holiness of God .

— R . C . S P R O U L

Dear Friend, Please allow

me to take this opportunity

to welcome you to Ligonier Ministries’ 22nd annual national

conference. Once more we are privileged to experience our unity

in Christ as we fellowship with one another and hear the teaching

of Scripture. Let us enjoy this opportunity to come together in

our common faith as we represent different churches and places.

This year we are revisiting a theme that is near and dear to

us all because it is one of the central affi rmations of God’s Word.

The majestic holiness of God will be the focus of our study as we

seek to understand this vital truth in order that our lives might

be transformed for His glory. After some important sessions

on the lasting infl uence of John Calvin, we will proceed to our

conference theme. Our speakers will concentrate on the defi nition

of holiness and how it is to be applied to our family worship, our

understanding of the work of Christ, the ministry of the Holy

Spirit, sanctifi cation, and several other topics. Many of you may

be hearing of these things for the fi rst time, and we pray that

these truths will transform your lives and renew your minds as

they have done for countless others. May we be refreshed

and renewed during this special time. Please join me in praying

that the Holy Spirit will illumine our

study of Scripture and motivate us to

worship our Creator, whose holiness

we are to refl ect in all that we do.

In Christ,

welcome

S P E C I A L G U E S T S

If we are in Christ, we have been awakened

already. We have been raised from spiritual death

unto spiritual life. But we still have “sleepers” in

our eyes, and at times we walk about like zombies.

We retain a certain fear of drawing near to God.

We still tremble at the foot of His holy mountain.

Yet as we grow in our knowledge of Him, we gain

a deeper love for His purity and sense a deeper

dependence upon His grace. We learn that He

is altogether worthy of our adoration. The fruit

of our growing love for Him is the increase

of reverence for His name. We love Him now

because we see His loveliness. We adore Him now

because we see His majesty. We obey Him now

because His Holy Spirit dwells within us. He is

holy, holy, holy....

The Attributes of God B Y R . C . S P R O U L

There are many “gods” falsely so called, but there is only one true God, and the Bible tells us about Him. Scripture de-scribes God’s character — His attributes — from Genesis to Revelation. In this series, Dr. Sproul looks at several of God’s unchanging attributes, explaining how an understanding of God’s character drives us to deeper reverence and awe.

In 1971, as it is today, the world was fi lled with challenges to biblical faith.

Christians who sought to be equipped to answer these challenges had few options

short of going to seminary. R.C. Sproul saw the need to offer an accessible, practical

bridge of learning for the growing Christian. Thus, Ligonier Ministries was born.

Ligonier’s educational mission continues today with a new place for learning

devoted to serving both laymen and pastors, eventually offering a number of

All Glory, Laud and HonorAll glory, laud, and honor to thee, Redeemer, King, to whom the lips of children made sweet hosannas ring! Thou art the King of Israel, thou David’s royal Son, who in the Lord’s name comest, the King and blessed One!

The people of the Hebrews with palms before thee went; our praise and prayer and anthems before thee we present: to thee, before thy passion, they sang their hymns of praise; to thee, now high exalted, our melody we raise.

Thou didst accept their praises; accept the prayers we bring, who in all good delightest, thou good and gracious King! All glory, laud, and honor to thee, Redeemer, King, to whom the lips of children made sweet hosannas ring!

Praise to the Lord! O let all that is in me adore him! All that hath life and breath, come now with praises before him! Let the amen sound from his people again; Gladly fore'er we adore him.

Let Children Hear the Mighty DeedsLet children hear the mighty deeds which God performed of old; which in our younger years we saw, and which our fathers told.

He bids us make his glories known, his works of pow’r and grace; and we’ll convey his wonders down through ev’ry rising race.

Our lips shall tell them to our sons, and they again to theirs; that generations yet unborn may teach them to their heirs.

Thus shall they learn in God alone their hope securely stands, that they may ne’er forget his works, but practice his commands.

Holy God, We Praise Your NameHoly God, we praise your name; Lord of all, we bow before you; all on earth your scepter claim, all in heav’n above adore you. Infi nite your vast domain, everlasting is your reign.

Hark, the loud celestial hymn angel choirs above are raising; cherubim and seraphim in unceasing chorus praising, fi ll the heav’ns with sweet accord: “Holy, holy, holy Lord.”

Lo! the apostolic train join your sacred name to hallow; prophets swell the glad refrain, and the white-robed martyrs follow; and from morn to set of sun, through the church the song goes on.

Holy Father, Holy Son, Holy Spirit, Three we name you; while in essence only One, undivided God we claim you, and adoring bend the knee, while we sing this mystery.

Holy, Holy, Holy!Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty! Early in the morning our song shall rise to thee. Holy, holy, holy! Merciful and mighty! God in three Persons, blessed Trinity!

Holy, holy, holy! All the saints adore thee, casting down their golden crowns around the glassy sea; cherubim and seraphim falling down before thee, who wert, and art, and evermore shalt be.

