Inverter Compressors:Improving the Efficiency of Refrigerators & Freezers

Traditional fridge compressors are either on or off; there's no ibetween. They pump cold air into your fridge, and once the interior cold enough, they shut off. As the air warms up, they have to turn oagain to start pumping more cold air to make up for the increase temperature. This method isn't exactly that efficient, since the warminand cooling of the air can cause pretty substantial degree fluctuatiothat can adversely affect the quality of your food. It's also bad for yoelectric bill; since the compressor has to launch itself into overdrivevery time it turns on to prevent even more drastic temperature shif

than what is already occurring. Add to that the noise that compressomake and you have a piece of technology that needs some drastimprovements.

The digital inverter compressor abandons the "on/off" approach in fav

of an "always on" style of temperature management. That may sound lik

an inevitably large drain on your electricity, but it's actually not. Th

digital compressor in fridges is constantly monitoring intern

temperature, gradually slowing or speeding up as needed in order

maintain equilibrium. This means that, overall the compressor doesn

have to work as hard since temperatures aren't falling out of whack as often. Companies boast significant energ

    savings.

A constantly maintained temperature is better for food storage: fridge fluctuations cause food to spoil faster, wh

unstable freezers can lead to some pretty nasty freezer burn. While energy efficiency may save you some mone

in your utility costs, improved food preservation is definitely going to result in pretty hefty reductions in your foo

bill...just don't keep more food even longer simply because you can, it would defeat the whole point.

Digital compressor will reduce temperature fluctuation down to no more than two degrees; they even promised

variance of just one degree. These are very impressive claims, and the value of this innovation (if it works) will b

huge. When you consider the warranty policies that these companies are offering, you get an idea of just ho

important they think this is: manufacturers provide a 10/12 year warranty on their new compressors.

As the heart of the refrigeration system, the compressor is the workhorse behind the stable operation of th

refrigerator or freezer. Most home-use refrigerators and freezers today utilize single speed compressors which a

either on or off and can only operate at one speed This type of performance does not allow flexible operation

adapt to the different usage conditions such appliances experience during the day, nor does it efficiently utiliz

electric power once the unit is at a steady state.Inverter is a solution for providing more flexible operation of th

compressor, thereby significantly increasing the overall appliance efficiency. Compared to the traditional sing

speed compressor, the inverter compressor can run at a number of desired speeds, depending on how th

refrigerator is being used by the consumer. This provides options for quick pull down or freezing, or to run at

very low speed once the cabinet is at a steady state, thereby significantly reducing energy consumption. Whe

applying an inverter compressor in a refrigeration system, one must take a number of factors into account. Th

cooling load requirement of the cabinet must be considered. In addition, in order to maintain the durability an

reliability of the compressor, one needs to make sure of the pressures and temperatures of the compresso

    particularly at low speeds.

Generally refrigerators are designed to secure their specific cooling performance when the load is highest (i.

summer). Therefore it is necessary to select a compressor with the freezing capacity equivalent to the maximu

cooling load of the static cooling load plus the door open-shut load. Historically then refrigerators were bein

designed with compressors to accommodate the maximum freezing capacity that the refrigeration system wou

require. In reality, however, the actual load on the refrigerator is not this large at all times. In fact, the load seen b

the unit for most of the year is actually much smaller. But the freezing capacity of the compressor is consta

irrespective of the actual load, so it will be excessive under the usual or more normal cooling operation. Th

results in a great loss of efficiency due to the high compression ratio. Its wasted energy.

In order to maximize on the efficiency of the refrigerator, the ideal solution would be to reduce the standard stat

cooling load of the refrigerator. Careful consideration of the design can accomplish this, including the adoption

better insulation as well as vacuum insulation panels. By reducing the static load requirement, the cylinder volum

of the compressor can be reduced as less capacity will be required, even at peak load conditions. Aside from th

downsizing, under usual load conditions, less freezing capacity is required.

