M-227 Servo Motor ActuatorsHigh-Resolution DC-Mike Actuators

M-227 are ultra-high-resolutionlinear actuators providing lin-ear motion up to 50 mm withsub-micron resolution in acompact package. They consistof a micrometer with non-rotat-ing tip, driven by a closed-loopDC-motor/gearhead combina-tion with motor-shaft-mountedhigh-resolution encoder (2048counts/rev.).

Non-Rotating Tip

Compared to conventionalrotating-tip micrometer drivesthe non-rotating-tip designoffers several advantages; iteliminates:

 Torque-induced stage platform tilt

Sinusoidal motion errors Wear at the contact point Tip-angle-dependent wobble

M-227 actuators provide a cost-effective solution for industrialand OEM environments. Basedon the successful M-222/M-226series which they replace, M-227 DC Mikes offer both im-proved specs and reducedcosts. The combination of anextremely low stiction/frictionconstruction and high-resolu-tion encoder allows for a mini-mum incremental motion of 50 nanometers at speeds up to1 mm/sec.

Integrated Line Drivers

Each actuator includes an inte-grated 0.1 m cable with 15-pinsub-D connector and a 3 mextension cable. The connectorfeatures integrated line driversfor cable lengths up to 10 me-ters between actuator and con-troller.

High-Resolution Piezo Option

All models come with standardflat tips. A variety of other tipsare also available, such as apiezoelectric tip featuring 20µm travel with sub-nanometerresolution for dynamic scan-ning and tracking (see page7-85).

For mounting, the DC-Mikesare clamped around the 19 mmdiameter section. High forcesaround the 16 mm diametersection must be avoided, asmust be lateral forces on thetip.

Stepper-motor-driven versionsof the M-227 are available onrequest. For higher loads andintegrated limit switches referto the M-230 and M-235 (seepages 7-78 and 7-82).

M-674 PILine® RodDrives repre-sent a level of integration be-tween PILine® OEM piezo linearmotors such as P-664 and guid-ed micropositioning systemssuch as the M-682 seriesstages. RodDrives may replace classi-cal drive elements like rotarymotor/leadscrew assemblies,or magnetic linear drives inte-grated into a micropositioner.

They consist of a rod which ispreloaded by piezo linear mo-tors from two sides. Depend-ing on the way of integration, either the rod or the motorblock is coupled to the movingplatform.

Advantages of PILine®

Micropositioning Systems

The ultrasonic piezoceramicdrives used in PILine® micro-positioners have a number of advantages over classicaldrives:

 Higher Accelerations, up to10 g

Speeds up to 500 mm/s Small Form Factor Self-Locking When Powered

Down No Shafts, Gears or Other

Rotating Parts Non-Magnetic and Vacuum

Compatible Drive Principle

Working Principle

RodDrives employ a patentedultrasonic drive developed byPI. The highly compact, inte-grated P-664 piezomotors canprovide velocities of 450 mm/s,together with high resolutionand holding force. The maxi-mum travel is determined bythe length of the rod and is basically unlimited. Cus-tomized adaptations in termsof operating and holding forceare feasible by varying typeand number of motors used.Because the integrated ceramicmotors are preloaded againstthe rod, RodDrives resistmotion with an intrinsic hold-ing force when at rest. Theresult is very high position sta-bility without the heat dissipa-tion common with convention-al linear motors. Furthermore, there are no gears, leadscrewsor other mechanical compo-nents to contribute play orbacklash.

Variety of Drivers / Controllers

PILine® piezomotors require adrive electronics for excitingthe ultrasonic oscillations. Thedrive electronics is available asOEM board, stand-alone deviceor integrated inside a closed-loop motion controller and therefore not included in thedelivery.

Closed-Loop Operation:

Optimized for High Velocity

and Rapid Step/Settling

Together with a position sen-sor, RodDrives can be operat-ed in closed-loop with the C-866.D64 piezo motor con-troller. This specialized servo-controller also integrated themotor drive electronics andenables highly constant speedsup to 350 mm/s with very shortsettling times (10´s of msecs).RodDrives can also be operat-ed with conventional servo-controllers. In this case, the C-185 (to be ordered separate-ly) external drive electronics isrequired which accepts a ±10 Vanalog signal from the con-troller.

