*CORONA VIRUS ALERT: STAY SAFE!
Captain’s Corner It was with great sadness to report to everyone, that we lost a true friend,
Derek Martin. He was a great supporter of all our lady golfers and will be
truly missed. Thank you to all that donated to his wife Renee Martin, and
his two children. We will keep him forever in our hearts. Thanks to all
who donated gift cards to his family.
By many requests, I am reprinting the letter Derek wrote to the Ladies 18,
that was published in the January Newsletter.
Letter from Derek Martin, Lincoln Hills Golf Professional
Thank you so much from the bottom of my heart for inviting me to your
ladies Christmas luncheon today. I was able to have several conversations
with a lot of the ladies and even participate in the charades. I Saw Mama
Kissing Santa Claus was epic. I probably blushed just as much as Santa’s
outfit.
After talking to several individuals, not very many people know my
background; a few people do and being introduced as the bag boy was a
little upsetting to some ladies at the luncheon. A lot of ladies still don’t
know my background, except for the table I sat at during the luncheon.
My Dad was a Sergeant Major in the United States Army and I joined the
Air Force at 17, only because he signed the papers to give me permission to
join the United States Air Force. I turned 18 in basic military training, 19
and 20 in Iraq, 21 and 22 in Afghanistan, 23 and 24 in Iraq. I was a military
K9 handler that was attached to an Army Ranger Special Forces Unit on all
my deployments. I spent 15 months in Iraq, 18 months in Afghanistan, and
finished with another 15 months in Iraq. I was injured in a roadside
explosion in 2008 and two of my best friends were killed in this event. I
lost part of my finger, and shrapnel is in my left rib cage. The bones have
now grown over the shrapnel, so it’s almost impossible to remove it. I was
diagnosed with PTSD, traumatic brain injury, hearing loss and other
multiple symptoms through the VA.
I’m a Teaching Golf Professional and I have been coaching my kid in flag
football, basketball, tee-ball, soccer, and golf in the last several years.
I am a Certified Teaching Golf Professional with a business degree in Golf
Management. I just received my Master’s Degree in Business in San
Francisco.
I’m a Purple Heart recipient and created a nonprofit organization that
helps combat injured veterans gather around the great game of golf. My
logo is myself hitting a golf ball off Saddam’s Palace.
I’m a busy guy, but I try to move my schedule (kids, VA, school) around
Thursdays, because I enjoy seeing you ladies and hope to bring a smile to
your face. Y’all bring a big smile to my face and something to look forward
to every Thursday.
Merry Christmas to the best and cutest group of ladies I have ever
encountered. See you next year!!!
With Love,
-D

April is now here, and when we have conquered
this terrible Coronavirus, I hope to see many more of you out on the
courses. And while I am talking about getting out playing, let’s remember
about Pace of Play tips. We are each responsible for Pace of Play so that
our rounds don’t drag on and hold others up (ex. only spending 3 minutes
finding a lost ball).
Pace of Play Tips
1. Walk quickly and play Ready Golf the entire round.
2. Watch each other’s tee shots and any other shots headed for a rough,
water hazard, or out of bounds.
3. If your ball might be lost outside a water hazard or out of bounds,
play a Provisional Ball (Rule 27-2).
4. If you can’t see the group in front of you, speed it up.
5. Read your putt BEFORE it is your turn.
6. Mark all scores at the next tee box.
7. Park your cart to the closest exit off the green.
8. Return your clubs to your bag at the next hole.
9. Help any new or old member when needed.
10. Most of all be courteous when keeping up Pace of Play, (don’t hit
into the group ahead of you-especially if the Captain is ahead of
you!), and check with your group before hitting or putting out of
turn).
Standing Rules Updates
There will be a revision of
Standing Rule #4 to show that
posting after a round is done by
the Tournament Person on Golf
Genius, and not by each individual
golfer.
In addition, there was a meeting in March with Captain Julie Storer, Co-
Captain Deb Dunipace, Tournament chair Mikie Briggs, and Rules/Pace of
Play Chair Nancy Sartor, and Handicap Chair Linda Chappelear, to review
Standing Rule #10 regarding handicap limits, in regards, to our new
NCGA Rules. After carefully reviewing other similar golf club’s practices,
the following was decided upon and approved by our LH 18 Executive
Board:
The following LH 18 Standing Rules was agreed upon by reviewing
compilation of Max Score information from various sources including:
LHLG Standing Rules, The World Handicap System, Tournament Chair for
USGA, WGANC and Whitney Oaks.
LHLG Standing Rules
If you do not finish a hole and pick up your ball, the recorded score is 10.
The purpose is to keep you in the competition and improve the pace of
play. Your posted score will not be a 10; it will be par plus 2 plus your
pops. If you pick up you will still be included in Chip-ins, birdies, and
ECC. You will not be included in PUTTS.
Max 10 Rule keeps you in Pro Points competition, but if you want to
remain in Pro Putts, you must hole out. If you pick up and don’t putt out,
record a 10 and leave Putts blank. To stay in this competition, complete the
hole. If that takes you 15 strokes, you record a max 10 and include your
putts.
MAX SCORE, RULE 21.2 This “Game” or Tournament rule was intended
to increase pace of play without eliminating people from the game and
intended primarily for an individual stroke play game. This is a game rule,
not a posting rule, and does not change or affect the Max net double bogie
posting rule. Max Score, Rule 21.2, is set for all holes on both courses.
