Description
Matrix linear actuators have been de-
signed in particular for seating and
reclining operations (hospital beds). The
drive is provided by a DC motor with
worm gear which acts on a trapezoidal
threaded spindle drive system (type B and
C) or ball screw system (type A). The
actuators are protected against over-
heating by the SKF control units. When
used in stand-alone operation, built-in or
external current cut-off Printed Circuit
Boards (PCBs) need to be used. Matrix
actuators employ push/pull technology.
The self-locking function is ensured by
means of the built-in brake. Furthermore,
all actuators are protected against
overload by means of a safety nut and a
static safety factor of 4. The actuators
comply with EN 60601-1 (1990), EN
60601-2-38 (1996) (only with PUR-
mains cable) and UL 2601. All forces are
transmitted via metal parts. High-quality
die-cast metal parts, stainless steel push
tubes and ultrasonic welded plastic parts
guarantee high performance and
compliance with degree of protection
IP66S. Stroke and mounting lengths can
be selected in increments of 50 mm over
the range of 50 to 400 mm and in
increments of 100 mm over the range of
400 to 700 mm. Special strokes and
mounting lengths on request.

Electrical connection
The motor is connected via the Magnetic
control unit. The plug must be fitted into
the relevant slot in the control unit. The
actuators are controlled by means of the
appropriate control elements. When the
actuators are operated without a control
unit, it is essential that built-in or external
cut-off PCBs are used. The actuators are
not fitted with limit switches. Cut-off is
therefore by means of the control unit or
current cut-off PCBs. Overload and/or
damages can therefore be ruled out if
used as recommended. In industrial
applications with the need of high lifetime,
external limit switches must be provided.
The push force is reduced by 50 % when
operated in parallel with the SKF control
units (exception: control units with
enhanced power).
Installation
The actuator is secured to the fork heads
by means of bolts. It is important here to
ensure that the load which is to be moved
acts centrally onto the push tube. No
lateral forces may act on the push tube
whatever the orientation, and the actuator
must not be installed off-centre. The
technical instructions must be observed
for installation and putting into service.
Any applications which do not comply with
these technical instructions must be
discussed first with the manufacturer.
Applications which involve a risk of
personal injury must be made safe by the
user.
Maintenance
The Matrix requires no maintenance
during its lifetime. The expectable lifetime
depends on the particular model and the
application. The user must conduct his
own tests in this regard. Faulty actuators
may only be opened and repaired at our
factory.

other accessories, actuators, control units
and control elements.

Description
Matrix linear actuators have been de-
signed in particular for seating and
reclining operations (hospital beds).
MAX6 actuators are connected directly to
the mains and can be used as either
stand-alone units or in master/slave
configurations with a second DC actuator
(Matrix or Telemag). They are controlled
directly by means of a control element.
The simple plug & play system cuts the
user’s installation time and saves the
space otherwise required for a separate
control unit. The switched power supply
integrated into the housing powers a DC
motor with worm gear which acts on a
trapezoidal threaded spindle drive system
(type B and C) or ball screw system (type
A). The control unit with integrated current
cut-off is integrated into the motor
housing. Matrix actuators employ push/
pull technology. The self-locking function
is ensured by means of the built-in brake.

Electrical connection
The electrical connection is made by
means of the mains cable. The actuator
is available for mains voltages of
230 V/50 Hz and 120 V/60 Hz. MAX6
actuators can be controlled using either a
pneumatic hand switch or foot switch (not
powered) or a low-voltage control
element. Hand switches and foot switches
are plugged directly into the motor
housing. The master/slave configuration
requires a two-channel low-voltage
control element. Direct control is also
possible via a 4-wire mains connecting
cable. The customer must ensure that
wiring and cut-off functions comply with
requirements.
Installation
The actuator is secured to the fork heads
by means of bolts. It is important here to
ensure that the load which is to be moved
acts centrally onto the push tube. No
lateral forces may act on the push tube
whatever the orientation, and the actuator

these technical instructions must be
discussed first with the manufacturer.
Applications which involve a risk of
personal injury must be made safe by the
user.
Maintenance
The Matrix requires no maintenance
during its lifetime. The expected lifetime
depends on the particular model and the
application. The user must conduct his
own tests in this regard. Faulty actuators
may only be opened and repaired at our
factory.

Quick release
Especially for use in hospital beds, a
mechanical quick release for the rapid
lowering of the bed back and foot sections
is available for type C actuators. With quick
release on push (motor direction pull), the
safety factor is reduced to 1.5. In actuator
variants C, this release also boasts an
integrated mechanical anti-pinching
protection. Type A and type B actuators
are available with mechanical anti-
pinching protection only. The retracted
length is correspondingly longer and can
be procured from the selection tables. The
lowering speed following release can be
regulated by the adjustment screws. Quick
releases are available in two variants.
Please consult the manufacturer if these
variants are to be used with accessories.
Linear actuatorsMATRIX Accessories
Electric anti-pinching protection
The actuators can be equipped with an
electric anti-pinching protection (safety
cut-off) for retraction movements. A
special rear fork head with an oblong hole
and an integrated cut-off pin ensures
actuator shutdown via a micro-switch. In
the event of pinching, the pin lifts off the
attachment bolt and causes the shutdown.
Actuators with motor direction pull are
installed inverted and have special internal
wiring.
Bearing insert for fork head
Plastic inserts for the fork heads are
supplied as standard. When using these
components, the dimensions of the
attachments must be adjusted according
to dimensional drawing. See data sheets

ZDV current cut-off PCB
When the DC actuators are operated
without KOM control units, a separate
current cut-off PCB is required. This cut-
off PCB can be supplied built into the
drive, externally or in a special ZDV
housing. The use of this PCB protects the
actuator against overload. The current
values on the cut-off PCB are pre-set at
the potentiometer. Connection and wiring
is according to a special scheme. The
integrated fuse is 10 A inert.
Encoder
The DC actuators can be supplied with
integrated mechanical 1-channel
encoders. The encoder has 8 pulses/
revolution at the spindle, current 10-100
mA, voltage 24 V. Signalling is via the 3-
pole standard cable with jack plug. This
actuator version can be operated with the
processor control or with special customer
control units.
External limit switch ZSC
An external limit switch connection for
monitoring particular functions can be
added in connection with either a KOM
control unit or an SPP locking device
Pull relief ZBE
EN 60601-1 stipulates that net cables
must be protected with an additional pull
relief. These pull relief clamps are available
with and without anti-torsion device. They
can be supplied for special customized
wiring.