P-652 Miniature Ultrasonic Motor ActuatorCost-Effective PILine® Piezo Ceramic Linear Drive for High Volume Applications

P-652 PILine® OEM piezomotordrives are ideal for OEM appli-cations where space is limitedand moved masses are small. These minute linear position-ers can be used to replace clas-sical drive elements like minia-turized motor/spindle systemsor other linear motors, whichP-652 outclasses with its speedof up to 80 mm/s. The basicadvantages PILine® piezo linearmotors offer compared to clas-sical drives are:

High velocities Compact design High push/pull and holding

forces relative to the drivesize

The integration of P-652 in anapplication is simple, becausethe moving slider and the piezoactuator are delivered assem-bled as a unit. All that remainsis to provide for mounting the

stator, affixing the load to theslider and making the electricalconnections. The motors are designed formoving small objects such asglass fibers, optical, micro- orelectro-mechanical elementsfast and precisely.

Working Principle

P-652 drives employ a new, patented, ultrasonic piezomo-tor drive developed by PI. Thehighly compact, integratedpiezomotor can provide accel-erations of up to 2.5 g andvelocities of up to 80 mm/stogether with high position res-olution and—considering itslength of only 9 mm—highholding force. Because theceramic stator is pressedagainst the slider, piezomotordrives resist motion with anintrinsic holding force whenthe unit is at rest. The result isvery high position stability

without the heat dissipationcommon in conventional linearmotors. During operation, theoscillating piezoceramic movesthe slider over the length of themotor. There are no gears, leadscrews or other mechani-cal components to contributeplay or backlash.

Operation with conventional

controllers

The high-frequency oscilla-tions for the PILine® motors arecreated by driver electronics, which can in turn be controlledby short pulses as low as 3 V.The output frequency of thedriver electronics self-adjuststo the resonant frequency ofthe motor ceramic, so no indi-vidual tuning is necessary.

M-664 Ceramic Ultrasonic Motor Linear SlideLow-Profile High-Speed PILine® Translation Stage with Linearencoder

M-664 micropositioning sys-tems are low-profile, high-accuracy translation stageswith piezo linear encoders. TheM-664 stage is next-larger inthe series of piezomotor-drivenstages of which the M-663 isthe smallest.

For improved guiding accura-cy, the M-664 uses two crossedroller bearings mounted onground aluminum profiles. Theintegrated P-664 PILine® linearmotor can generate forces upto 6 N and maximum closed-loop velocities to 400 mm/sover a 25 mm travel range.

Advantages of PILine®

Micropositioning Systems

The ultrasonic piezoceramicdrives used in PILine® micro-positioners have a number of advantages over classicaldrives: Higher Accelerations,

up to 10 g Speeds up to 500 mm/s Small Form Factor Self-Locking When Powered

Down

No Shafts, Gears or OtherRotating Parts

 Non-Magnetic and Vacuum-Compatible Drive Principle

Optimized Controller and

Drive Electronics

PILine® motors require a spe-cial drive electronics to gener-ate the ultrasonic oscillationsfor piezoceramic element. Foroptimum performance thehighly specialized C-866 mo-tion controller is recommend-ed. This sophisticated con-troller also integrates the driveelectronics. Furthermore, thecontroller has a number of spe-cial features, including dy-namic parameter switching foran optimized high-speed mo-tion and settling behavior totake into account the motioncharacteristics typical ofpiezomotors. The broad-bandencoder input (35 MHz) sup-ports the outstanding highaccelerations and velocities of

PILine® drives at high resolu-tions.

Optionally, for use with thirdparty servo controllers, the C-185 analog drive electronic(stand-alone unit) is available. It controls the motor speed byan analog ±10 V signal. Foroptimum performance thisdriver must be tuned togetherwith the stage and should beordered at the same time asthe motor/stage.

N-310 NEXACT® PiezoWalk® lin-ear drives feature travel rangesof 20 mm and push/pull forcecapacities to 10 N in a compactpackage of only 25 x 25 x 12 mm.With their high resolution,NEXACT® drives, are ideal forhigh-precision positioning overlong travel ranges.

The N-310 can be operated inopen-loop and closed-loop mo-de (with the addition of an ex-ternal position sensor). A varie-ty of NEXACT® controllers facil-itates the integration into micro-or nanopositioning applications.

Advantages of PiezoWalk®

piezo stepping drives

NEXLINE® and NEXACT® drivesoffer several advantages overtraditional drive technologies: Resolution in the picometer

range Compact dimensions High drive forces from ten

newtons (NEXACT®) up toseveral hundred newtons(NEXLINE®)

 High dynamic performancewith sub-microsecond res-ponse

Self-locking when powereddown; no holding current

Zero backlash, no wear ormaintenance, no mechani-cal components like gearsor leadscrews.

