Johannes Brahms among classical composers is well illustrated by his inclusion among the "Three Bs" triumvirate of Bach, Beethoven, and Brahms. Of all the major composers of the late Romantic era, Brahms was the one most attached to the Classical ideal as manifested in the music of Haydn, Mozart, and especially Beethoven; indeed, Hans von Bülow once characterized Brahms' Symphony No. 1 (1855-1876) as "Beethoven's  Tenth."

Edward Elgar. Classical musiclovers will know him, the rest of the

world has probably never heard of him,and that is a great shame. AnEnglishman who wrote “jovial” music, his works were popular, but fell out of favor when war hit. None of this is whyhe’s on this list, however. His lastgreat masterpiece, Cello Concerto in E

minor  is the most powerful cello pieceI’ve ever heard in my life, and I still cry

every time I hear it. It’s an intimateportrait of an old man looking back onhis life while looking ahead to his owndeath. It doesn’t get more real than

that, and the honesty of this concertocan’t be ignored.

Antonín Dvořák Dvořák was a classical

composer who created some of the most

depressing music you have ever heard. By the way,Dvořák is pronounced Dvor-zhak. Well, not exactly,

but that will sound a lot closer than how it looks.

It’s the “ř” that has a special sound that only

Czech people seem capable of pronouncing, but

hearing it in English drives me nuts, because it’s so

far off. My favorite works from him are the

Slavonic Dances.

Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy

Far from the troubled, coarse libertine that hasbecome an archetype of the Romantic composer,Felix Mendelssohn was something of an anomalyamong his contemporaries. His own situation—one

largely of domestic tranquility and unhindered career

fulfillment—stands in stark contrast to thepersonal Sturm und Drangfamiliar to his peers.Mendelssohn was the only musical prodigy of thenineteenth century whose stature could rival that of Mozart. Still, his parents resisted any entrepreneurial

impulses and spared young Felix the strange, grueling lifestyle that was the lot of many child

prodigies.

Arnold SchoenbergThe father of atonal music and

developer of the twelve-tone system,Arnold Schoenberg is arguably the mostinfluencial of any 20th century composer. After Schoenberg, the centuries-old

necessity of a tonal base was thrown outthe window. Schoenberg, however, beganhis career following the footsteps of Mahler and Strauss, and in 1898 created

Ludwig van Beethoven is important to the 19th

Century because he is considered the first Romantic

composer. The compositions in his late period are

considered to be the Romantic compositions as they tend

to evoke more emotions, and one can even hear the

emotional struggle that Beethoven had gone through. His

use of musical “satz” is also particularly Romantic

because he often develops these satzs. Beethoven’s Violin

Concerto makes great use of developing musical satz andis an incredibly beautiful and Romantic piece.
