When I think of utopia I get the idea of the stereotypical “50s Stepford Housewife” does this really exists now or has it ever?

The stereotype of the “Stepford Wife” is to be the perfect house wife in every way. These women were thought to be flawless, submissive, docile, fawning, beautiful and they seemed to be without any personality or opinions of their own.

The common housewife's duties were to cook, clean, have great sex, flatter their husbands and most of all give there husbands that much needed space they always desire.They were meant to be the mans perfect fantasy.

These women were happy to be giving up their jobs, their long-held career aspirations and years of hard work to move abroad or just somewhere new, in order to support their husband's careers.Do women really up and leave there life like this stereotype implies.

My argument is that does this stereotype really fit the over all population of married women today, or has the perfect utopia housewife concept fluctuated out.

The idea that these women were perfect in everyway and didn't encounter flaws sounds to hard to believe but was it really so perfect underneath.

Many Hollywood movies and sitcoms excel at representing this utopian idea of the perfect house wife. Hollywood has an on-going effort to make men look like the prefect husbands that women desire to do everything for.

For Example in the movie “Stepford Housewife's” and the sitcom “Desperate Housewife's”

This really isn't the reality of life at all but we would all love to think its this simple.

I think that maybe the Hollywood scene and old myths has morphed our thoughts on what the perfect housewife is meant to be. In reality there is no perfect women which could fit all these criteria's back in the 50s or today.

The idea of the perfect housewife may have always been there but I think there was always a lot hidden away under these perfect utopian lives.

Whilst the Tables have turned on the most part vastly, most men want wives who are going to go out to the working world and earn money as well as doing the duties of cooking and cleaning.

The children are either put into day care or a nanny is provided. If not they are looked after by a part-time also working mother until of school age.

The vast majority of women are now in the working force. Whether it be working from home, owning there on business or and employee somewhere. In the 50s married women working outside the home was frowned upon; but single women in the work force was tolerated in limited roles (teacher, nurse, secretary and waitress roles).

Over all I think this stereotype may have all been a 50s myth. Yes, times were very different then and there was a lot more of the “housewife” idea for the wives to stay at home doing the duties and a working wife was very frowned upon. But to say they were these flawless beautiful women that dropped there world for their husbands has to be an over thought stereotype. This does defiantly not exist for the over all women population today.

The perfect little utopian family life with no flaws would be a great thought. But I think it can be left as a thought.
