ACEA-SPEZIFIKATIONENDie ACEA (Association des Con struc-teurs Européens d’Auto mobiles) ist seit 01.01.1996 die offizielle Nach-folgeorganisation der CCMC. Sie de-finiert die Qua li tät der Motoren-Öle entspre chend den europäischen An-forderungen. Die ACEA-Klassi fi ka tio-nen haben für die Pkw-Benzinmoto-ren die Kurz bezeich nungen A1, A2, A3, A5. Für Pkw-Dieselmotoren gel-ten die Be zeich nungen B1, B2, B3, B4, B5. Für Pkw-Benzin- und Diesel-mo toren mit Abgas nach be hand lung, z.B. Alle anderen Mo to-ren können mit einem Öl der Norm 504 00/ 507 00 (LIQUI MOLY TOP TEC

4200) befüllt werden. Mit diesem Mo-torenöl las sen sich unter Beachtung der Herstel lervorschrift Öl wech s el-inter valle von bis zu 50.000 km reali-sieren. Der Wechsel des Öles muss je doch spätestens nach 2 Jahr en er-folgen (siehe Her stell er vor schrift).

VISKOSITÄTist das Maß für die innere Reibung einer Flüssigkeit. Sie hängt sehr stark von der Temperatur ab und wird durch das SAE-Komitee (Society of Auto-motive Engineers) in einer Zahlen-Buchstaben Kom bination (z. B. 5W-40) eingeteilt. Die Ordnungszahl (z. B. 5W = Winter) steht als Kennzahl für das Verhalten bei tiefen Temperaturen, während die Ord nungs zahl (z. B. 40) als Kennzahl für das Fließ verhal ten bei hohen Temperaturen (100 °C steht. Die motorische Lebensdauer ist im Wesentlichen vom eingesetz-ten Grundöl sowie von der Viskosität abhängig. Ob das Öl die letzte Schmier stelle im Motor bei tiefen Temperaturen in 2,8 Sekunden bei 0W-XX Ölen, oder in 48 Sekunden bei 15W-XX Ölen erreicht, ist hierbei ein entscheidendes Kriterium der Motor-lebensdauer.

Konventionell werden Motoren öle aus Mineralölen hergestellt. Diese Öle sind aber durch steigende An for-derungen wie verlängerte Öl wech sel-Inter valle, hohe Motorleistung und der Forderung nach Kraftstoffeinsparung in ihrer Lei stungs fähigkeit be grenzt. HYDROCRACK (HC)--MOTORENÖLE

MoS2-LEICHTLAUFMoS2 (Molybdändisulfid) bildet auf den reibenden und gleitenden Teilen im Mo tor einen ho c h belastbaren Schmi e r film. Die ausge sprochenen Lei c h t lauf ei gen sch aften füh r en zu einem leichteren Mo torlauf, vermin-dern Verschleiß und Be trie b s stö-rungen. Wissen schaf t liche Ver suche haben er geben: Re du zierung von Öl- und Kraft stoff ver bra uc h sowie wesent lich weniger Verschleiß im Motor. The quality of motor oils is defined by a complex combination of letters and numbers. These will be explained as follows. The correct oil for your car can be identified by our printed oil guide or in the internet at www.liqui-moly.de.

API CLASSIFICATIONSThe American Petroleum In sti tute (API) has laid down the quality re-quirements and test criteria for motor oils world wide. S stands for gasoline and C for diesel engines. The next letter de notes the issue of the classification. API-SN is curren tly the latest and highest quality grade for gasoline en gines.

ACEA SPECIFICATIONSThe ACEA (Association des Con struc-teurs Européens d’Au to mobiles) has been the official successor to the CCMC since 01.01.96. This organiza-tion defines the quality of motor oils according to European specifica-tions. The ACEA clas si ficatons use the abbreviations A1, A2, A3 and A5 for passenger vehicle gasoline en-gines. The abbreviations B1, B2, B3, B4, B5 apply to passenger vehicle diesel engines. There are so-called Low SAPS or Mid SAPS oils for passenger car gasoline and diesel

engines with ex haust gas aftertreat-ment, e.g. soot par ticulate filter, as per Euro 4 standard or higher. These oils also carry the de sig nations C1, C2, C3 or C4. The abbreviations E2, E3, E4, E5, E6, E7, E9 apply to diesel en gines in commercial vehicles and working machinery. The additional num ber indicates performance crite-ria.

EURO 4/5 STANDARDThe Euro IV emissions stand ard has been in effect as of Jan u ary 1, 2005. The Euro V standard is in effect through out Europe for passenger cars since September 1, 2009. This means that the emissions from die-sel engines must be reduced by up to 57 percent. Complying with this new standard not only re quires technical modi fica tion s to en gine technology or ex ha u st gas after-treatment sys tems; the mi neral oil in dustry also has been commissio-ned to develop new lubricants. To this end, LIQUI MOLY has engi-neered ”TOP TEC 4xxx”, lubricants specially designed to comply with the new emissions stand ards. Dai m-ler , VW, BMW and Opel for example, prescribe mandatory use of such lu-bricants for their diesel-powe red vehicles equipped with a soot par-ticulate filter.

