The Kadant Carmanah Lily Pad Chipper is designed to achieve high chip recovery when processing log ends where the diameter is greater than the overall length - this material is also known to some as lily-pads.

The drum and spout assemblies of the Kadant Carmanah Lily Pad Chipper are inclined 30 degrees toward the infeed flow. Incoming lily pads, laying flat on the infeed conveyor, ride over the conveyor end and slide down the inclined inside wall of the hopper. This orientation provides a stable position for the chipping to begin which yields high recovery rates from lily pads.

The Kadant Carmanah Lily Pad Chipper utilizes many small individual knives arranged in a spiral around the drum surface. The knife cutting edge is basically parallel to the wood grain similar to the cutting done by a veneer lathe. With this type of cut, the energy required to produce a given volume of chips is up to one half of what is normally required by conventional disc chippers. Further, cutting parallel to the grain results in lower chipper noise level.
