Double Page Spread Text- This relates to the image and is the main part of the double page spread as it is what the audience wants to read. The text is an article and is written in a simple and easy ways with some slightly slang like terms, this is done to capture the personality of the artist and get it across to the reader. Interviews are often used in music magazines because they grabs the readers attention and make them feel more involved with eh artist ; making them feel like they know them better. The text begins with a large letter ‘I’ using drop caps and this is done for presentation reasons, to make it obvious that this is the start of the text and to make it stand out so that people know where to star reading from, also it makes the piece look more interesting, instead of the small, dull print. There is also four columns used in the text which follows that codes and conventions of music magazines as the majority of music magazines has four columns in it as it helps separate the text and presents it in a more appealing way, as if it was just a page of constant writing it would seem too much and wouldn’t be appealing for the reader to read it.

The colour scheme used is red, white and black and so it follows the colour scheme of the NME magazine. It also shows that this magazine is for young adults, around 16+ as soft pastel colours haven’t been used, they are dark bold colours and the black and white gives the newspaper effect which wouldn’t be appealing to younger children. Also the use of plain white background draws attention to the text and the image as it isn’t clutter and there’s nothing distracting going on and it emphasises the red on the shirt and the word which catches the readers’ eye and makes them focus on these things as they are points of importance.

The Main Image- this photo taken is a medium shot of Lily Allen. She is standing in a very strong position and looking directly at the camera with an intense expression on her face which makes her looks more powerful and dominating. She is wearing a casual shirt which consist of the colours red, white and black which also follows the colour scheme of the magazine. Her hair and makeup is also dark which again matches the colour scheme, this is done to keep consistency throughout the magazine so that the audience recognize that it is NME. The image takes up almost the almost the whole of the right hand side of the double page and continues slightly onto the left side. This makes her the main focus of the article, making her stand out from the rest of the text and drawing the readers’ attention to her. This and the fact that she is the only image on the page instantly tells us that the article is all about her and would persuade her fan to buy the magazine as well.

Headline/Quote- the quote is written in a big bold font and the background is white so the letters stand out in the black blocks. This emphasizes the word s used and draws the reader’s attention to them. This is done because the quote inspires the readers’ interests and encourages them to read the full article. The font that is used is also very arty which creates the impression that Lily Allen might be an arty person and suggests that she is unique and original, making the audience look up to her and maybe see her as a role model.

Design Balance- The balance of the double page spread is good as the left side of the page is a huge headline with the text underneath it and on the right side of the page; the image takes up most of the space. So the pages contain the text on the headline and an image of the star profile for the music magazine so the balance is consistent. The symmetry of the page is horizontally balanced and there is the same space between the columns of the text. This makes the double page spread formal and appealing to the audience as the text is placed neatly and the image is well positioned on the second page and taking it up. The use of this design symmetry is commonly used in magazines as it is easy for the reader to understand and communicate with.

The Guttenberg Design Principle- The Guttenberg design principle suits the page well as the left page is more text and is controlled by that which to the right page there is a huge image so the design is balanced and compliments this principle well. Use of Rule of thirds: The rule of thirds is successful on this image as lily’s face and body are in the centre of the thirds which means the reader will first look here. Also there is nothing important in the bottom corner thirds which means it is a succefully designed image placement, the image is seen as unusual as the star is leant towards the camera.

Target Audience and Need-The target audience that this piece is mainly aimed at would be 16 and over due to Lily Allen being young as well and her genre of music is aimed at the younger generation rather than the older. Although this article is based on her being argumentative which could be advertising to the older generation as if the story is true, its not the best thing to be read by the young teenagers. Yet the type of image used does link into the face that she is down with the youngsters more than anything as its not very sophisticated like she would be if it was aimed at older adults.
