Eachdayisagift.Themomentweallunderstandthisconceptandfact,themorealiveandmemorableeachday,hour,minuteandsecondbecomes.Myfavoritescripture,andtheonethathasgivenmeencouragementandguid-ancedaily,isProverbs3:5-6whichsays,“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not unto your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight.”Ihaddonethat,orsoIthought,untilMarchof2011.Butfirst,letmegiveyoumystoryleadinguptothattime. Abeautiful,amazing,wonderfulwomannamedPeggyCampbellbecamemywifeonDecember17,1988.IhadgraduatedfromLifeChiropracticCol-legeinMarchof1986,andlifewasgood.Iworkedwithmybrother-in-law,whowasalsoachiropractor,until1991whenmywifeandIopenedourownoffice. Our firstchild,LindsayL.Hathcock, IIIor“Tripp”wasborn in1993,followed by daughter Aubrey Sloanin1996andanotherdaughterMicahLynnin2003.Ourpracticegrew,andwewereabletopurchase1/5ofacityblock and a building that was oncecombinedmedical/dentaloffices. Af-ter extensive renovation and remod-eling, we were the proud owners ofa wonderful building, property andpractice.In2006,IwasevenchosentobetheChiropractoroftheYearbymypeersfromallacrossthestateofTen-nessee.Godhadblessedourmarriage,ourfamily,ourwork,andourlife. TrippwasbornwithL4,L5myelomeningocele,or,assomemayknowit,SpinaBifida.Inhisfirst5years,heexhaustedalifetimepolicyofhealthinsur-ance.Sincehisbirth,hehasnotonlysurvived,butalsothrivedthrough58surgeries. Thosemultipleprocedures includedshuntplacement, shunt revi-sion,hindbraindecompression,spinaldetethering(twice),spinalfusion(from both ilium to T2)withbilateralplacementoftitaniumrods,andmanyothers.Wehavebeeninvolvedwithmultiplesupportgroups,buildingprogramsformedical facilities,andRonaldMcDonaldHouseandroomsaswehavebeen“frequent flyers”andreceivedsupportfromtheseamazinggroupsaswell. Raisingachildwithadiagnosisisachallengeonmanyfronts,oneofwhichisfinancial.Wehavebeentofederalcourtmanytimesfightingforourchild,andevenhearingonejudgeexclaim,infrontofTripp,that“he would be better

Thereisalsotheextratimethatisneededtocareforonechildwhenyoualsohavetwootherstobein-volvedwith,andhowdoyoucompletethistaskandsleepmorethanonceeverythreedays?Thedailyaddi-tionofnursestoassistwithactivitiesofdailylivingandhelpwithventilatorsettings,feedingsupplies,coughassistmachinesandthestockingandapplicationofasmallerversionofamedicalstepdownunitweregrad-uallyacceptedasnormalandeverydayoccurrencesbyourentirefamily. ThenwetookatriptovisitapumpkinfarminGeor-gia.AsweweretransferringTrippfromthevantohiswheelchair,Ifeltithappen-themostexcruciatingpaininmybodythathaseverbeeninmymemory.Asmostofuswoulddo,andknowingthatwewerenotclosetoanymedicalor chiropracticprofessionals, I hopedandprayeditwouldjustgoaway.Afterafewminutesofbeingunabletomove,sitorbarelybreathe,Ifinallywasabletofunctionsomeandpreservetherestofthefamilytimeroadtripwhileenduringthepain. Uponreturninghometotheoffice,therealizationofbeingself-employedwithmultipleobligations,andknowingthat if Iamnotworkingthere isnopractice income,Iwentbacktoworkwhilesufferingwiththepain. Ididgetsomerelieffromadjustments,butnottotalorenduring.Aftermonthsoftryingtoworkandconser-vative care, I resigned to the process of an MRI andfurthertesting.ThediagnosiswasL4&L5dischernia-tionswithprolapseandthebeginningoflumbarspinedegenerativearthritiscausingforaminaencroachment.The initial shock of hearing these words was againabatedbythemaleresponseinmethatIhadrespon-sibilities,bills,obligations,andtheneedtosupplymypartformyfamily.Perhapssomeofyoucanrelate,sokeepreading.