A normal single speed compressor can only operate at one speed with one capacity. By varying the speed of th

inverter compressor, to a lower speed so as to match the cooling load that is required, you maximize on efficienc

Even in cases where the cylinder volume or displacement size of the compressor can not be reduced due t

design limitations in reducing the static load, the benefit of employing an inverter compressor can be realized.

single speed compressor must cycle on and off based on the cooling capacity needs of the refrigeration systemRegardless of the time of day or the cooling capacity required, the compressor can only rotate at one speed. S

during the daytime, when there is more activity and more cooling capacity is required, the compressor can on

run at one speed and deliver a set cooling capacity. By varying the speed of the inverter compressor, the coolin

capacity can be tailored to the cabinets need at that time. For example, if the door is left open for a period of tim

due to loading of the cabinet, the compressor can run at a high speed to provide maximum cooling, in some case

possibly more than what the conventional single speed compressor could deliver. Likewise the compressor ca

run at gradually lower speeds as the need for cooling capacity diminishes. Since the conventional compressor ca

only operate at one speed, it is during these periods that there is a significant benefit in terms of energy efficienc

At night when there is little activity, a conventional single speed compressor would still have to cycle on and o

again at a constant cooling capacity, when the freezer/refrigerator compartment temperature goes below a certalevel. The inverter compressor can operate at a very low speed during this time, providing just enough coolin

capacity to maintain the cabinets temperature. It is during these periods where the maximum energy efficienc

benefit can be realized. All compressors will cycle on and off based on the temperature level in the cabinet an

the cooling capacity required. An inverter compressor, by running at a low speed, can actually be run for a long

period of time, but the result would still be reduced energy consumption as the input watts required for the low

speed operation are much lower. With the on and off cycling of the compressor, and with only one large coolin

capacity available, the temperature fluctuates quite a bit. The temperature can be kept much more stable b

employing an inverter compressor which can be run at a much lower speed and for longer cycle times. Th

combination of low speed operation and longer cycle times also improves the overall noise levels of th

refrigerator. Single speed compressors typically produce noticeable start-up noise as they cycle from off to f

speed operation and again from full speed to off at the end of the cycle. The inverter compressor starts up at lo

speed so the transition noise is minimal. The long cycle times at low speed produce obvious noise advantage

compared to the high speed operation of the single speed compressor. In designing the inverter compressor,

was clear that operation at low rotational speeds could provide many benefits. However it is at these low rotatio

speeds that stresses can act upon the compressor, resulting in wear due to a shortage of oil supply. Therefore

was critical to design the inverter compressor in such a way to allow for proper lubrication, even at lower speed

Great care was taken in designing the oil pick up system as well as the pathway for distribution of the oil over

critical parts. For each type and size of inverter compressor, there are clear specifications for the condensing, an

evaporating pressures, as well as the Motor winding and discharge temperatures, for each speed range of th

compressor. As the oil circulation is greater at higher speeds, the pressures and temperatures the compress

can withstand are greater. As the compressor speed slows, correspondingly the maximum allowable pressure

and temperatures decrease. It is possible to design a very effective and efficient refrigeration system using a

inverter compressor. Being able to vary the speed, and thereby the capacity, to accommodate only the coolin

load that is necessary provides for much better temperature performance in the cabinet, and much lower energ

    usage.

Further design enhancements which could allow for lowering the static load requirements of the system wou

also provide for employment of smaller displacement compressors, further reducing energy consumption. Th

combined with utilization of superior insulation technology such as vacuum insulation panels and installation

variable speed fan motors can lead to ultra high efficiency refrigeration systems. (Panasonic/Samsun

HOW MUCH DOES THE PRAYER WEIGH?

A poorly dressed lady with a look of defeat on her face, walked into a grocery store. She approached the owner othe store in a most humble manner and asked if he would her charge a few groceries. She softly explained thaher husband was very ill and unable to work; they have seven children and they needed food. The grocer scoffed at her and requested her to leave the store. Visualizing the family needs, she said:Please sIll bring you the money as soon as I can. The grocer told her he could not give her credit, as she did not havecharge account at his store.Standing beside the counter was a customer who overheard the conversation. He walked forward and told thgrocer that he would stand good for whatever she needed for her family. The grocer said in a reluctant voice, Do you have a grocery list? The lady replied, Yes.O.K. he said, put your grocery list on the scales and whatever your grocery list weighs, I will give you thamount in groceries. The lady hesitated a moment with a bowed head, then she reached into her purse and took out a piece of papeand scribbled something on it. She then laid the piece of paper on the scale carefully with her head still bowed. The eyes of the grocer and the customer showed amazement when the scale went down and stayed down. Thgrocer, staring at the scales, turned slowly to the customer and said begrudgingly,I cant believe it. The customsmiled and the grocer started putting groceries on the other side of the scales. The scale did not balance so he continued to put more and more groceries on them until the scale could hold nmore. The grocer stood in utter disgust. Finally he grabbed the piece of paper from the scale and looked at it wigreater amazement. It was not a grocery list. It was a prayer which said;Dear Lord, you know my needs and I am leaving this in youhands.