Hole not Played (i.e. you’ve played 13 holes and it starts raining), Post the
Net Par for each hole you do, not play. (Par plus your pops = net par.)
Thanks to all of you who helped pull this information together so that we
could discuss this for our club.
April Spotlight
Loretta Kuechle
Our lovely lady and friend, Loretta Kuechle, is
leaving Lincoln Hills!!! We are saddened, but
happy that she is moving to Southern California
where her allergies will be much better. She has
a mild auto immune disease where her body’s
immune system breaks down. Port Hueneme, California is her next
journey. It is an affordable beach town, close to the ocean, with clean air!
By the way, “Hueneme” is a Chumash Indian name meaning, “Place of
Relaxation.” Loretta and her husband Richard have purchased a townhome
and are excited to check out the neighboring golf courses.
Loretta is an amazing lady who has done a lot in her lifetime. She was
born in the San Joaquin Valley in the very small town of Fowler, California.
Hating living in the valley, she said her High School goal was “to get out of
Fowler and not marry a farmer!” And she did just that.
Nursing was her passion, so she went to Nursing School at Highland
Hospital in Oakland. She became an R.N. and her first marriage was to a
doctor. Life blessed her with two children, Kristin and Bronwyn. She told
me a fun story about how this 21year old farm town girl on her
honeymoon, took a canoe trip over 100 miles in British Columbia around a
chain of lakes. They experienced storms and were chased by grizzly bears!
Loretta had discovered a new passion for athletics- she started working out
at the gym, walking, hiking, river rafting, and backpacking all over the U.S.
She even spent 10 days hiking through snowpack over the John Muir Trail.
Mountain climbing appealed to her and she climbed a mountain near Mt.
Hood in Oregon.
Arizona was her home for a couple of years working as an R.N. for Indian
health Services. Moving onward to Santa Cruz, California she: worked
many years as an ICU and CCU Nurse, volunteered for Planned
Parenthood, and was involved in a Women’s Clinic.
Continuing her ambitions, Loretta went back to school at
UCSF (while juggling a job and family) to obtain her
Nurse Practitioner License! Also, going to San Jose State
University, studied Obstetrics for her Nurse Practitioner
program, where she became an RN/OB-GYN-NP,
learning Spanish and helping low-income women.
Retiring in 1995, she found she had a new interest as a
Real Estate Home Stager! She also was an avid Tennis
player and then found a love for running (she said “like
Forrest Gump!). She was able to run a seven- minute mile. Her passion for
running led her to be a top winner, so she joined a running team and
started running marathons. She qualified for the Boston Marathon. In
1984, at the young age of 36. Loretta qualified for the very first Olympic
Trials in Olympia, Washington with 2 hours and 50 minutes to qualify, and
a 6+ minute mile. There was BIG FANFARE for these trials. The same
year famous runner, Joan Benoit, won the Olympic Race in 1984!
The little hometown girl from Fowler, CA met her second husband
Richard, a dentist, to whom she has been married for 32 years. They used
to just play casual golf 2x a week. Since tennis and running blew her knee
out, her love of golf really began in Lincoln Hills, when they came here in
2012, eight years ago. Starting at a 28 handicap, she has worked tirelessly
to improve her game and is now a 15 handicap! Taking lessons and
practicing her set-up has been integral in improving her
game! Her best golf tip is to Chip, Putt, and
PRACTICE.
By chairing many Tournaments, such as the Ladies
Invitational twice, and being our Catering Chair, (she
got a kick out of it!), she became involved in LH Ladies
18 Golf. She regrets not having played more with our
group-though she did say she is a late riser!
Loretta wants us all to know how much she has enjoyed all the activities
and meeting the Ladies!
WE WILL MISS YOU LORETTA!!! BEST WISHES IN YOUR NEXT
ADVENTURES!
St. Patrick’s Leprechaun Play Day Results
Our Leprechaun Ladies came out swinging on a beautiful,
sunny Thursday, March 12th. The Leprechaun Dancing Tutu
Ladies welcomed all the players in the morning. Dressed from top to
bottom as Leprechauns in their tutus and head boppers, Valerie McElroy
and Julie Storer, did a little “jig.” A Shamrock cookie was given to each
lady golfer. The LH18 Ladies showed their Irish Leprechaun spirit with the
“Wearing O’ the Green,’ to join in the fun! A prize was given to Sandy
Tamanti, for the Best Dressed Leprechaun Lady! Two See’s “Candy Potatoes”
were given to Dee Arts and Kelley Royball, as runners-up. Honorable
Mention to Spirited Leprechaun Ladies Donna McDonald, Maureen Senn,
and Mitsuko Cameron. There was a large gatherin’ o’ the Ladies in the
Sports Bar afterwards. Our marvelous Millie
Sams won CTP on #7 of the Orchard Course,
5’9.” See the full list of winners in “Results”

Weekly Tournament Play
Reminder that when you sign up to play on Thursdays, there will often be
changes to pairings due to last minute cancellations. You may not be
paired with your original partners. It takes the quick thinking of that day’s
tournament manager to rearrange pairings and get everyone out on the
course on time. Play days require 16 players or golf will be cancelled. The
weather is also watched closely, and the game can also be cancelled due to
bad weather. Once the game is cancelled, you can always contact the
course on your own and still play. If you are thinking of cancelling, please
contact the Play Day Manager listed on the Golf Genius pairings sheet as
soon as possible. It takes time to run the scorecard cards and change
partners. Thank You Mikie Briggs and Play Day Managers for all your
efforts!