The Day I heard the words, “Doc, you have
adjusted your last patient”
is one that I will never forget.
Ihavewrittenthistosay that this headstrongattitude, even with thebest of intentions, wasjustasinstrumentalinthe“rest of my story”astheoriginal injury. For threeyears I tried to maintainthepractice volumenec-essary not only to keepthe practice afloat butalso to meet the ever-increasing expendituresathome. Thiswasbecoming toughasmyability tocompleteeachdaywastransitioningfromdifficulttonearlyimpossibleaslegnumbnesswasjoinedbyfootdrop,asthesciaticandspinalnerveswerebecomingmore inflameddue to the combined effects of com-pression from the spurs and movement required forpatientcare.Whenadjustmentsalonewerenotsuc-cessful in maintaining my ability to walk, much lesspractice,Isoughtasurgicalconsultation.Wehadmetmanyaspatientsandasmedicalprovidersforourson.

Life after practice, concluded,ThevisitwhereIheardthewords,“Doc, you have adjusted your last patient”isonethatIwillneverforget.SurgerywasscheduledforMarch30,2011andwassuccessful ingivingmebacktheuseofmyleg,butwiththedegreeofarthriticchanges,areturntopracticewasnotpossible. Myadvicetoyouwouldbetohaveasuccessionplaninplaceandsitdownwithyourfamilytomodifyandupdateit inatimelymanner.Ourplanhadbeentoseethepracticeandofficepayoffthehouse(eventually)andlivetherefortherestofourlives.Whenyouhavetoselleverythinginahurry,othersknowyourdesperation.Iwasabletopracticefor25years,almosttotheday,inawonderfulcommunitythatIhavelivedinmywholelife.ItreatedpeoplehowIwouldliketobetreatedandwasneveronethatwasintomultiplevisitplans.Wescheduledcaretorelievepainandrecommendedthattheycomebackwhentheyneededusorontheirschedule.Thisworkedforus.WewereabletofindanotherDCwhoagreedtotreatour4,000+patients,andthatdoctorreceivedall their files,x-raysandpatientdata. Werentedtheofficespaceforayear,andeventuallysoldit.Needlesstosay,ourhomewasnotpaidfor,andIwasoutofmyprofession. Thisiswhereitnotonlygetsinteresting,butitgetsmiraculous!IdidfindworkasHealthandNutritionSpecialistatalocaleducationprogram,IwasanAnatomy,PhysiologyandBiology lab instructoratour localcommunitycol-lege,andIhelpedafriendwhoneededanInternetManagerforacardealer-shipinourareaforsixmonths,duringwhichtimeIsold36newandusedcars.Presently,IserveastheAssistanttotheCountyMayorandthePublicInforma-tion Officer for our county as well as the Emergency ManagementAgency.ThesevariedopportunitieshaveeachbeenpresentedtomeasInotonlyseek
to remain active but also to contribute to ourfamilyandcommunityinaChristianandpositivemanner. IamlivingproofthatGod’sWordisnotonlyinspired, it is the TRUTH. Has this path beeneasy? No. Aretheretimesthat Iwish Icouldgoback topracticeandhelp thepatients thatwe were blessed with before? Yes. Is there adramatic decrease in salary and “take home pay?”Yes.Hasthereeverbeenatimethatwewonderedwherethenextmealormoneyforthenextco-payormedicalprocedurewouldcomefrom?Yes.YetGod’sWordhasalsobeenprov-entobetruewhenyouseekfirstHisKingdom,payyourtithes,anddesiretohelpotherswhileprovidingforyourown.ALLworkisgoodand,whenyou remember that youareworking forHimandnotforman,youwillbeblessed.Thereisnologicalexplanationastohoweachofourbillsaremet,butIcantellyouthatnotonlyhavetheybeenmet,weenjoythepeacethatcanonlybe foundthroughHim. Weareblessed,and IhopethatyoutakethetimetodaytoappreciateyourblessingsandtopracticetheASKmethodofprayer:
