ICFRC Lecture Luncheon – Tuesday, Sept. 10, 12:00-1:15pm Professor Jonathan Carlson - Reining in Phaeton’s Chariot: Principles for the Governance of Climate Climate engineering is generally defined as the deliberate modification of large-scale Earth systems in order to change the climate. The most widely discussed form of climate engineering is the injection of particles into the stratosphere to block sunlight and cool the Earth. Increasingly, scientists and policymakers are seriously considering the use of climate engineering techniques to cool the Earth and offset the warming impact of rising atmospheric greenhouse gas concentrations. This talk discusses the dangers posed by climate engineering and argues that it should be subject to an international governance regime rather than being controlled exclusively by national governments. Professor Jonathan Carlson is a graduate of the University of Chicago Law School and McGill University, and also a proud native of North Dakota. He has lived in Iowa and taught at the University of Iowa College of Law for 30 years. His current teaching and research interests are focused on how international law can be effectively used to address pressing global environmental problems. Register here, or contact the ICFRC office at (319) 335-0351 or [email protected]. Lectures are 12:00-1:15 pm @ Congregational Church, 30 North Clinton Street. Luncheons are $9.00 for ICFRC members, $12.00 for non-members. We encourage you to bring guests who would enjoy this topic. Honors students, please register through the UI Honors or the UI Honors facebook site: www.facebook.com/HonorsatIowa.

Proseminar in Cinema and Culture The Fall 2013 Proseminar in Cinema and Culture, titled, "Martial Arts and the Cinema" meets Thursdays at 6:30 pm in 101 Becker Communication Studies Building (BCSB). All screenings are free and open to the public. Screenings are followed by discussions that are also open to all. If you require special accommodations to attend please contact [email protected]. James J. Jeffries (1910) from the United States and the wuxia film Romance of the Western Chamber (Xixiang ji) (1927) by Hou Yao from China. The two films offer an opportunity to consider a number of issues including the delineation between sport and martial art, the relationship between cinema and bodily violence, all while attending to the central matters of race and Orientalism. Future weeks will feature a wide range of international films that include an equally wide range of traditional and contemporary forms of martial arts. A Golden Year for Professor Jerry Croft

Have you ever taken one of Dr. Jerry Croft’s off-cycle courses, such as Germany and the Amanas, Pella and the Dutch, Poland and the Czech Republic, the European Union, and Developed and Developing Places? If not, this is the year to do it! 2013-2014 marks Jerry’s 50th year of teaching. Read on to learn more about this popular professor’s journey to Iowa and the International Studies Program… Jerry Croft grew up in a small town in southern Kansas, just 10 miles from the Oklahoma border. He was an all-state athlete in football and basketball during high school, and he began attending Kansas State with the intention of playing basketball, but never made the varsity team. Though he always loved learning about other countries and cultures, until he met a professor from the Geography Department he didn’t even know that geography was a major! After transferring to Oklahoma State, Jerry completed both a BA and an MA in Geography, before receiving his Ph.D. in Social Studies and Geography Education from Tulsa State University in 1971. In 1966 at the age of 25, though he only had a Masters degree, he was offered a job teaching geography at Oklahoma State; after teaching for 25 years, he became that institution’s youngest professor emeritus. He then taught at Tulsa State for a few years before moving to Iowa when his wife, Dr. Laurie Croft, got a job here at the University of Iowa. Jerry began lecturing at Iowa as an adjunct professor in the Geography Department (now the Department of Geographical and Sustainability Sciences), teaching his area and culture-focused courses for Global Studies, which eventually became the International Studies Program. According to Jerry, teaching at Iowa is like heaven after the more research-oriented ethos of Oklahoma State, and he loves that he can teach small classes of his own design using the Socratic Method. While at Oklahoma State, Jerry long dreamed of creating a course called European Ethnic Towns of the Upper Midwest, covering towns in Iowa, Wisconsin, and Minnesota. That dream was the basis for the short courses he teaches at Iowa – the only one in Iowa still missing is Norway and Decorah, because Decorah is a bit too far away for a one-day field trip. As anyone who has gone with Jerry to Pella, the Amanas, or the Czech Museum in Cedar Rapids can attest, Jerry firmly believes in the value and usefulness of the field trip as a teaching and learning tool. Jerry loves fall semester, when everyone is fresh and excited for the upcoming year, and autumn is in the air. He loves that his courses are a way for students who may be brand new to campus to connect in a smaller, more welcoming setting. And he loves to be able to encourage students to follow their passions, no matter what the naysayers claim. Congratulations on your Golden Year of Teaching, Jerry!
