MARCH MADNESS March Madness is usually associated with the Men’s College Basketball Playoffs. This year I use that term as I look at all the great things on Advent’s calendar and wonder how we will fit it all in. March 1, Wednesday, begins our journey into Lent with Ash Wednesday service at 7:00 PM. During Lent we reflect on the meaning of our baptism into Christ’s death and resurrection. The sign of ashes reminds us of our mortality, that we are but dust and to dust we shall return. Yet all is not lost, for we are also reminded of God’s constant invitation to new life through grace and forgiveness. Our church entrance and worship space will be decorated with images to remind us baptism, gradually leading us from the dead of winter into the new life of spring. Marking the 500th anniversary of the Reformation, our weekly Midweek Worship Service, “With Awe and Love,” is based on Luther’s Small Catechism. The series covers Luther’s catechism of The Ten Commandments, Creed, Lord’s Prayer, Baptism, and Holy Communion. Friday, March 10, Advent will host an Agape Meal with Christ the King Lutheran Church. It will be a time to renew old friendships, develop new friendships, and begin the exploration of how we might minister more effectively to our community together rather than separately. Please set this time aside to show support for looking at ministry in new ways. On Saturday, March 18, Women of Advent will meet to continue the conversation of supporting our community through Women’s Empowerment and other means. Sunday, March 19. we welcome those persons who have become part of the Advent community in the past year. We’ll introduce the names behind the faces you’ve seen around and invite you to introduce yourselves to our newest fellow disciples!
2
Also on March 19th our youth are leading the way in working with Ascension and Christ the King Lutheran churches!! They are asking our help in donating items to fill Blessing Bags for the homeless. You can find the list of needed items later in the newsletter. Once again, our youth are blazing new paths for us! Those are just “special” things. We also continue to work on being stewards of our finances, property, and time. Our finance committee is working to update and prioritize benevolences. The office area has been painted and will be re-carpeted after the flood. Not Noah’s flood, but our own overflow of water from the women’s bathroom. Our Council continues to look at ministry opportunities and review what works well and what may need to be tweaked. The Tuesday crew continues to give an enormous amount of time and effort to keeping us in lights, repairs, upgrades, and all sorts of things! We continue to pray for those with special needs that God has brought to our attention. I see our community increasing in the people Jesus has called us to welcome – the homeless, the refugee, and those with mental health issues. For people who have been ignored and denied to find refuge, welcome, hospitality, and Christ’s word among us signals that Christ is indeed at work in, with, and through us. We also pray for guidance in how to support without creating dependency with our newest worshippers. We are blessed to be busy with so many things. God is here!