 Non-Magnetic and VacuumCompatible Operating Prin-ciple

Working Principle for

Application Flexibility

NEXACT® PiezoWalk® technolo-gy overcomes the limitationsof conventional nanoposition-ing drives and combines virtu-ally unlimited travel rangeswith high stiffness in a verysmall package. Furthermore,NEXACT® actuators providepiezo-class resolution (farbelow one nanometer) andmillisecond responsiveness. The special drive designreduces the operating voltageto 40 V and below.

In operation, piezoceramicbending elements act on therunner, which is connected tothe moving part of the applica-tion. The length of the runnerdetermines the travel rangeand can be chosen as required. Force capacity, resolution andvelocity are determined by thepiezo geometry and drive elec-tronics and are scalable. Tomove the runner over longerdistances the steping mode isused, whereas for distancessmaller than one step, the lin-ear (analog) mode enableshigh-dynamics positioningwith resolutions far below onenanometer.

Wear and Maintenance-Free

In contrast to ordinary DC orstepper motor drives, thePiezoWalk® drives effect linearmotion directly, without theneed to transform rotation withmechanical elements such as gears, leadscrews and

nuts. Therefore, mechanicallimitations such as backlashand wear are eliminated andthe drive is maintenance-free.

Self-Locking PiezoWalk® Piezo

Stepping Drive

NEXLINE® and NEXACT® exhib-it high stiffness and are self-locking even when powereddown due to the clampingaction of the piezo actuators inthe mechanics. This entailsnanometer position stability atrest, with no heat dissipationor servo-dither.

Controller and Drive

Electronics appropriated for

the Application

NEXACT® actuators requirespecial drive electronics tocontrol the complex steppingsequences. The E-860 seriesNEXACT® controllers are avail-able in different open-andclosed-loop versions. Forexample, the E-861 includes acomplete NEXACT® servo-con-troller with low-noise, 24-bitdrivers and a powerful DSP. Italso comes with ample soft-ware for easy integration andhighly effective computer con-trol. For applications which donot require the highest resolu-tion lower-priced drive elec-tronics, ranging all the way toOEM boards, can be ordered.

N-214 Piezo Stepping Motor Linear ActuatorNEXLINE® High-Force Piezo Ceramic Nanopositioning Stepping Drive

The innovative N-214 / N-215NEXLINE® OEM linear drivesare ultra-precision nanoposi-tioning actuators with travelranges to 20 mm and push /pull forces to 400 N. The novel,patented NEXLINE® PiezoWalk®

drive design combines longtravel ranges with highmechanical stiffness and piezo-class resolution of better than0.1 nm.

PiezoWalk® supports two differ-ent motion modes: a high-reso-lution, high-dynamics shortrange (analog) mode and astepping mode with virtuallyunlimited travel range.

Two versions are available, theN-214 closed-loop model andN-215 open-loop model. Bothcan be operated with thesophisticated E-755 NEXLINE®

motion controller. The N-214 isequipped with a 5 nm resolu-tion linear encoder for long-range position control. Due toits low-noise, 24 bit D/A conver-ters, the E-755 controller canprovide picometer level resolu-tion in the highly-dynamicshort-range / dithering mode.

NEXLINE® Working Principle

for Application Flexibility

NEXLINE® PiezoWalk® drivescan be used wherever highloads must be positioned veryprecisely over long distancesand then perhaps subjected tosmall-amplitude dynamic ad-

justment, as for active vibra-tion control. By varying thecombination of longitudinaland shear piezo elements, thestep size, dynamic operatingrange (analog travel), clampingforce, speed and stiffness canall be optimized for a particularapplication.

NEXLINE® PiezoWalk® Piezo-ceramic clamping and shearelements act directly on a mov-ing runner that is coupled tothe moved object. While therunner can be moved largerdistances in step mode, analogoperation over a distance ofless than one step enableshigh-dynamics positioningwith resolutions far below one nanometer. The patentedPiezoWalk® overcomes the limi-tations of conventional nanopo-sitioning actuators and com-bines long travel ranges withhigh resolution and stiffness.

High-Resolution Dynamic

Operation

In analog mode the motion iseffectuated exclusively by thevery stiff shear elements, pro-viding a resonant frequency inthe direction of motion of sev-eral kilohertz. The motion reso-lution here is limited only bythe stability of the drive elec-tronics, or, in closed-loop oper-ation, by the sensor.

