative world. It is here where a talented artist, whose history is dedicated to the play of vibrant colors, finds a home in which his art drapes every surface for not just a few, but the joy of everyone.

Born in Brazil, Romero Britto came to the United States in 1983 seeking new experiences that he might integrate into his art. He has stayed faithful to his belief that his artistic efforts be shared with others and enjoyed by many. Today, Britto’s work is collected and shown around the world, from Asia to South America and across Europe. Yet 20 years later, Britto Central Gallery remains the home where the first strokes of color manifest his vision.