COMPANY APPROVALSDifferent vehicle manufacturers place additional requirements on motor oils: for example, Merce des-Benz – Sheets 228.1, 228.3 228.5 and 228.51 for com mercial vehicle diesel engines and 229.1, 229.3, 229.31, 229.5 and 229.51 for passenger vehi-cle gasoline and diesel engines; VW: Out-of-date VW Standard 500 00 al-ready with drawn, VW Standard 501 01 is the stand ard for gasoline en-gines, VW Stand ard 505 00 for diesel engines with exhaust-gas turbo-char ging, 505 01 for diesel engines with pumped-jet injec tion systems and VW Stand ard 502 00 for gasoline engines with enhanced performance. All VW standards na med require a change interval of a ma ximum of 15,000 km or, for low mileage driv-ers, an annual oil change interval. VW Standards 503 00 / 506 00 / 506 01 are valid for gasoline engines, diesel en gines with and without pumped-jet injec tion as well as extended maintenance intervals (WIV) as of model year 2000. For pumped-jet engines with extended maintenance intervals (WIV), the standard 506 01 came into effect starting 5/2001. A Standard 506 01 lubricant is cur-rently mandatory for R5 and V10 TDI engines up to manufacture year June 2006. All other en gines can be filled with Stan dard 504 00 / 507 00 oil (LIQUI MOLY TOP TEC 4200). With this motor oil, oil change intervals of up to 50,000 km are possible as per the manufac turer’s spe cifications. The oil change must how ever be performed after 2 years, at the latest (see manufacturer’s specifications).

VISCOSITYis the measure of the internal friction of a fluid. It depends very strongly on the temperature and is classified by the SAE committee (Society of Auto-motive Engineers) into a number/ letter combination (e.g. 5W-40). The reference number (e.g. 5W = winter) is the code for the behavior at low temperatures while the reference number (e.g. 40) is the code for the flow properties at high tempe ratures (100 °C). The operating life of an en-gine depends substantially on the basic oil used, and also on the visco-sity of the motor oil. Whether the oil

takes 2.8 seconds to reach the last lubrication point of the engine at low temperatures in the case of 0W-XX oils or 48 seconds in the case of 15W-XX oils has a decisive influence on the engine’s operating life.

ADDITIVESAdditives are chemical agents which are added to oils to improve existing proper ties or to add new properties. An ti oxi dants, for example, improve the ageing stability of the oil, wear-protec tion additives protect the en-gine from high levels of wear and cleaning additives loosen and remove harmful deposits inside the engine. Different types and amounts of addi-tives are added to the oil depending on application and required perfor-mance capa bi lities. In tech nical jar-gon, the oils are said to be ‘blended’ or ‘doped’. The propor tion of additives in a modern motor oil can range from 15 – 30 %.

MINERAL MOTOR OILSMotor oils are conventionally made from mineral oils. In view of the in-creased de mands for extended inter-vals between oil changes, high engine performance and low fric tion pro per-ties, etc., the per formance of these oils is limited. Typical vis co si ties are: 10W-40, 15W-40 and 20W-50.

HYDROCRACK (HC) MOTOR OILS

Hydrocrack oils are mineral base oils which have been fur ther processed at the refinery using ela borate meth-ods. They also contain a small propor-tion of sy nthetic components. Ty pi cal viscosities are: SAE 5W-40, 5W-30 and 10W-40.

PARTLY SYNTHETIC MOTOR OILS

These are mineral oils with syn thetic components. They im pro ve the cold-start properties, keep the engine clean and provide out standing wear pro tec tion. Ty pical vis cosities are: 10W-40 and 5W-40.

FULLY SYNTHETICMOTOR OILS

Valuable Synthetic fluids are the ba-sis of up-to-date high perfor mance motor oils. Fully synthetic motor oils can be used for gasoline and diesel en gines, provide excellent oil delivery during cold starting and optimum wear protection, have friction-reduc-ing properties and keep the engine outstandingly clean. They frequently comply with the highest quality stand ards of the API, ACEA and com-pany specifications. They are parti-cularly suit able where there are long intervals between oil changes. Typi-cal vis cosities are: 0W-30, 0W-40 and 5W-40.

DIESEL MOTOR OILSCurrently, the ACEA B3 or B4 cla s - s i fi ca tions represent the hig hest re-quirements on passenger vehicle diesel and turbo charged diesel en -gines. They are most suitable for use in aspirated and turbocharged diesel engines with and with out charge-air cooling. These re qui rements are only satisfied by high-performance motor oils such as LIQUI MOLY DIESEL HIGH TECH 5W-40.

LOW FRICTION OILSThese have good cold-flow pro-perties and are characterized by low pumping work requirements and are capable of high thermal loading. They therefore have a bene ficial effect on the fuel con sump tion. Typical vis-cosities are: 0W-30, 0W-40, 5W-40, 5W-30 and 10W-40.

YEAR-ROUND OILSIn a mild climate, year-round or multigrade motor oils can be used throughout the year. They do not thicken du ring the winter and they are not too thin at high engine tem-peratures – for example, 0W-30, 0W-40, 5W-30, 5W-40, 10W-40, 15W-40 and 20W-50.

MoS2 LOW FRICTIONMoS2 (molybdenum disulfide) forms a thin layer of high load-bearing lu-bricant on surfaces exposed to fric-tion and on sliding parts in the engine.

The excellent low friction properties of this material lead to lighter engine running, thus in hi bi ting wear and pre-venting break downs. Results from scientific tests have shown that MoS2 reduces fuel and oil consumption and leads to significantly less wear in the engine. MoS2 Low Friction is availa-ble from Liqui Moly as an oil additive (added to the motor oil) or as a ready-prepared MoS2 low friction motor oil.

In spite of all efforts to polish the sur-face of the metals mechanically, they still look rough under the microscope (1). This roug h ness is made smooth by applying a film of MoS2 lubricant (2) and this ”sur face finish” reduces frictional resistance and decreases wear.