Basically Unlimited Travel

Range

Step mode involves a sequenceof coordinated shear and

clamping moves. That is whypiezo stepping drives have nointrinsic travel limitation andcan be used flexibly. The max.step frequency of 100 Hz and isdetermined by the controller. It allows velocities up to1 mm/s, depending on the stepsize and / or analog range.

Unlimited Lifetime

The application area of NEX-LINE® drives often lies in thedifficult-to-access internals ofmachines, where nanometer-realm adjustment and vibrationcancellation are required.

Long lifetime is therefore abasic requirement for NEX-LINE® actuators. To promotelong lifetime, the controller canreduce the operating voltageon all the piezo elements tozero at any position and stillmaintain the full holding force.

Lever amplified PiezoMove®

P-601 actuators combine largevertical travel ranges up to 480 µm and a high positioningaccuracy in a very compactdesign. With settling times ofonly a view milliseconds and aresolution in the sub-nanome-ter range they are well suitedfor static and dynamical appli-cations.

PiezoMove® P-601 lever ampli-fied actuators cover the rangebetween direct-driven pre-loaded piezo translators, suchas the P-840 series, and single-axis nanopositioning stages, like the P-611 series. Comparedto direct-driven piezo transla-

tors, lever amplified actuatorsoffer larger travel ranges, amuch higher lateral stiff-ness and guiding precision. Compared to single-axis nano-positioning stages, they offerclearly smaller dimensions.PiezoMove® lever amplifiedactuators feature a resolutionto 0.2 nm and a repeatability to8 nm.

With their highly precise, fric-tionless flexure guidance, avery high stiffness and excel-lent straightness of motion arereached. Together with theirsmall dimensions and the cost-effective design, the P-601lever amplified actuators areespecially suited for OEMapplications. Versions withstrain-gauge sensors (SGS) areequipped with a full bridge cir-cuit that is insensitive to ther-mal drift. Versions without asensor are also available foropen-loop applications. Inaddition to standard modelsmade from steel special ver-sions from Invar or aluminum,

as well as non-magnetic onesare available on request.

Superior Lifetime

Reliability is assured by the useof award-winning PICMA® mul-tilayer actuators, which areintegrated into a sophisticated,single-module, flexure guidingsystem. The PICMA® actuatorsfeature cofired ceramic encap-sulation and thus offer betterperformance and reliabilitythan conventional piezo actua-tors. The wire-EDM-cut flexu-res are FEA modeled to makethem extremely precise. Inaddition they are maintenance-free and not subject to wear.

Long Travel Range

The P-783 piezo nano-Z-axisstage is a compact, closed-loopactuator providing a position-ing and scanning range of upto 300 µm. It is designed forapplications with loads rang-ing from a few grams to a fewhundred grams.

Direct-Metrology LVDT Sensor

P-783 stages feature direct-measuring, non-contact LVDTsensors (direct metrology). Unlike indirect sensors, direct-metrology sensors measure

the actual distance betweenthe fixed frame and the movingpart of the stage. This results inhigher motion linearity, long-term stability, phase fidelity, and—because external distur-bances are seen by the sensorimmediately—a stiffer, faster-responding servo-loop. See p. 2-4 ff. and p. 5-2 ff. for moreinformation.

The ceramic-encapsulated PICMA® drivesare more robust than conven-tional piezo actuators, featur-ing superior lifetime and per-formance in both dynamic andstatic applications. Because guidance, actuatorsand sensors are all frictionlessand maintenance-free, thesenanopositioning systemsachieve outstanding levels ofreliability.

PIHera® Nanopositioning & Scanning Stages with Direct Metrology

P-620.1CD – P-629.1CD PIHera®

systems are piezo-nanoposi-tioning stages featuring travelranges from 50 to 1800 µm.Despite the increased travelranges, the units are extremelycompact and provide sub-nanometer resolution. Thelong travel range is achievedwith a newly designed, friction-free and extremely stiff flexuresystem, which also offers rapidresponse and excellent guidingaccuracy (typically less than 5 µrad pitch/yaw over the fulltravel range).

Superior Accuracy Through

Direct-Motion Metrology with

Capacitive Sensors

The capacitive-sensor-equippedversions provide motion lin-earity to 0.02 % with effectiveresolution in the sub-nanome-ter range. PI capacitive sensorsare absolute-measuring, direct-metrology devices that boast

very high bandwidth and ex-hibit no periodic errors. Unlike conventional sensors, capacitive sensors measurethe actual distance betweenthe fixed frame and the movingpart of the stage. They detecterrors contributed by all com-ponents in the drive train—from the actuator through theflexures to the platform. Thisresults in higher motion linear-ity, long-term stability, phasefidelity, and—because externaldisturbances are seen by thesensor immediately—a stiffer,faster-responding servo-loop.See p. 2-4 ff. and p. 5-2 ff. formore information.