The grocer gave her the groceries that he gathered and stood in silence. The lady thanked him and left the storThe customer handed a fifty-dollar bill to the grocer and said, It was worth every cent of it.

Among Nelson Mandelas many achievements, two stand out. First, hwas the worlds most inspiring example of fortitude, magnanimity andignity in the face of oppression. Serving more than 27 years in prison fhis belief that all men and women are created equal. During the brutyears of his imprisonment on Robben Island, thanks to his own patienchumour and capacity for forgiveness, he seemed freer behind bars thathe men who kept him there, locked up as they were in their own sedemeaning prejudices. Indeed, the warders were among those who camto admire him most.

Second and little short of miraculous, was the way in which hengineered and oversaw South Africas transformation from a byword fnastiness and narrowness into, at least in intent, a rainbow nation which people, no matter what their colour, were entitled to be treated wirespect. That the country has not always lived up to his standards goes show how high they were.As a politician, and as a man, Mandela had his contradictions. He wa

neither a genius nor, as he often said himself, a saint. The sense of anger with which his early writings werinfused was justifiable. His charisma was evident from his youth. He was a born leader who feared noboddebased himself before no one and never lost his sense of humour. He was handsome and comfortable in hown skin. In a country in which myth of racial superiority was enshrined in law, he never for a moment doubted hright and that of all his compatriots to equal treatment. Perhaps no less remarkably, once the majority of citizen

were able to have their say he never for a moment denied the right of white compatriots to equality. For all thhumiliation he suffered at the hands of white racists before he was released in 1990, he was never animated bfeelings of revenge. He was himself utterly without prejudice, which is why he became a symbol of tolerance an

STRENGTHENING THE REGULATORY NETWORK Suresh PrabhuIn the early to late 1990s, Indian Power sector was in a state of disrepair. It was also during this period that Indstarted out on the path of liberalizing the economy with the goal of achieving a growth rate above the historic threpercent. To fuel the economic growth, India needed an important ingredient-Electricity.The reforms were in line with the Orissa reforms. The basic idea was to unbundle the functions of GeneratioTransmission and Distribution under the State electricity Boards into separate entities with the aim of identifyinproblems in the Distribution sector and bringing investments into the Generation sector. The unbundling was to b

supported by bringing the entire electricity business under the independent agency with little or no controls Governments and close to complete autonomy. The independent agency was given vast powers like-determininElectricity tariff. Electricity generation and supply to consumers were to take place in a transparent manner undPublic scrutiny. To ensure that the stated goals of reforms were achieved, it was necessary to unburden thfinancially starved distributors. So the Government of India introduced incentivized schemes of composite loansgrants for accelerated Power Development. In the backdrop of the Enron fiasco, there was no new investment in this sector. The State Electricity Boards we(still) facing a cash crunch. It was during 1997-98 that the country was poised to introduce more reforms in the Power sector and began i

journey with the enactment of Electricity Regulatory Commissions Act. The primary objective of the Power sectreforms and the Regulatory Commissions Act was to make the Electricity sector free from Governmental contrby giving the Regulators autonomy in deciding tariff and undertaking activities to reduce Transmission an

Distribution losses. This has widely come to be known as the second phase of the Reforms. We are in the fifteenth year since the enactment of the Regulatory Commissions Act. We have 27 Regulators aState and Central levels overseeing the Electricity business in their respective jurisdictions. The business hagrown from 0.78lakhs MW to more than 2.5 lakhs MW. The per capita consumption has grown from 400kWh 1000kWh. The sector saw 40000MW capacity added in captive power. The Regulators now have 92geographical reach of the country and about 20 crores consumers in all categories from public works tagriculture to domestic and to industries. The question now to ask is: have we been successful in our mission to serve consumers, in ensuring reliabsupply of electricity at an affordable price and at the same time attract the desired investments by setting uregulators and granting autonomy?Though there are many positive outcomes from the reforms, a major goal of making electricity affordable to theconsumer is nowhere near realization. Analysis shows that one of the major impediments is the Technic

lossesin the system. The losses have gone up from 22% in 1995 to 27%. Some states report losses as high a