Holy, holy, holy! Though the darkness hide thee, though the eye of sinful man thy glory may not see, only thou art holy; there is none beside thee perfect in pow’r, in love, and purity.

Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty! All thy works shall praise thy name in earth and sky and sea. Holy, holy, holy! Merciful and mighty! God in three Persons, blessed Trinity!

Glory to the Holy OneRefrain: Holy, holy, holy, cried the seraph throng;Glory to the Holy One, Is the angel’s song. Seated on the ether throne, Above all mortal view;the King supreme in glory sat, Bathed in refulgent hue; Refrain

All around the mercy seat, the winged creatures sang;Glory to our God on high, Their poignant anthem rang. Refrain

With shielded eyes and covered feet, The angels hovered high; While glory shook the portal walls, And smoke rose to the sky. Refrain

Woe is me, the creature wailed, His face upon the fl oor; With dirty lips and loath-some tongue, His heart could stand no more. Refrain

Come, angel quick and purge my lips, make pure my soul anew; And I shall rise and stand again, and I will go for You. Refrain

Fairest Lord JesusFairest Lord Jesus, Ruler of all nature, Son of God and Son of Man! Thee will I cherish, thee will I honor, thou, my soul’s glory, joy, and crown.

Fair are the meadows, fair are the woodlands, robed in the blooming garb of spring: Jesus is fairer, Jesus is purer, who makes the woeful heart to sing.

Fair is the sunshine, fair is the moonlight, and all the twinkling, starry host: Jesus shines brighter, Jesus shines purer than all the angels heav’n can boast.

Beautiful Savior! Lord of the nations! Son of God and Son of Man! Glory and honor, praise, adoration, now and forevermore be thine.

Gracious Spirit, Dwell with MeGracious Spirit, dwell with me: I myself would gracious be; and with words that help and heal would thy life in mine reveal; and with actions bold and meek would for Christ my Savior speak.

Truthful Spirit, dwell with me: I myself would truthful be; and with wisdom kind and clear let thy life in mine appear; and with actions brotherly speak my Lord’s sincerity.

Mighty Spirit, dwell with me: I myself would mighty be; mighty so as to prevail where unaided man must fail; ever by a mighty hope pressing on and bearing up.

Holy Spirit, dwell with me: I myself would holy be; separate from sin, I would choose and cherish all things good, and whatever I can be, give to him who gave me thee!

Breathe on me, Breath of GodBreathe on me, Breath of God, fi ll me with life anew, that I may love what thou dost love, and do what thou wouldst do.

Breathe on me, Breath of God, until my heart is pure, until my will is one with thine, to do and to endure.

Breathe on me, Breath of God, till I am wholly thine, until this earthly part of me glows with thy fi re divine.

Breathe on me, Breath of God, so shall I never die, but live with thee the perfect life of thine eternity.

All People That On Earth Do DwellAll people that on earth do dwell, sing to the Lord with cheerful voice; him serve with fear, his praise forthtell, come ye before him and rejoice.

The Lord ye know is God indeed; without our aid he did us make; we are his folk, he doth us feed, and for his sheep he doth us take.

O enter then his gates with praise, approach with joy his courts unto; praise, laud, and bless his name always, for it is seemly so to do.

For why? The Lord our God is good, his mercy is forever sure; his truth at all times fi rmly stood, and shall from age to age endure.

Praise to the Lord, the AlmightyPraise to the Lord, the Almighty, the King of creation! O my soul, praise him, for he is thy health and salvation! All ye who hear, now to his temple draw near, Join me in glad adoration.

Praise to the Lord, who o’er all things so wondrously reigneth, Shelters thee under his wings, yea, so gently sustaineth! Hast thou not seen how thy desires e’er have been Granted in what he ordaineth?

Praise to the Lord, who doth prosper thy work and defend thee! Surely his goodness and mercy here daily attend thee; Ponder anew what the Almighty will do, If with his love he befriend thee.

Praise to the Lord, who with marvelous wisdom hath made thee, Decked thee with health, and with loving hand guided and stayed thee. How oft in grief hath not he brought thee relief, Spreading his wings to o’ershade thee!

Praise to the Lord! O let all that is in me adore him! All that hath life and breath, come now with praises before him! Let the amen sound from his people again; Gladly fore’er we adore him.

How Great Thou ArtO Lord my God, when I in awesome wonder consider all the worlds thy hands have made, I see the stars, I hear the rolling thunder, thy pow’r thro’out the universe displayed.

Refrain: Then sings my soul, my Savior God, to thee: how great thou art, how great thou art! Then sings my soul, my Savior God, to thee: how great thou art, how great thou art!

When thro’ the woods and forest glades I wander and hear the birds sing sweetly in the trees, when I look down from lofty mountain grandeur, and hear the brook and feel the gentle breeze; Refrain

And when I think that God, his Son not sparing, sent him to die, I scarce can take it in, that on the cross, my burden gladly bearing, he bled and died to take away my sin. Refrain

When Christ shall come with shout of acclamation and take me home, what joy shall fi ll my heart! Then I shall bow in humble adoration, and there proclaim, my God, how great thou art. Refrain

All Creatures of Our God and KingAll creatures of our God and King, lift up your voice and with us sing alleluia, alleluia! Thou burning sun with golden beam, thou silver moon with softer gleam,

Refrain: O praise him, O praise him, alleluia, alleluia, alleluia!

Thou rushing wind that art so strong, ye clouds that sail in heaven along, O praise him, alleluia! Thou rising morn in praise rejoice, ye lights of evening, fi nd a voice, Refrain

Thou fl owing water, pure and clear, make music for thy Lord to hear, alleluia, alleluia! Thou fi re so masterful and bright, that givest man both warmth and light, Refrain

And all ye men of tender heart, forgiving others, take your part, O sing ye, alleluia! Ye who long pain and sorrow bear, praise God and on him cast your care, Refrain

Let all things their Creator bless, and worship him in humbleness, O praise him, alleluia! Praise, praise the Father, praise the Son, and praise the Spirit, three in one, Refrain

Lift High the CrossRefrain: Lift high the cross, the love of Christ proclaim, till all the world adore his sacred name.

Come, brethren, follow where our Savior trod, Our King victorious, Christ, the Son of God. Refrain

Led on their way by this triumphant sign, the hosts of God in conqu’ring ranks combine. Refrain

O Lord, once lifted on the glorious tree, as thou hast promised, draw men unto thee. Refrain

Thy kingdom come, that earth’s despair may cease beneath the shadow of its healing peace. Refrain

For thy blest cross which doth for us atone, creation’s praises rise before thy throne. Refrain

When I Survey the Wondrous CrossWhen I survey the wondrous cross on which the Prince of glory died, My richest gain I count but loss, and pour contempt on all my pride.

Forbid it, Lord, that I should boast, save in the death of Christ my God: All the vain things that charm me most, I sacrifi ce them to his blood.

See, from his head, his hands, his feet, sorrow and love fl ow mingled down: Did e’er such love and sorrow meet, or thorns compose so rich a crown?

Were the whole realm of nature mine, that were a present far too small; Love so amazing, so divine, demands my soul, my life, my all.

Clothed in RighteousnessRefrain: Clothe us in Your righteousness, hide fi lthy rags of sin. Dress us in Your perfect garb, both outside and within. Fallen race in Eden fair, exposed and full of shame. Fled we naked from the sight, far from Thy holy name. Refrain

Sent from the garden to the east, outside of Eden’s gate. Banished there from Thy pure light, were Adam and his mate. Refrain

Scarlet souls are now like snow by Thy atoning grace. Crimson hearts become like wool for Adam’s fallen race. Refrain

No work of ours is good enough for evil to atone. Your merit, Lord, is all we have. It saves, and it alone! Refrain

Hallelujah! ChorusHallelujah!

For the Lord God Omnipotent reigneth.

The kingdom of this world Is become the kingdom of our Lord And of His Christ; And He shall reign forever and ever.

King of Kings, and Lord of Lords.

Hallelujah!

An Over view of What We Do

Produce and Broadcast Teaching Resources In an engaging and practical style, R.C. Sproul’s audio and video messages explore a wide variety of subjects covering the Bible, theology, philosophy, apologetics, ethics, and church history. We have more than 300 series available. Some of these messages are featured on our daily international radio and Internet broadcast, Renewing Your Mind.

Publish and Promote Good Books In our day there is no shortage of books and information, but not everything is edifying. We want to produce Christian literature that endures. Whether it is a book from a contemporary author, or a voice from the past, it is our aim to be a trustworthy guide to the life-changing truths of the historic Christian faith.

Publish Tabletalk, Our Monthly Magazine Each month, more than 200,000 readers pick up Tabletalk to find the encouragement that comes from the study of God’s Word.

Publish The Reformation Study Bible It’s been called “the gold standard for study Bibles.” For more than a decade, serious Bible students have turned to the thousands of study notes created by more than 50 evangelical scholars.

Create Beaut i fu l Music We believe creativity and excellence in the arts are vital parts of our Christian witness. We hope our recordings will inspire others to use their gifts to the fullest and to cherish all of God’s blessings as we glorify Him and enjoy Him forever.

Produce and Promote Conferences It is our joy to bring some of the best Reformed preachers and teachers to our students through these local events around the country each year.

Prepare the Next Generat ion of Leaders When Ligonier Ministries fi rst began, it was a refuge for devoted learners and passionate followers of Christ. The new Ligonier Academy of Theological and Biblical Studies will once again establish a destination for study, fellowship, and collegial interaction essential to Ligonier’s goal to “further equip Christians to know what they believe, why they believe it, how to live it, and how to share it.”