Nanometer Precision in

Milliseconds

One of the advantages ofPIHera® stages over motor-driven positioning stages is the rapid response to inputchanges and fast and pre-cise settling behavior. The P-622.1CD, for example, cansettle to an accuracy of 10 nmin only 30 msec (other PIstages provide even fasterresponse)!

Increased Lifetime and Higher

Performance

PICMA® (PI Ceramic MonolithicActuator) piezo actuators arecharacterized by their high per-formance and reliability, evenin extremely harsh environ-

ments. They are superior toconventional multilayer actua-tors in industrial applicationsand high-endurance situations, where they show substantiallylonger lifetimes both in staticand dynamic operation.

New Production Process,

Optimized PZT Ceramics

PICMA® piezo actuators aremade from a ceramic materialin which the piezoceramicproperties such as stiffness, capacitance, displacement, temperature stability and life-time are optimally combined. The actuators’ monolithicdesign and special electrodestructure was made possibleby advances in productiontechnology. This developmentis just one reflection of themore than 30 years experience

PI has with thousands of in-dustrial PZT applications.

Increased Lifetime Through

Humidity Resistance

The monolithic ceramic-en-capsulated design providesbetter humidity protection thanpolymer-film insulation. Diffu-sion of water molecules intothe insulation layer, is greatlyreduced by the use of cofired, outer ceramic encapsulation.

High-Level Dynamic

Performance—Very Wide

Temperature Range

The high Curie temperature of320 °C gives PICMA® actuatorsa usable temperature rangeextending up to 150 °C. Thismeans that they can be operat-ed in hotter environments, orthey can be driven harder indynamic operation. With con-ventional multilayer actuators, heat generation—which is pro-portional to operating frequen-cy—either limits the operatingfrequency or duty cycle indynamic operation, or makesungainly cooling provisionsnecessary.

At the low end, operationdown to a few Kelvin is possi-ble (with reduction in perform-ance specifications).

Optimum UHV Compatibility—

No Outgassing

The lack of polymer insulationand the high Curie temperaturemake for optimal ultra-high-vacuum compatibility (no out-gassing / high bakeout temper-atures, up to 150 °C)

Ideal for Closed-Loop

Operation

The ceramic surface of theactuators is extremely wellsuited for use with resistive oroptical fiber strain gauge sen-sors. Such sensors can be eas-ily applied to the actuator sur-face and exhibit significantlyhigher stability and linearitythan with conventional poly-mer-insulated actuators.

Amplifiers, Drivers &

Controllers

PI offers a wide range of con-trol electronics for piezo actua-tors from low-power drivers to multichannel, closed-loop,digital controllers. Of course, PIalso designs custom amplifiersand controllers.

P-840 and P-841 preloadedpiezo translators are high-reso-lution linear actuators for staticand dynamic applications. They provide sub-millisecondresponse and sub-nanometerresolution. The internal springpreload makes them ideal fordynamic applications.

High Accuracy in Closed-Loop

Operation

The P-840 is specifically de-signed for open-loop opera-tion. For highest accuracy, theP-841 closed-loop versionincludes integrated ultra-high-resolution strain gauge posi-

tion sensors and operate withPI servo-control electronicssee page 4-19 ff. and page 4-31ff. for details).

Design

These translators are equippedwith highly reliable multilayerPZT ceramic stacks protectedby a non-magnetic stainlesssteel case with internal springpreload. The standard transla-tor tip and base have tappedholes. Select the P-840.95 balltip option to help decouple off-axis or torque loads from thetranslator.

Mounting

For push/pull forces up to 5 N,the translator can be mountedby clamping around the case. For larger forces, the translatormust be mounted by the base. For positioning of magneticparts the P-176.20 magneticadapter can be screwed intothe translator tip. For more mounting guidelinessee page 1-48.

P-225 and P-235 are preloaded,high-load piezo actuators(translators) for static anddynamic applications. Theyprovide sub-millisecond re-sponse and sub-nanometerresolution.

These ultra-high-force linearactuators consist of PICATM

Power piezoelectric ceramic-stacks encapsulated in a stain-less steel case with stainlesssteel end pieces and a friction-less internal spring preload. The high load capacity and pre-load makes them ideal formachining applications andactive vibration cancellation.