With Awe and Love
Midweek Lenten Series—Weds. 7:00 pm
Based on Luther’s Small Catechism
March 8: Ten Commandments In Exodus God gives Moses the Law so that the people of Israel would know
how to fulfill their part of God’s covenant as God’s people.
March 15: Creed The Creed, crafted in the early days of the church,
gives us a simple but firm foundation for sharing and professing our faith beliefs.
March 22: Lord’s Prayer Prayer is conversation with God. One of the best ways to turn our lives
over to God and begin anew is through prayer.
March 29: Baptism In baptism, we die to our sinful self and rise to the new life in Christ.
April 5: Holy Communion We gather around the table to remind ourselves of Jesus’ sacrifice
and new covenant on our behalf.
Bob Mathews, Church Council President This will be my 21st “epistle” with 3 more to go before my term
expires as President of this totally “AWESOME” congregation. The journey for me has been a life-changing experience, even though I have served you previously in this position. Your support and response to our ever-changing ways in which we serve our LORD has been way beyond my expectations. Thanks be to God.
A few updates now on ongoing ministries and activities here at Advent: The WINTER SACTUARY with the HART organization has taken on new roots. We have formed
an Advent/Hart committee to serve on a year around basis addressing the needs of the home-less in Citrus Heights and nearby communities. We already have 6 volunteers to join me and co-chair Barbara Olsen. We welcome more and will have our first organizational meeting in March. If this interests you please contact myself or Barbara. The more the merrier.
Our ROOFING PROJECT has been confirmed to start on Monday, March 6th. I know . . . this has changed several times, but now we have caught up with the weather cycle. It will take 5 days to complete this last phase. The contractor has given us a discount on the contract because of all the delays and if the project doesn’t start on Monday, March 6th there will be an additional discount given on this project.
OFFICE / RECEPTION AREA — we have completed the first phase of this makeover. Freshly repainted the entire area, with work done by our friend Brent Wallace. A great big thank you to the Blessed Ministers of Maintenance (also known as the Tues. Crew) who worked for 2 solid days to help make this project come together. Next step is all new commercial grade carpet to be done by Lowe’s very soon. The funding for this came from an insurance claim we received for damage incurred in a big water leak in the women’s restroom in the Friendship Hall.
AGAPE—last but not least I prayerfully hope you will ATTEND the “Agape” potluck meal that is scheduled for FRIDAY, MARCH 10TH at 6:30 P.M. As stated in a Stay Connected message sent out mid-February, “All congregations go through painful splits where anger and hurt remain with the memories. Not all congregations are willing to come together with another congre-gation, in which many formerly ‘beloved’ members now worship.” Please join us and former members, now with Christ The King, their council and staff to renew our friendships.
Well, that is it for this “epistle.” God Bless, Bob Mathews, Council President
Advent Lutheran Church 6
"The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’” Matthew 25:40 When I read this verse I often think of our congregation. For years Advent Lutheran Church has been the welcome place. We welcome all to our services. One Sunday a homeless man sat with Maynard and me during a worship service. He was so happy to be there. He was quite pleased and surprised when we passed the peace of our Lord to him. Our congregation has opened our doors to the Boy Scouts, AA, NA, Love of Christ (Mongolian) church, P.O.N.A, a knitting group and others I'm probably forgetting. Sunrise Christian Food Ministry is located at Advent. Our congregation helps with Loaves and Fishes meals on the 5th Saturday of the month. St. John's Shelter for women and children are fed by a group from Advent. Our congregation also helped this year with housing the homeless for a week. Our knitters donate numerous caps for chemo patients and our quilters donate to Loaves & Fishes, Women’s Empowerment and Habitat for Humanity among others. Our church family also supports our own family. Whenever Maynard has been ill, we have received cards, support, prayers, and love from our church family. I can not think of another "family" I would want to be a part of. Advent is our home and we are proud to be a part of this congregation.

FOR WHAT IT IS WORTH -- Vision, Mission, the Future One Sunday after services while mingling in the Narthex, I overheard someone mention the Endowment Fund. Not wanting to interrupt their enjoyment of coffee and sweets, I strolled away. However, I was resolved to make an attempt to let our members know more about this particular fund. So here goes --- if you have ever wondered what the Endowment Fund is all about, here is a Cliffs Notes version: The Endowment Fund was established in 2010. It is a "legacy" fund of Advent that is expressly designed to be invested and earn interest income to be used for the Church's ministry. It is a fund where church members can designate gifts of cash, publicly traded securities, or other types of funds as a donation now or bequeathed from their estate. Funds may be tax deductible for the giver. When the fund’s balance grows to $250,000, the interest earned by the fund will become available for the needs of the church. Any expenditure of the interest generated annually from the Endowment Fund would be consistent with the Endowment Fund’s mission as stated in its bylaws and approved by the congregation. For those of you who are interested or have questions about the Endowment Fund, please see our brochure in the Narthex or contact a member of the Endowment Fund committee.

“The Greatest Story: Jesus”
Wednesday Bible Study groups
2 Choices for You: 1:00 pm—2:00 pm or from 6:15 pm—7:00 pm
Both are in the Friendship Hall and are led by Pastor Cindy.
All adults are welcome to participate. This is a 16-session overview of the life and teachings of Jesus. It draws from all four Gospel accounts, while showing the distinctive message that each of the evangelists presents.
Each session relates a Biblical theme to life today and includes a video and drawings that reinforce the theme of the week.
Whether you are new to Bible study or a long-time Biblical scholar, you will find something of value in this course. Be sure to start the new year off with “the greatest story ever told.”