67%, most are in the range of 40%.A few states in South India have contained losses to 15%; the global standais 10%.The very objective of setting up the regulatory framework was for someone to keep tabs on all activities related Electricity business including efficiency. The Regulators approve tariff annually. Despite tariff hikes very feDistribution companies have reported profits. The other objective was to promote a Power Market. We have two exchanges to take care of real time surplupower. There are fifty traders. Traders collect margins from each sale. A market shows liquidity and volatility. allows buyers to access any market. Under ideal market conditions, the regulator cannot fix tariff.Cross subsidy is an issue in every market. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------MARRIAGE IS DIVINE IN ITS INSTITUTION, SACRED IN ITS UNION AND HOLY IN THE MYSTERY

When I got home that night my wife served dinner, I held her hand and said, Ive got something to teyou. She sat down and ate quietly. Again I observed the hate in her eyes.Suddenly I didnt know how to open my mouth. But I had to let her know what I was thinking aboudivorce. I raised the topic calmly. She didnt seem to be annoyed by my words, instead she asked msoftly, why?I avoided her question. This made her angry. She threw away the chopsticks and shouted at me, yo

are not a man! That night, we didnt talk to each other. She was weeping. I knew she wanted to find owhat had happened to our marriage. But I could hardly give her a satisfactory answer; she had lost mheart to Jane. I didnt love her any more. I just pitied her. With a deep sense of guilt, I drafted a divorce agreement which stated that she could own our housour car, and 30% stake of my company. She glanced at it and then tore it into pieces. The woman whhad spent ten years of her life with me had become a stranger. I felt sorry for her wasted time, resourceand energy but I could not take back what I had said for I loved Jane so dearly. Finally she cried loudin front of me, which was what I had expected to see. To me her cry was actually a kind of release. Thidea of divorce which had obsessed me for several weeks seemed to be firmer and clearer now.The next day, I came back home very late and found her writing something at the table. I didnt havsupper but went straight to sleep and fell asleep very fast because I was tired after an eventful day wit

Jane. When I woke up, she was still there at the table writing. I just did not care so I turned over and waasleep again. In the morning she presented her divorce conditions; she didnt want anything from me, but needed months notice before the divorce. She requested that in that one month we both struggle to live anormal a life as possible. Her reasons were simple; our son had his exams in a months time and shdidnt want to disrupt him with our broken marriage. This was agreeable to me. But she had something more, she asked me to recall how I had carried heinto our bridal room on our wedding day. She requested that every day for the months duration, I carher out of our bedroom to the front door in the morning! I thought she was going crazy. Just to make oulast days together bearable, I accepted her odd request.I told jane about my wifes divorce conditions. She laughed loudly and thought it was absurd. No matt

what trick she applies, she has to face the divorce, she said scornfully. My wife and I hadnt any body contact since my divorce intention was explicitly expressed. So whencarried her out on the first day, we both appeared clumsy. Our son clapped behind us, daddy is holdinmommy in his arms. His voice brought me a sense of pain. From the bedroom to the sitting room, theto the door, I walked over ten meters with her in my arms. She closed her eyes and said softly, dont teour son about the divorce'. I nodded, feeling somewhat upset. I put her down outside the door. She weto wait for the bus to work. I drove alone to office. On the second day, both of us acted much more easily. She leaned on my chest. I could smell thfragrance of her blouse. I realized she was not young any more. There were fine wrinkles on her faceher hair was graying! Our marriage had taken its toll on her. For a minute I wondered what I had done her.

