Appendix A - Systems With Built In Video

If your computer system has a built-invideo adapter, that is, one that is integralto the motherboard or system processor, you will need to take special care to disableit prior to installing another video card intothe system.

Many systems with built-in video have ahardware jumper or switch that can beused to disable the built-in video.

Other systems use a BIOS routine todisable the onboard video, if a new videocard is placed in the system.

In either case, you will need to refer toyour motherboard, or computer system, documentation to see what preparationsand procedures that you will need to followin order to disable the onboard video for

your system, as the different methodsused by various manufacturers are far tonumerous to detail here.

If you have any questions as to how toproceed or if you encounter any problemsin disabling the onboard video, pleasecontact your motherboard or systemmanufacturer for more detailedassistance.

Appendix B - Microsoft Operating System Updates

Windows 95

Since its release in 1995, there have beennumerous and sometimes revolutionarychanges in the computer world. Microsofthas released updates and patches in aneffort to keep the operating system up todate and to work with as much of the newtechnology as possible.

The following are several of the mostcommon patches and updates, as well aswhat they do, and why they are so needed.

PIIX4 Patch

The newer Intel chipsets such as thei430TX, i440LX, and i440BX use a newcontroller chip called the PIIX4 (this stands

for PCI IDE ISA eXcellerator version 4).This chip is responsible for controlling thePCI and ISA slots as well as controlling theonboard IDE functions of themotherboard.

Because of how new these chipsets are,Windows 95 cannot recognize them, andrequires a patch to function correctly.Without this patch, any device (such as avideo card) that would rely on this PIIX4chip will not function correctly.

This patch is the responsibility of themotherboard manufacturer, and tends toshow up in a variety of forms frommanufacturer to manufacturer.

In general, it tends to be called PIIX4.EXEbut can come under a variety of names.

This patch should be included on a floppydisk or CD that comes with themotherboard.

If you did not receive it with themotherboard, or if you have questionsconcerning its installation or use, pleasecontact your motherboard or systemmanufacturer for more detailedinformation.

USB Support For OSR2

This is a patch that Microsoft included withnewer versions of OSR2 (the OEM ServiceRelease 2 of Windows 95). The patch islocated on the Windows 95 installation CDand must be installed to enable supportfor USB devices and AGP video cards.

A-3

Page 32: Lilith Banshee AGP/PCI - miro-Support · • AGP-bus Slot Connector: The EONtronics Lilith Banshee AGP video card communicates with the computer through its AGP-bus connector that

The primary reason for needing this patchto use AGP is the fact that it installs a newmemory manager that allows the AGPDIME (DIrect Memory Execute) functionsto work correctly.

DIME essentially enables the AGP videocard to take advantage of, and use, systemmemory to store bitmap textures andother graphics information.

Without this patch installed, the EONtronicsLilith Banshee will not be able to properlyinitialize and will not operate in AGP mode.

This patch is available on your MicrosoftWindows 95 OSR2 with USB Support CD,or on your Microsoft Windows 95 OSR/2.5CD.

For OSR2 with USB, it is located in theother/usb director y and is calledUSBSUPP.EXE.

For OSR/2.5 it is located in the other/updates/usb directory and comes in twoparts, USBSUPP.EXE and USBSUPP2.EXE.Both of these need to be run.

For more information on installing the USBSupplement please refer to your Microsoftdocumentation. If you encounter aproblem installing this patch, pleasecontact your system manufacturer forassistance.

Microsoft Direct X

Direct X is a standardized API (ApplicationProgramming Interface) for the Microsoft

Windows family. It is what allows theoperating system to translate itscommands to your hardware drivers.

The primary advantage of the Direct X APIis the fact that it allows programmers towrite a single program independent ofyour system devices and allow theoperating system to translate theprograms needs into the appropriatecommands to your hardware.

With the release of Direct X 5.0, Microsoftincluded support for AGP graphics cards. This is the primary reason that it isimportant to installing the EONtronics LilithBanshee.

Without Direct X 5.0, the drivers for yourLilith Banshee will not be correctly

understood by the operating system, andthis can result in unsatisfactor yperformance as well as er rors andaberrant operation.

EONtronics has included the newestdristributable release of Microsoft DirectX 5.0 on the EONtronics EASi driver CD. Itcan be found in the DirectX directory.Simply double click the dxsetup.exe iconand your system will be updated.

Bus Master Drivers

With changes in technology, a form of IDEcontrol called Bus Mastering has come tobe developed.

Its most recent form is Ultra DMA/33.The primary point behind bus mastering

IDE is to lower the CPU processingrequirements that occur when an IDE harddrive or device is accessed. It is importantto remember that this method lowers theCPU overhead for drive operations, andthat in and of itself does not make thedrive access any faster than traditionalmethods. Bus master IDE finds its trueplace in multi tasking systems where CPUpower is at a premium.