Open- and Closed-Loop

Models for Optimum

Dynamics and Linearity

The standard models are idealfor open loop positioning ap-plications. In this mode theactuator displacement is rouglyproportional to the appliedvoltage.

Open-loop operation is idealfor applications where the fast-est response and the high-estbandwidth are essential. Here, commanding and read-ing thetarget position in absolute val-ues is either not important orcarried out by an external feed-back loop.

For highest positioning accura-cy and repeatability, select thefactory installed closed-loopoption with integrated ultra-high- resolution strain gaugeposition sensors and operatewith PI servo-control electron-ics. For more information, read

C-866 Controller for Ultrasonic MotorsHigh-Speed, Closed-Loop Controller / Driver for PILine® Ultrasonic Piezo Linear Motors

The C-866 motion controllerwas specially designed forclosed-loop positioning sys-tems with PILine® ultrasonicpiezo linear drives. This com-pact unit contains not onlyservo-control and communica-tions circuitry, but also thedrive electronics.

Spezialized Servo Algorithms

for Ultrasonic Motors

The C-866 uses a highly spe-cialized DSP (Digital Signal Processor) to handle the PID servo-control algorithm aswell as other system functions.Because of the motion proper-ties typical for ultrasonicpiezomotors, the contoller hasa number of special features, including dynamic controlparameter adaptation. Thehigh-bandwidth encoder inputwith a limit frequency of 35 MHz supports the highvelocities of ultrasonic piezo-motor stages, even at high res-olution.

Integrated Drivers for

Piezomotors

To reduce the number of com-ponents in the PILine® posi-

tioning system, the piezomo-tor drive electronics has beenintegrated in the controller.Various versions of the con-troller are available, depend-ing on the piezomotor used.

The C-866.161 version, forexample, contains the driveelectronics for the P-661 motor(page 10-14 f) , which is usedin the M-663 (page 10-16 f)micro linear stage.

To assure the best possiblesystem performance in termsof force, velocity up to several100 mm/s and settling times ofa few tens of milliseconds, theintegrated drive electronics isfine-tuned to the connectedactuator / stage at the factory.

Software / Programming

In addition to the user soft-ware for setup, system opti-mization and operation, com-prehensive LabViewTM and DLLlibraries are provided.

Communication with the C-866is provided either through theRS-232 or the USB interface. For manual control, the unitcan be operated with a joystickon the host PC.

The PIMikroMove® user soft-ware provides the PITuning-Tool for system performanceoptimization. Graphic displaysshow the system’s behaviourand facilitate parameter set-ting.

Optionally, the C-843.ATSAuto-Tuning software is avail-able; it determines the idealsettings automatically.

PI General Command Set

(GCS)

The comprehensive commandstructure is based on the PIGeneral Command Set (GCS).With GCS the development of

custom application programsis simplified, because the com-mands for all supporteddevices are identical in syntaxand function. PI controllers fornanopositioning systems, forpiezomotors and servo or step-per motors can be command-ed with GCS.

Advantages of PILine®

Micropositioning Systems

The ultrasonic piezoceramicdrives used in PILine® micro-positioners have a number ofadvantages over classicaldrives:

 Higher Accelerations, up to10 g

Speeds up to 500 mm/s Small Form Factor Self-Locking When Powered

E-861 Controller/Driver for NEXACT® SystemsNetworkable Controller for NEXACT® Ceramic Linear Drives and Positioners

The new, compact E-861 con-troller is designed to operateNEXACT® linear drives andclosed-loop positioning sys-tems using them, simply andprecisely. In perfect harmonywith the mechanics, the E-861supports both motion modesof the PiezoWalk® steppingdrive: for longer moves, thestepping mode, and for movesshorter than typically 7 µm, the analog mode, which pro-vides high-dynamics position-ing with resolutions of lessthan 1 nm. The NEXACT® drivedesign minimizes piezo operat-ing voltages to 45 V and below.

Flexible Automation

E-861 controllers offer a num-ber of features to supportautomation and handling. Forexample, macros can be storedin non-volatile memory.

A programmable autostartmacro allows stand-aloneoperation without externalcommunication. Upon power-up, the macro with its internalcommand sequence is execut-ed automatically.

For easy synchronization ofmotion with internal or exter-nal trigger signals, four inputand four output lines are pro-vided.