On the fourth day, when I lifted her up, I felt a sense of intimacy returning. This was the woman who hagiven ten years of her life to me. On the fifth and sixth day, I realized that our intimacy was growinagain. I didnt tell Jane about this. It became easier to carry her as the month slipped by. Perhaps theveryday workout made me stronger. She was choosing what to wear one morning. She tried on quite a few dresses but could not find suitable one. Then she sighed, all my dresses have grown bigger. Suddenly I realized that she hagrown so thin, that was the reason why I could carry her more easily.Suddenly it hit me. She had buried so much pain and bitterness in her heart. Subconsciously I reacheout and touched her head. Our son came in at the moment and said, Dad, its time to carry mom out. To him seeing his fathecarrying his mother out had become an essential part of his life. My wife gestured to our son to comcloser and hugged him tightly. I turned my face away because I was afraid I might change my mind athis last minute. I then held her in my arms, walking from the bedroom, through the sitting room, to thhallway. Her hand surrounded my neck softly and naturally; it was just like our wedding day.But her much lighter weight made me sad. On the last day, when I held her in my arms I could hardmove a step. Our son had gone to school. I held her tightly and said, I hadnt noticed that our life lackeintimacy. I drove to office. I jumped out of the car swiftly without locking the door. I was afraid any delawould make me change my mind. I walked upstairs. Jane opened the door and I said to her, SorrJane, I do not want the divorce any more. She looked at me, astonished, and then touched my forehead. Do you have a fever?, she said. I moveher hand off my head. Sorry, Jane, I wont divorce. My marriage life was boring probably because shand I didnt value the details of our lives, not because we didnt love each other anymore. Now I realizthat since I carried her into my home on our wedding day, I am supposed to hold her until death do uapart. Jane seemed to suddenly wake up. She gave me a loud slap and then slammed the door anburst into tears. I walked downstairs and drove away. At the floral shop on the way, I ordered a bouqueof flowers for my wife. Salesgirl asked me what to write on the card. I smiled and wrote, Ill carry yoout every morning until death do us apart. That evening I arrived home, flowers in my hands, a smile on my face, I run upstairs, only to find my wifin the bed - dead. My wife had been fighting cancer for months and I was so busy with Jane to evenotice. She knew that she would die soon, and she wanted to save me from whatever negative reactiofrom our son, in case we push through with the divorce. At least in the eyes of our son I am a lovinhusband. The small details of your lives are what really matter in a relationship. It is not the mansion, the ca

property, the money in the bank. These create environment conducive for happiness but cannot givhappiness in themselves. So find time to be your spouses friend and do those little things for each other that build intimacy. Dhave a real happy marriage! (Courtesy: Doctors Hangout.com) A.Suh

PENSION MUSINGSDefined Benefit Pension has been replaced by Defined Contribution Pension. The former supports yountil death; the latter, only until the pension savings are exhausted.Researchers have postulated trends and traits that have surfaced in the recent decades. Thenthusiasm for early retirement (VRS) is on the wane; almost all nations witness higher work forcparticipation by older people. The share of 60-64 population with jobs was 23% in 2007; in 2011 it 47%. The continuing trend is: working longer / refusing to quit. The share of older persons leaving osuperannuation and placing exclusive dependence on savings and pension benefits is shrinking fast.Welfare measures for elder population, whose number is ever increasing, are getting increasingrestricted. A non-productive person might soon be referred to by the hated word in the banker

parlance: Non-Performing Asset! The growing number of elders in need of support from a decreasinnumber of young / middle-aged individuals is building up into a big problem nagging the brains oeveryone. With the facilities for education in the 20 thcentury, individuals spend more years in acquiring knowledgand skills, clipping years from their employment and forgoing the earnings. The nature of work is noanymore as strenuous as before. Advances in medicine have extended life expectancy substantiallThe cost of living is on the rise. Inflation is unbridled. Money value is fast eroding. Fear of cut-backs public programs and threat of economic uncertainty stares them on their face. The employee nearinsuperannuation thinks that the invaluable skills and experience he amassed would be more productiveutilized in his field of expertise and he has a reasonable right to earn full salary for a few more years.Lengthening of working lives is a good thing, with one big caveat. First the benefit: As population ag

countries can no longer afford to have growing number of elderly supported bya declining number young and middle-aged individuals.Welfare states are often strained predominantly due to costs of caring for the elderly. People need tremain productive for longer. The caveat: The transition is happening at an awful time. Without strongeconomic recoveries, jobs taken by older workers contribute to higher unemployment of the younaspirants.

A judge of Santa Clara county superior court ruled that the city could not cut pensions, even though the votepassed a referendum that gave the city power to cut workers pay and reduce their pensions in order to balancthe budget; the city can cut workers salary to pay for higher retirement costs. An artificial heart that can give patients up to five years of extra life has been successfully implantefor the first time. The heart powered by watch-style battery that can be worn externally was put into a 7year-old patient at the George Pompidou Hospital in Paris. It uses a range of bio materials, includinbovine tissue, to reduce the likelihood of the body rejecting it.Unlike previous artificial hearts created mainly for temporary use, the design by the French Carmabiomedical firm is intended to replace a real heart for as many as five years.