While this has little to do with AGP graphicscards, it is included here because asignificant number of users experienceproblems with these drivers, namely theirCD ROM drive stops working after theyinstall them.

This can cause problems if you need toinstall drivers for the EONtronics PCI or

AGP graphics card from your installationCD.

Before you install any bus mastering driver, carefully read all of the attacheddocumentation to make sure that all ofyour system components are compatible.

If they are not, or you are not sure, DONOT install them.

If you have installed them and need toget rid of them, there are several waysthat are available, and much informationcan be found on the internet regardingthis subject.

The simplest and surest way is,unfortunately, to reinstall Windows 95.

As with Windows 95, Windows NT 4 hasundergone changes in order to keep pacewith technology, as well as, to fix or refineparts of the operating systems.

Microsoft has released these fixes in theform of Service Packs that are used toupdate and add functionality to yourWindows NT 4 system.

Most users either have no Service Packsor just Service Pack 1 installed, as this ishow the operating system was shipped.

The most recent Service Pack, at the timethis manual was written, is Service Pack4.

The important change in Service Pack 3or 4, as far as it applies to AGP video cards,is that Service Pack 3 or 4 allows WindowsNT 4 to use Direct X 5 drivers (for moreinformation on Direct X 5 please see thepreceding section on Direct X 5).

Without Service Pack 3 or 4, Windows NTwill be unable to correctly use your displaydrivers, and you will be forced to use640×480×16 colors.

If this happens to you, you can downloadService Pack 3 or 4 from the Microsoftweb site and install it on your system. Then, reinstall the video drivers and yourcomputer should be working correctly.

Appendix C - Socket 7 AGP Motherboards

The EONtronics Lilith Banshee AGP videocard is designed to work optimally with aPentium II processor. There are, however, several Socket-7 AGP solutions that areavailable in the market.

Because Intel chose not to make thedetails of AGP available to other chipsetmanufacturers, these other manufacturershave reverse engineered AGP with varyingdegrees of success.

The most important thing to rememberabout the non-Intel AGP implementationsis that you MUST load a special AGP driverthat is provided by the chipset ormotherboard manufacturer in order to getAGP to function correctly.

This driver is typically included on a CD or

floppy with the motherboard.

Another important point is that while youmay have this AGP driver installed, you maynot have a recent enough version of thedriver to support the AGP slot with yoursystem configuration.

Read your driver documentation carefullyto determine if your version supports the3Dfx Banshee chip correctly. If you haveany questions or are unsure, contact yourmotherboard manufacturer for moreinformation.

The most common Socket-7 AGP chipsetmakers and their internet web siteaddresses are listed to the right:

Gathering Information

Troubleshooting starts with diagnosis andprogresses to solution. Before diagnosiscan begin, you will need to collect someinformation. This is especially importantif you dont already know the contents ofyour computer and are planning to calltechnical support.

Some of the basic steps you need to takebefore making a call to technical supportare as follows:

• See if the monitor cable is securelyattached to the video card. Loose cablesare the most common cause of boardproblems. If it is loose, secure it now andsee if the graphics card is functioningcorrectly.

• See if the video card is seated correctlyon the motherboard. If the card is notseated correctly, remove it and reseat it,making sure that the entire connector isinside the slot.

• Check to make sure that you installedall of the necessary updates and patchesto your operating system. This can beespecially important when installing newhardware. Please refer to the installationsections of this user guide for moreinformation.

• Find out what other cards are in thecomputer. Cards can conflict with oneanother, and resolution of these conflictsvaries depending on what boards arepresent.

• Find out what versions of the drivers, operating systems, and related softwareare installed on your computer.

• Gather some history. Did the graphicscard ever work in this computer? If so,was anything changed or added to thecomputer just before it stopped working? Was the graphics card moved from adifferent computer where it was workingfine? Is the graphics card new?

The answers to these questions will speedup the diagnosis process dramatically andmay even enable you to correct a problemwithout resorting to technical support.

Solutions to Common Problems

Listed below are some of the mostcommon problems that are encounteredwith graphics cards, as well as solutionsfor them. Please refer to this sectionbefore calling technical support.

The graphics card stopped working whena software package was added to thecomputer.

Verify that the monitor cable is stillattached to the connector on the back ofthe video card.

Direct X 5 may not be installed, or an olderversion of Direct X may be installed. Mostprograms that use Direct X install it aspart of their installation, but some do not.

Also, some older programs may install anearlier version of Direct X, overwriting thelater version.

The graphics card stopped workingwithout apparent cause.

Some computers may not properly detect

the addition or change of an internal PCIor AGP card. On start up, the computermay beep differently from normal toindicate this error. Reset your computersCMOS. This is usually done through aswitch or jumper on the motherboard ofyour computer. Check your system manualor contact your motherboard or systemmanufacturer for instructions on how todo this.
