addit ive processes occur a longside neben) percep t ive phenomena o r whe the r

    mitwahrgenommen):

this problem pertains, in fact, to a

m ore gen eral theory o f intentionality].

The reproductive , associa t ive processes develop by posi t ioning themselves

alongside the percept ive e lemen t and in pr inciple , in contr ,~ t to wh at occurs in

the case of ass im ila t ive processes , have no l imits . Mental objects are presen ted

by a s ign w hich funct ions as a s ignal and which react ivates previous

    W o r d s

are such s igns, but a lso s ignals in general , l ike road s igns,

flags, etc., are of that type [Biihler 1930]. Since every language is grounded in

the organizat ion of a semantic f ie ld , the objects of mental p resence are objects

evo cativ e of lingu istic descriptions. In fact, they are image s non directly

    presented or perceived

    figural

of the act, the second being the

semant ic space o f mean ing

    [Musatti 1964; Poli 1995].

    4. Primary and secondary, direct and indirect consciousness

A crucial corollary to Brentano's fundamental theory of intentionality is the

dis t inct ion betwe en pr imary and secondary consciousness .

Brentano 's theory is ra ther complex and, moreover , developed in d is t inct

s tages ranging from the theses propounded in 1874 to those se t out in h is

    Nachlafl.

For s im plic i ty 's sake, the fo l lowing discussion encomp asses only his

ear ly and f inal posi t ions [For a deta i led t reatment of the subject of . Albertazzi

In 1874 Brentano dis t inguished between direct presenta t ion and indirect

presenta t ion as fo l lows: the act is d irect ly and pr imarly d irected towards the

obj ect, and indirectly and seconda rily directed tow ards itself, that is, i t is

cons cious of i tse lf . In the ear ly years of th is century , B rentano on the contrary

view ed the act as d irect ly d irected towards i tse lf and indirectly tow ards objects

    [Bren tano 1933 and 1976] .

In the analysis developed by B rentano a t the beginning of 1900, pr imary

    consciousness s t i l l concerns the object , and secondary consciousness s t i l l

conce rns consciousness of the act ; but now the

    direct

    mode is d irected towards

secondary consc iousness and the indirect modes are d irected towards pr imary

    consciousness . Moreover , the