Multi-Axis Operation

Up to 16 E-861 controllers canbe networked and controlledover a single PC interface.

Such daisy chain networks areflexible, can be extended atany time and are compatiblewith other PI controllers (e.g.DC servo-motor and steppermotor controllers).

Easy System Setup,

Comprehensive Software

All parameters can be set and checked by software.System setup and configura-tion is done with the includedPIMikroMove® user-interfacesoftware. Interfacing to customsoftware is facilitated withincluded LabView drivers andDLLs. With the PI GeneralCommand Set (GCS), systemprogramming is the same withall PI controllers, so controllinga system with a variety of dif-ferent controllers is possiblewithout difficulty.

unlimited travel range andstill provide the characteristicfeatures of a piezoelectricactuator: an open-loop resolu-tion down to 30 picometers anda very high stiffness for dynam-ic operation and force genera-tion. PI offers two product lines

PiezoWalk® drives are availa-ble for non-magnetic appli-cations such as super-con-ductivity experiments. Theydo not create magneticfields nor are they influen-ced by them.

The active parts inPiezoWalk® drives are madeof vacuum-compatible cera-mics. The drives also workin UV-light environments.

NEXLINE® drives can surviveshock loads of several gduring transportation.

PiezoWalk® drives are available in three levels of integration to provide flexibility for OEMs: OEMdrives, packaged actuatorsand integrated into complex positioningsystems such as multi-axistranslation stages or 6-DOFHexapods.

based on different versions of the PiezoWalk® principle: NEXLINE® and NEXACT®. Bothprovide specific advantagesdepending on the application.

PiezoWalk® piezo steppingdrives usually consist of sever-al individual piezo actuatorsand generate motion throughsuccession of coordinatedclamp / unclamp and shear-motion cycles (steps). Eachcycle provides only a fewmicrons of movement, but run-ning at hundreds of hertz, thedrive achieves continuousmotion in the mm/secondrange.

The PiezoWalk® working princi-ple provides high force capabil-ities, resolution and repeatabil-

ity. These properties are typi-cally better for piezo steppingactuators compared to inertiadrives or ultrasonic motors. The operation is possible intwo different modes: a high-resolution, high dynamics ana-log mode within a single step, and a step mode with virtuallyunlimited travel range.

50 picometer steps with a NEXLINE®

drive, measured with external ultra-high-resolution capacitive sensor. This performance provides a big safetymargin for next generation nano-technology applications

Features and Advantages of

PiezoWalk® Drives

Very high resolution, limitedtypically only by the sensor. In fine-adjustment, analogmode, resolution of 30 pico-meters has been demonstra-ted.

 High force generation andstiffness. NEXLINE® drivescan hold and generate for-ces to 600 N, NEXACT® to15 N.

PiezoWalk® drives hold astable position to nanome-ter level in power-off mode.Due to the actuator design, the maximum clampingforce is applied at rest.

Because a position can beheld with zero operating vol-tage, leakage currents can-not affect the integrity of thepiezo drive.

NEXLINE® High-Force Drives

for Nanopositioning

NEXLINE® systems are basedon very rugged, high-efficiencyshear and clamping actuatorsand incorporate a preloadingmechanism to provide pushingand holding forces up to 600 Nwith high lifetime. The rigiddesign with resonant frequen-cies of hundreds of hertz allowsthe construction of very stiffstructures and helps to sup-press vibration. The analogoperating mode can be usedfor dithering and active vibra-tion cancellation.

Compact NEXACT® Drives for

Moderate Forces

NEXACT® drives use bendingactuators which combine thefeed forward and the clampingcycles. They provide push/pullforces to 15 N with maximumvelocities of more than 10 mm/s at low operating volt-ages of 40 V. The compact andcost-effective NEXACT® drivesare available with various driveelectronics, ranging from cost-effective OEM drives for open-loop operation in steppingmode to the sophisticated E-861 servo-controller for high-resolution, closed-loop lineartranslation stages.

PILine® linear piezomotors arebased on a novel, patentedultrasonic drive developed byPI. At the heart of the system isa rectangular monolithic piezo-ceramic plate (the stator), seg-mented on one side by twoelectrodes. Depending on thedesired direction of motion, theleft or right electrode of thepiezoceramic plate is excited toproduce high-frequency eigen-mode oscillations at tens tohundreds of kilohertz. An alu-mina friction tip (pusher)attached to the plate movesalong an inclined linear path atthe eigenmode frequency.Through its contact with thefriction bar, it provides micro-impulses that drive the movingpart of the mechanics (slider, turntable, etc.) forward or back-wards. With each oscillatorycycle, the mechanics executesa step of a few nanometers; themacroscopic result is smoothmotion with a virtually unlimit-ed travel range. The drivingforce is taken from the energyin the longitudinal oscillationcomponent. The transversecomponent serves to increase /decrease the pressure of thefriction tip against the frictionbar. The transverse oscillationenergy determines the maxi-mum frictional force and hencethe holding and driving force ofthe motor. State-of-the-artultrasonic motors can produce

PILine® Ultrasonic Piezomotors – Working Principle

accelerations to 10 g and veloc-ities to 500 mm/s. Ultrasonic motors cannot pro-vide the unlimited resolution oflinear piezo actuators and flex-ure-guided piezo positioningstages. These motors transfermotion through friction, whichis why their repeatability is lim-ited to about 50 nm. Muchhigher resolution and holdingforces can be achieved withPiezoWalk® piezomotors / dri-ves.

PILine® Levels of Integration

PILine® ultrasonic drive prod-ucts are offered in three differ-ent levels of integration. Thedrive electronics and controllercan be chosen accordingly. P-661 and P-664 OEM motors

require the greatest amountof care at the customer’s site.Motor and friction bar – thelength depends on the travelrange – have to be integratedinto a mechanical setup.Operation requires preloadof the motor against the fric-tion bar, guiding and, ifnecessary, the servo-loop.

M-674 RodDrives can replaceclassical drive elements likerotary motor / leadscrewassemblies, or magneticlinear drives integrated intoa micropositioner or hand-ling device. Integrationrequires guiding and – ifnecessary – the servo-loop.

Linear positioning stagesrepresent the highest level ofmanufacturer integration. The piezomotor is integratedcompletely in a high-qualitymechanical setup inlcudingif necessary the servo-loopwith direct-metrology linearencoders.

State-of-the PILine® ultrasonic motors are based on a simple construc-tion allowing for the design of low-cost drive units and extremely com-pact, high-speed micro-positioning stages smaller than a matchbox.

Features and Advantages

of PILine® Ultrasonic

Piezomotors

 Compact Size: the direct-drive principle allows the de-sign of ultra-compact trans-lation stages. The M-662, forexample, provides 20 mmtravel in a 28 x 28 x 8 mmpackage.

Low inertia, high accelera-tion, speed and resolution:PILine® drives achieve veloci-ties to 500 mm/s and accele-rations to 10 g. They are alsovery stiff, a prerequisite fortheir fast step-and-settletimes – on the order of a fewmilliseconds – and provideresolution to 0.05 µm. Thelack of a leadscrew means

no lubricant flow or materialrelaxation to cause submi-cron creep. There is also norotational inertia to limitacceleration and decelera-tion.

Excellent Power-to-WeightRatio: PILine® drives are opti-mized for high performancein a minimum package. Nocomparable drive can offerthe same combination ofacceleration, speed and pre-cision.

Safe: The minimum inertia ofthe moving platform toget-her with the “slip clutch”effect of the friction driveprovide better protection ofprecision fixtures / devicesthan leadscrew-driven sta-ges. Despite the high speedsand accelerations, there is amuch lower risk of pinchingfingers or other injuries thanwith conventional drives. This means users may notneed interlocks, light cur-tains or other measures tokeep them safe.

 Self-Locking Feature: PILine®

drives create a braking forcewhen not energized withoutthe position shift commonwith conventional mechani-cal brakes. Other benefits ofthe self-locking are the elimi-nation of servo dither and

steady-state heat dissipa-tion.

Vacuum Compatibility: Vacu-um compatible versions ofPILine® drives are available.

Negligible EMI: PILine® dri-ves do not create magneticfields nor are they influencedby them, a decisive advanta-ge in many applications.

Custom Solutions / Flexibili-ty for OEMs: PILine® drivesare available in open-loopand closed-loop translationstages and as OEM compo-nents. PI develops and ma-nufactures all piezo ceramiccomponents in-house. Thisgives us the flexibility to pro-vide custom motors (size, force, environmental condi-tions) for OEM and researchapplications.

Quality, Lifetime, Experien-ce: Based on PI’s 30+ years ofexperience with piezo nano-positioning technology,PILine® drives offer exceptio-nal precision and reliabilitywith an MTBF of >20,000hours. Rotating componentssuch as gears, shafts andmoving cables that are proneto failure in conventionalmotion systems, are not partof the PILine® design.
